These are ideological not legal arguments. Japan and Germany were their own countries and didn’t exist in legal limbo-land. Gaza is effectively an errant rebellious province of Israel which is blockaded by land and sea. Of course Israel has to provide electricity and water.
@mark16pg
I just came from a polite and well run service, where the Welcome to Country was acknowledged, the New Zealand national anthem was sung in both NZ’s official languages, and first verse of I Am Australian was begun in an indigenous language. It isn’t hard to be respectful.

NATO is impelled in three directions. Turkish, American and European needs are all quite different, and Russia should know this. Yet Russia crossed the international border into Ukraine, making it very easy to identify the common enemy.
@AmourskyCyrille
@ivanastradner
Like Russia, Serbia is run by its secret police and mafias. Which is why we need to give Ukraine a chance to turn away from that model.
@quantian1
The difference is probably focus. The kids who become prodigies actually want to do it. Regular kids might be able to, as you suggest, but would have to be “made” to do it by zealous parents. Not cool, and the prodigious result hardly guaranteed.
@faniaoz
Actually ‘we’ don’t. Those of us that have studied history know there’s no limit to man’s barbarity to man.
We all knew in 2021 that there were many people in Gaza who would do bad things to Israel.
And we knew ISIS was bad and the genocide of the Yazidis was heartbreaking.

Indeed this is worth recalling. Never forget MacArthur, Curtis LeMay types (our own “Nazis”) would have happily dropped nuclear weapons and had to be overruled.

I doubt they’ll get sufficient funding for another year. Obviously the upcoming spring counteroffensive is their best chance of retaking what was lost. What cannot be retaken will probably be the unofficial border for many years.
@SallyLawry
Anti-vaxxers are freeloaders and should be regularly reminded of that. Many of us vaxxers didn't particularly want to be vaccinated either, however, we were interested in the survival of civilization. We've taken it, so they don't have to. Freeloaders.
"He’s a thug, and a crook, and a liar, and a pseudo-intellectual and a murderer. All those things are factually verifiable. That he’s an anti-communist is a speculation that he likes to encourage.”

Actually, Taiwan has an indigenous culture that predates Chinese settlement, if you want to talk historical facts, and you only have to talk to Israel to learn how important those facts are.

What's the use of NATO if a country like Ukraine can't join? It's Russia that can never join, as it will tie NATO into all Russia's problems with the rest of Central Asia.

These are Falangists. Maronite “Christians” but as mad as ultra-conservative settler Israelis. What’s the bet a few of them had relatives involved in the Sabra and Shatilla massacre 1982.
@iamraisini
It would appear he's protecting their interests. I suspect the links between the 9/11 perpetrators and the palace are more than we know. If America ever figures it out, it could be very dangerous for Saudis. Therefore they have an interest in keeping the GOP chasing QAnon etc.

Hmm. I’m thinking it’s part of the ivory tower complex too. As in ‘bad things happen in the world but we don’t need to know about it here’.
@kamilkazani
Yes, many economics journal articles are like this. The format where the first half is a dazzling display of econometrics to establish notational machismo, followed by a neo-liberal/conservative commentary that is only tenuously “proved” by the calculations, is also common.

Mr Chris, hello from Australia, I think you need to propose Tom Odell’s “Another Love” as the next Bond movie theme. Give it the Egan touch 😉
Smotrich & Ben Gvir represent the fringe of Israeli society. They are both extremists.
Anyone trying to present their comments as the view of most Israelis or even as the policy of the wartime cabinet either has a hidden agenda or does not get Israeli society/politics.

If it doesn’t happen on the campuses, it doesn’t much happen anywhere else. When we look back at Vietnam protests, it turned out the protesters were right. They might rightly say now ‘could we have done more’.

He’s right, the Russian-supporting residents of Luhansk and Donetsk should pack up and leave for Russia, like the Nagorno-Karabakh crowd. I don’t see the hypocrisy there.

University of Oxford accepted an enormous amount of money from Leonard Blavatnik to start a school training public servants. The late Queen knighted him for his charity. Find out a bit more about him and his links to Putin and I believe you will have your answer.

Grandad had a small transport company and coal mine in Central Otago. He wanted to take the occasional load of coal to his in-laws in Invercargill,two hours away, in his own trucks, but was banned because it competed against Railways.
