Due to conservation efforts, Botswana has the biggest population of elephants in the world. Why is that complicated? Elephants are dangerous, they can’t safely live side by side with humans.

They can be boisterous and while travelling across the country in search of water and space, they destroy property, national infrastructure and even our natural fauna and flaura when their population gets too dense. This is challenging for the rest of our natural environment.

Just this weekend I travelled up north towards Kasane for Easter and saw about 150 elephants on sides of the road on the way - they had learnt how to break the concrete sections of the national pipeline to get to the water, and had gone along it for kilometers

Elephants are also very intelligent and sentient beings. Culling can be very traumatizing to the elephant population and as a result cause them to react very violently, especially towards humans and vehicles which they learn to associate with killing.

Btw, our conservation efforts were very successful because our wildlife (elephants, rhinos etc) is protected by the military & poachers face very severe consequences here. At some stage, even rhino’s from South Africa were airlifted to Botswana for protection.

This poses a great danger to humans that may cross their paths in future. Aggressive elephants are very dangerous and hard to control. Therefore the best way to cull elephants is to kill them in entire herds.

@meggellithorne @mohale_motaung I’m sorry but sending African elephants from hot Botswana to cold Germany is not the right solution. There aren’t very many case studies about elephant culling, but one such example is the Pilanesburg elephants in South Africa. This is a very summarized breakdown, but essentially male elephants from culled herds were placed in the park in the hopes that they would populate…

Elephants are also very valuable on the black market and legalizing hunting/culling could make the entire population extremely vulnerable. As someone who loves animals, it’s hard to consider culling as an option at all. But I can understand why it is a part of the conversation.
