Urdu lesson of the day:
The Urdu word for trans people is -
Khwaja sira (خواجہ سرا)
Trans people are rarely even mentioned in political discussions and when they are, they aren't referred to with a lot of respect. So make sure that the language you use, isnt disparaging.
TW// Domestic Violence
.
.
You may not care about Amber Heard and Johnny Depp
So let me speak in an Indian context, domestic violence is rampant in our country and an overwhelming number of survivors are forced into silence.
And now we have our youth learning how to react-
I love how Indians will see trans women begging for money on the streets, harassed by police, forced to do sex work to survive, thrown out of their homes, turned away from jobs, housing etc.
And their main concern is our participation in sports competitions😍
Dear LGBT's?
I am trying to understand. Can a 'man' at any point of time identify himself as a 'woman' and participate in sports competition for 'women'. Is that acceptable?
Don't scream if you don't have answers. But just try. Let's have a civil debate.
You can be passionately against the institution of marriage
But you have to be pretty stupid to think that the opposition to gay marriage in India is anything other than homophobic hatred.
As a trans woman who is also an Indian Muslim, I have to deal with unique challenges like sitting next to Hindutvadi trans women who spew the most bigoted nonsense to my fucking face.
Calls for a free Kashmir are also for the trans women, and other queer people in Kashmir, whose lives are impacted by Indian occupation
But of course, you don't actually care. It's very evident that you only care about savarna queers
-when survivors speak up.
A entire generation is being taught how to react when women come forward to talk about the violence they have faced, when women defend themselves and when they speak up for themselves.
We cannot understate the impact this trial has.
As a trans woman, I have had to accept the fact that my family will resort to violence when they find out about my identity and I've had to make preparations accordingly to run away from home.
But why SHOULD I have to accept that? Do I not deserve to live like my brothers do?
I feel like people who push other people into marriage or try to sell them on the idea of marriage, do so because they want to validate their feelings about their own marriage.
Like the more people that do it, the less you'll doubt your own decision to get/stay married
Without including any trans person, Indian Armed Forces has formed a study group to find out if it can employ trans persons. Indian Defence Ministry is world's largest employer with close to 30 lakh employees. It violates law by not employing LGBTQIA+ Indians.
As a Muslim in this country, i recognise the need to find flatmates who share similar political views
Because god forbid if you ever end up with a sanghi or EVEN a soft-sanghi as a flatmate, the dangers that poses cannot be understated
Even with all the resources at Amber Heard's disposal, she is still vilified, berated, threatened and mocked, think about how much worse it must be for women who don't have those resources.
Noor Jehan had defied Ayub Khan(Former President of Pakistan) to sing 'Mujhse Pehli si Mohabbat' at a charity event organised by the government.
Faiz Ahmed Faiz heard her singing through the radio, in his jail cell and said: this isn't my poem anymore, it belongs to Noor Jehan.
If you claim to be a principled leftist of any sort, then you have to do the work of de-radicalizing your sanghi family members, work that goes beyond sending them a dhruv rathee video.
You absolutely must have those difficult and uncomfortable conversations.
My nephew called me chachi again.
My dad corrected him like
"Chachi nai, chacha hai unu"
CHUP KAR NA LAVDE,
WOH CHOTA BACCHA TERE SE ZYADA SAMAJHDAR HAI
This is beyond just a news story that comes and goes, it has shown survivors what could happen to them if they speak up
And it has shown abusers how to get away with what they have done.
Embrace revolutionary feminist ideals and watch how it makes the men in your life uncomfortable.
Even the most progressive seeming men will start antagonising you.
Pretty privilege is not an aspirational goal, it's dehumanising.
It stems from the way men have been reducing women to their appearance and pitting them against each other for millenia.
To the "No that's just a misinterpretation, Islam is not anti-lgbtq" people,
I'd just like to remind you that it doesn't matter how you and your 2 friends in Canada interpret a homophobic verse/hadith, the majority of the Muslim world has already agreed upon an interpretation
Over 150 prominent Muslim scholars across North America have jointly written a statement of monumental importance entitled: “Navigating Differences: Clarifying Sexual and Gender Identity in Islam."
Read full statement at:
My friend wears a burqa and is afraid of being seen smoking in it. She says that when people see a burqa wearing woman smoking, they start questioning her faith and her "haya"
But I think she looks cool af so i took a picture of her and made an edit
If someone wants to drink, do drugs, have sex, get tattoos, wear "revealing" clothes, be queer and still call themselves Muslim, thats their choice and its between them and Allah.
You need to learn to mind your business, faith is personal.
One of the weirdest things to happen in this app is someone will be complaining about their parents and OTHER people will get offended like bhai???
Tumaare amma baawa acche hai toh hum kya karna baigan
Growing up admiring your mother, revering her, loving her more than anyone else, only for her to turn on you...
Its a kind of betrayal that nothing in this world could prepare you for. You learn to find comfort in your mother's arms but now you find nothing but coldness
I have put in my notice at my call center job.
And I would just like to make a request to everyone who sees this tweet,
If you ever have to call customer service, please be nice, no matter how big or small your issue is. Please be kind. And fucking rate them 5 stars everytime.
When trans women from a Muslim background try to talk about the rampant and unapologetic transphobic hatred among Muslims,
we are silenced and barely any progressive wants to side with us because they're so afraid of coming off as Islamophobic but my sisters are DYING
People seem to view the problems in this country as being separate from what the country stands for, what it's values are.
But let me assure you, the violence against Dalits, violence against Kashmiris, Muslims, minorities all of this is what India is built on. This IS India.
This is so immensely horrifying to me as someone who is a trans person from a Muslim background in this country
AND as someone who will be needing help from NGOs and government services for trans people in the near future
🧵Meet Giti Thadani, an extremely islamophobic person, appointed on the National Council for Transgender Persons by
@MSJEGOI
as an expert to represent NGOs working for trans people. It is unclear which NGO Giti represents. ⚠️ TW: Islamophobia, Calls for Genocide
A lot of Indian politics still upholds the belief that the misogyny displayed by a man from a marginalized community is just too insignificant or that he's not capable of misogyny at all.
I'm coining the term "Hum Dekhenge Activists"
Hum Dekhenge Activist:
Someone, usually non-muslim and/or UC, who will fetishize protests(eg-Shaheen Bagh), fetishize and tokenize Muslims and platform any and all Muslims regardless of how bigoted they are.
The people celebrating this day aside, what about our friends who remain close to those people?
Our friends who still keep them in their circles and overlook their beliefs? See it's not just active participation that I fear, it's the complicity, the silence
I have absolutely no respect for marriage.
If you're married/want to get married, good for you i guess? Idgaf.
but if i were you, I would spend some time questioning why you feel the need to get married, what marriage is really about and its history.
Not a single sehri or iftar has passed without the family talking about islamophobic violence and hatred in this country.
These things aren't just clips on twitter for us. I wish our non-Muslim peers saw these things the way we did.
It's really hard for me to digest the fact that countless parents are completely alright with disowning and kicking their queer children out,
leaving them all alone at the mercy of a cruel and unforgiving world that doesn't accept them either. I can't process that.
I just wanna take this opportunity to say that if you guys are besties with sanghis or dating sanghis, please block me immediately and stay far far away.
I dont wanna know about how you two were discussing the lives of my people and then started sucking and fucking on each other
Having to make plans to run away from home because my family is hellbent on getting me married. And it really made think about how many people like me have had their lives upended because of this and have not had a chance or the privilege to run away.
There are countless young women coming from "educated" urban families who get married off at ages as young as 17.
Their parents don't send them to elite schools so they can grow up and do something with their education, they do it so that they're more marketable to the groom.
My mom stole my dad's cigarettes and is currently smoking them before breakfast. This is someone who's never smoked...
Absolute unhinged behaviour is hereditary 😐
Can we please stigmatise the use of the acronym "MILF"
It is fucking disgusting to see anyone use that word but its especially gross when men use it.
Like it literally makes me nauseous
It is not the most feminist move to say "auction me too" when Muslim women in this country are being mercilessly hounded and harassed by right wing goons.
This is why liberal politics is never gonna help us achieve women's liberation.
It is so disturbing to see everyone take the time to appreciate how impactful and great JK Rowling's work is 😐
I don't care even if it IS good, you are not gonna catch me appreciating a transphobe like that
Pride month is a good time to talk about the increasing number of young people being disowned, kicked out, abused etc. for their queer identity and how there are very few resources to help them.
Th state doesn't provide any and law enforcement isnt very reliable either.
I was sitting at a clinic for trans people waiting for a session with my counselor and this trans woman sits next to me, asks me my name and when she hears my name she starts going on the most unashamed Islamophobic tirade.
Diverse sanghis so fun 😍
The surrogacy trade is akin to trafficking and prostitution.
Its still the commodification of a woman's body to be bought and sold
The reason why many don't view it that way is because childbirth is seen as a woman "fulfilling her role" or "doing what she's made for"
Hi I'm sorry if any of you are blocked by me in the coming days,
I'm blocking if I see you being mutuals with transphobes or extremists, I'm not gonna bother informing you because idgaf ❤️
I get very little freedom outside this app, im not gonna let you ruin it for me
❤️❤️❤️
The restriction of hijabs in schools is nothing new by the way
My own school wouldn't allow Muslim students to wear the hijab, but of course,
bindis were allowed,
tilaks were allowed,
red coloured threads on the wrists were allowed,
turbans were allowed.
"Neither Israel nor Palestine, just peaceful coexistence🤗",
is such a disgusting take.
You should be ashamed of yourself if you ever spout that nonsense
