Last night I stayed at a fancy Brisbane hotel. No biscuits with their in room coffee and tea supplies. Tonight I’m in a budget hotel in Longreach. 3 packets of biscuits. Never change country people. Never change...
AFR reports that Kuwait has warned the Albanese government that its proposed ban on live sheep exports is effectively futile because the emirate will not buy any more chilled meat from Australia and will simply source livestock from other countries instead.
Terrible news about our mate and regular

@ColinJBettles
. Fingers crossed he pulls through unscathed after this ordeal. Kind thoughts and well wishes to Colin, his partner, family and friends. Quick recovery brother.
I just want to take this opportunity to congratulate
@AdamCoffeyNT
for his win as he was a very deserving candidate. At this time of deep loss for me I reflect on the wise words of my favourite philosopher The Sasquatch.

- consistently one of the best operators in that place, hands down. Honest, well spoken, intelligent, honourable - too bad more politicians weren't cut from the same cloth...
ABARES updated broadacre farm profit showing the pain being felt in the WA sheep sector presently.. overlaying the lowest 5% region for profit with the sheep rearing area is almost an identical match.
Overlay fires and livestock numbers potentially impacted Area represents about 8.6 million head of sheep (12% of flock) and 2.3 million head of cattle (9% of herd) Not all livestock in areas will be impacted but gives an idea of total numbers in these zones.
@MecardoAnalysis
Follow the money! Do exporters benefit if live export stock are treated poorly? NO, they lose money, due to poor stock condition, higher mortality rates and risk of loss of social licence. Do workers on ships being paid for footage benefit if animals are treated poorly? YES...
The rate for shipping a 40 foot container from China to US dropped by $9,000 between September and October, from a high of $17,500 to $8,500. Still well above the $1,500 it cost pre Covid, though.
@AnimalsAus
With Australia out of the trade this is what will be the accepted global standard. The irony of your ridiculous stance to ban live export in Australia will be that this is what your policy will achieve for animals globally.
We moved to a town near Ballarat about a decade ago, not knowing my grandfather was born in the exact same town. Going through a box of very old family pics and I see a pic of Ballarat’s victory arch and Sturt St as a dirt road. Pretty cool.
Always amazes me at this meteor site in Arizona, USA that the impact of the meteor caused such a huge crater but didn’t damage the visitor centre right nearby.
The Aust India FTA comes into force this year which sees tariffs gone for more than 85% of Australian exports to India. This includes key exports such as wool, lamb, barley, oats & fresh rock lobsters.
The long term discount between WA trade lamb and East coast trade lamb is about 9%. Currently it’s more than 30% and the share of live export turnoff has reduced from 30% to nearly 10%.
@AnimalsAus
would have you believe that live export doesn’t underpin WA prices - seems legit.
The numbers are an error. They took it from
@MecardoAnalysis
but didnt look closely. Our numbers are the total population in fire impacted areas not the losses
#FactCheck
The government has warned produce prices could increase dramatically after the loss of 8.6 million sheep and 2.3 million cattle to bushfires.

In a letter to Agriculture Minister Murray Watt, Kuwait’s Commerce and Industry Minister, Mohammad Othman Al Aiban, said the ban threatened to damage broader trade and economic ties between Australia and the region.
For this not on LinkedIn or missed the update

@Chickolsson
for the update.
It’s great to see vegan or vegetarian options at most regular restaurants these days. I do wonder though if you can get a carnivore or omnivorous option at vegan or vegetarian establishments.

“Home to 21% of the world’s population, China possesses only 7% of productive farmland. Although China exported $76 billion in ag commodities in 2020, it vacuumed up $170 billion in ag imports—No. 1 importer of food on the planet.” Good piece from Agweb

The anti live export lobby are a bit sensitive today after pointing out that the WA cyclone is over 2,200 I’m away from Fremantle and probably unlikely to trouble the Maysora currently loading for a trip.

@OurWorldInData
A simplistic assumption. I’d expect better from
@OurWorldInData
. Most feed livestock consume is not food that humans can digest and much of this is grown on land unsuitable for cropping. It’s not an either or argument. We can crop and raise livestock.

Great chart posted on LinkedIn by Ophir Asset Management showing how bad the market was at predicting the future US interest rate moves over time. Yellow market predictions at points in time vs the actual movement.
@Countryman1885
The sheep that go live export are a different spec to those processed domestically and sent in a box to countries like the UK. This is a pointless excercise.
