For the CEOs out there who have to predict what will happen to the economy (so they can make the best decisions for their company), I wrote this. Its pretty radical and will likely make me very unpopular. I hope it helps:
I am open to coaching 3 more CEOs.
I will become your manager.
If you become more effective, then you know the process works.
Then we roll it out to your company, as Sam did at OpenAI.
🔹 Series B+. $50M+ cash, or profitable
🔹 Post-PMF and scaling. Team of >50

comparing notes. My take-away: each company faces pretty much the same day-to-day challenges. The answer: compare notes regularly with other CEOs. Its therapeutic.
I am looking for a Head of the Office of the CEO (formerly called Chief of Staff). If you are super-organized (Notion / GSuite pro), a great communicator & super-eager, AND willing to relocate to work with me in-person in Kauai, please apply.

On the surface, these moves seem illogical. The people are often giving up big comp. Here is what I think is going on and how to solve the issue. (2/2)
When you discover a large potential market and raise significant capital early, investors will pressure you to hire a big team to win the “race to market share”. Resist this pressure. It is misplaced. Stay at 6 team members or less until you have Product-Market Fit.
So you're a CEO, and you need to fundraise. Where do you start?
Well, IMHO ...

If you are running a company and feeling overwhelmed because the problems you are facing are difficult and unique to your company, go talk to one other CEO. You are NOT alone!
Train your reports to say, "I intend to" instead of asking for permission.
That simple change of language will make your reports begin to feel and act like owners. Why? Because:
-They declare their intention and own their action.
-It eliminates the CEO as the bottleneck.

Justin and I got together last week to talk about some very vulnerable moments as a CEO. Here's one of the clips (link to full video below):
Once your team grows large enough to not be able to sit next to each other in one room (ie- more than ten, or remote workers), then suddenly information-sharing by osmosis disappears. Now you will need a formal management system to succeed. That requires significant overhead.
I recently did a Q&A via Zoom with a group of 20 CEOs for The Great CEO Within and it was a lot of fun. I am excited to do more of these.
Here are my asks to do so:

There are many ways to create a company, but only one good one. And that is to deeply understand a real customer and her problem, then solve her problem. Any idea that you come up with on your own is not a good business.
When someone is part of a team of 6 or less, the environment feels like a Fire Team (up to 4 soldiers) in war. Chaos is expected. When it is encountered, the team meets it with glee. People who join small teams crave the challenge of new things. They want things to be hard.

I care deeply about 2 things (outside of my family): 1. coaching great tech organizations 2. ending poverty in the US. The first because its so much fun. The second, because I think it's actually doable:
The data shows that solo founders rarely succeed. The emotional burden is just too high. So, find a co-founder. Give up 50% of the company. It’s worth it.
Chief of Staff is a great role, but a terrible title. It implies that the person is a full member of the C-Suite. They are not.
What do you think is best?
Or is there another title that is better than all of these?
A friendly reminder: I’m teaching another free + public class on Friday, Nov 12 at 9am PT. It is open to all.
This time, I’ll be live coaching one of my favorite topics for CEOs: the Energy Audit.

Why is it important to stay small? Until Product-Market Fit is achieved, the company must be able to adapt to negative customer feedback and potentially pivot the company. No matter what you say, when joins a 10-plus-person company, they expect that Product-Market Fit exists.
