It’s not the ‘positional game’ per se, it’s Tuchel’s interpretation of positional football and his failure to get the best out of the talents of his squad. Some of the most beautiful and creative teams in history have played under positional principles.

True Leeds fans are very proud of him. We grew up watching him struggle for years as an attacking mid in the championship against Ipswich and Barnsley… can’t fault him wanting to make the most of his career. He is Leeds.
It was a great pleasure to chat to Professor Michael Lamb tonight (

Matt Andersen (

How did Christianity influence Herbert Butterfield's criticism of political realism? Matt Andersen explores how Butterfield combined ethics with a realist sensibility in the early years of International Relations and its emerging theory of realism.

Isn’t the purpose of academia to ‘understand’ and ‘explain’ the world not this petty inter disciplinary tribalist proclamation of being ‘right’ ?
It was an a pleasure to speak today to
@UpsPolitics
in Budapest on the Cold War, the history of liberalism and of course the wisdom of Reinhold Niebuhr and Sir Herbert Butterfield. Challenging and thought provoking questions !
Matt gave a great talk and answered our questions and worries at the fellows' seminar of
@UpsPolitics
on the topic below.
His is a very fresh and complex approach, well researched, historically alert and depending on a wise political judgement.
It was great to be on the Niebuhr podcast again with the fantastic
@ClifBailey
and
@ANiebuhrHost
. Lots of politics and theology (from Barth to AI) covered in this brilliant chat. 🙌
🚨 NEW EPISODE 🚨

Absolutely fantastic. Great interview by my friends at
@LoveThyNiebuhr
. Anyone interested in Jewish-Christian dialogue in the mid Century must give this a listen. Such an important perspective on Niebuhr that we really need to start taking seriously.
🚨 NEW EPISODE 🚨
In this very special Valentine’s Day episode, we interview distinguished lawyer and columnist, Gordon Mehler, about his recent article on the bromance💕 between Niebuhr and Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel.

The key to defending against very technical ball playing side is to provide enough space for them to knock the ball around, but never enough to penetrate. Teams often make the mistake of going too tight and making the pitch small… Klopp, Terzic, Mourinho and Nuno taught us this
It was a pleasure to interview Michael Lamb (

Need some reading for the bank holiday weekend? Our very own
@mattandersen__
has been in conversation with
@KMLamb
about his new book, A Commonwealth of Hope: Augustine’s Political Hope. Read below! ⬇️
“Niebuhr, with his Augustinian emphasis on human sinfulness, would in some ways have fitted Moyn’s frame better than any of the book’s protagonists, although he didn’t always think of himself as a liberal”
Or was RN a self-conscious internal critic of the liberalism of fear?
@huspsa
@MazMHussain
The Premier League was simply a rebranding of the old English First Division which was set up in the late 1880s. Media moguls like us to believe English football was invented in 1992… to better market their product. So actually the reverse of Murtaza’s dictum applies.
Honoured to even be name checked in such company. Prof Gaston’s genealogical work on Reinhold Niebuhr is remarkable. Be sure to listen to her thoughts next weeks …
@stirling_j
It’s because most football punditry is focussed on the basic aesthetic (ie short passing, long ball, chasing the ball) and individual actions (great hit) … little awereness of underlying processes and structures…
Anyone and everyone welcome!
@lspohn002
did a great job of leading the discussion last week. We all gained a lot from it and had a great time. More of the same this week! 📚 🖊
Please join us for round two of our inaugural CIH Lunch Seminar Series! This week we're tackling the introduction to Hayden White's Metahistory (1973).
An honour to speak to these incredible young people for

Thanks! I feel it’s so important to re-canonise Niebuhr. I think the final 20 pages of the Children of Light and Children of Darkness, combined with his critique of George Kennan’s ‘American Diplomacy’ in The Irony provide us with an entirely new platform to reinterpret RN…
My latest piece in
@ProvMagazine
. Recovering Kennan’s historical and philosophical consciousness is essential for any meaningful interpretation of his thought. Containment doctrine was only one small part of the story.
“For Weber, too, nihilism lies in the gaps between knowledge, politics, and religion opened up in modernity, but it is more than the mere depletion of values through rationalization, secularization, and disenchantment.”
An exclusive group of theologians from east coast seminaries, including ya boi, met regularly from 1934-1961 to discuss the evolution of 20th century Christianity. They called themselves “The Theological Discussion Group.” Which is more descriptive than creative. No frills.
@bfcarlson
The key word here is ‘Jewish’ perspective. Niebuhr in the 1950s drew heavily from the work of Martin Buber and Abraham Heschel as an antidote to what he perceived as the ‘Hellenisation of Christianity’. His point was that we have to accept and embrace existential mystery.

I can’t believe this is real. Signed copy of ‘Structures.’ I need to get a soft case for it because I will be hugging it as I go to sleep for the foreseeable future.
The interpretative key to Niebuhr is not his engagement with the ‘timeless’ wisdom of the Old Testament prophets, Augustine or Edmund Burke… it is his reading of Heschel and his interlocutors. The ideas Heschel introduced to him constitutes the lens by which N reads the ‘canon’

In Moyn’s defence it was never a whole scale history of CW liberalism, the book came out of a series of six lectures he was invited to give at Oxford. He has plenty of interesting things to say about Niebuhr in my chats with him at least 🙂

🚨 NEW EPISODE 🚨
On this week’s episode, the hosts converse with Niebuhr scholar, Matt Andersen, about the term ‘Realist’ and whether Niebuhr even belongs in the category.
@mattandersen__
@DanielSleat
In the philosophical debates in Britain and America ‘community’ was something that minimalist early Cold War liberalism often ignored as the idea of collective emancipation was (wrongly) attributed with Communist thinking.
@Tippihh
@ODDSbible
Nothing pejorative. Bielsa built a south American / Spanish style possession team. Marsch is building a German / Austrian style transitional team. Very different principles, mentality, and technical qualities required. Both radical football ideologies very difficult to adapt to

There are many provocations and doors Sam opens which we can all fill, contribution to the ongoing conversation, which is really Moyn’s point, the reinvention of liberalism is requires more than simply rehashing mid-Century ideas

It’s not either / or. Niebuhr wrote in a variety of different registers for different audiences. He also changed his mind quite a lot and especially in the 1950s struggled to reconcile his neo Orthodoxy with neo-Hasidic Jewish thought
The riches of the world cannot buy what BVB have built. A football club not a commercial club. Every decision made by Watzke, Sammer, Zorc, Kehl are in the interest of FOOTBALL and stewardship of a community asset they know is always bigger than themselves.
