Only thing I have to say re:
#salmond
tonight are that in this country we try people in a court of law, with a jury of their peers. They are innocent until proven guilty, and if found innocent, then innocent they remain. We don’t try people by television.
Can anyone give a good or valid reason why there is a different headline for the “Scottish” version? I can’t I’m good faith see one. In which case, this is political bias. This is in breach of the BBC charter.
Can someone explain to me why Scotland’s constitutional future should be decided upon by MPs that are elected by people who do not live in Scotland? We have no say over those MPs, so we have no say over our future. That isn’t democracy.
With respect Mr Javid, the people of Scotland didn’t elect you. If you’re not accountable to us, you have no right to be telling people here they can’t have self determination. If you think this is Westminster’s purview by all means have all the Scottish MPs vote on it.
If I become PM, I won’t allow a second Scottish independence referendum. People stated views clearly in 2014, so there should be no second vote. Nicola Sturgeon should spend more time improving public services in Scotland, and less time grandstanding
We are told that Holyrood cannot hold a referendum on independence because that power is reserved to Westminster.
Today, the majority of Scottish MPs voted for the Scottish Parliament to be able to hold a vote. They were overruled by English MPs. This is not democracy.
For those screaming from the rooftops about the end of peak fares or other cuts Holyrood are being forced to make:
Nobody wants to make those cuts. Except Labour. Because they did. They’ve cut the ScotGov budget; they axed the winter fuel payment (and the Barnet consequential)
I was there on October 1st. I saw jackbooted military police thugs beating old women with clubs for daring to vote. I spoke to govt ministers who are now in jail, political prisoners in Europe.
How dare you? How *dare* you pollute Scotland with these lies?
9 years ago I voted
#yes
. Not because of flags or anthems or slogans on the side of a bus but because of a simple, powerful proposition:
Scotland should be ruled by a government OF the people of Scotland, FOR the people of Scotland, elected BY the people of Scotland.
#StillYes
Notice in the last few days attacks on all sides about this; Gove & Galloway then the Times now a BBC bit on why “Scots who live in England should be allowed to vote”. Clearly they’ve realized another referendum can’t be stopped, so now they’re trying to rig it. Keep going folks.
A wee thread
I am an English Scot. I am a Scottish nationalist. I am a politician & activist.
None of these things conflict with each other. I believe in Indy because I think it is what is best for Scotland.
Others do not share that position yet and that’s fine.
Huge news. The SNP is backing a constitutional convention - all of Scotland’s democratically elected representatives - if the majority of them agree a referendum on independence must happen, it cannot, MUST NOT be the case they are overruled by MPs in London that we don’t elect.
"It means backing a ‘Convention’ of all democratically elected representatives—in the Scottish Parliament, at Westminster, in our Councils—who support Scotland’s right to choose."
#SNP24
Ian Murray saying the winter fuel money would have meant he would have to take it from somewhere else, pensioners freeze but he can get £150m to undermine devolution bypassing Holyrood?? The only “change” is the colour of rosettes.
#VoteLabourGetTory
Our party has never before seen such electoral success. We are at record highs in the polls. The election that will see the SNP returned with a majority is 5 months away. All of this with our party leader. She will lead us to Indy. If we don’t stuff it up.
#istandwithFM
Noticed I’m getting more happy joyous unionists piling on the hate - just for pointing out that if we were independent we could have continued a furlough.
Apparently such a thing is an impossible insanity.
Just gonna leave this here...
I'm pleased to announce that I have been nominated by local members across the new Argyll, Bute and South Lochaber constituency to seek selection to be our candidate for the UK General Election.
#UKGE
@kartaginawin
@dsszzi
They have no info. Russia disconnected the data output and comms systems. IAEA said this in the morning. They won’t be able to provide any updates.
Just for the record, I fully support the SNPs long-standing policy of not accepting any seats in the House of Lords. It is an affront to democracy that it even exists.
I would vigorously oppose any change to said policy. As would, I believe most party members, cllrs, MSPs & MPs.
Had to wait until the regional selection process was concluded but delighted to announce I have been selected as
@theSNP
candidate for
@HelensburghSNP
and Lomond South by-election.
Rather embarrassingly, I’d downloaded the ONS stats to compare to GERS and tweeted about this earlier, but turns out I’d gotten the 2019 figures;
Happy to correct; GERS now claims 25% of the entire UK deficit is Scotland’s (population: 8.2%).
@KayBurley
@SoniaAdesara
@llggeorgia
Where did Ms
@llggeorgia
get her medical doctorate from?
If she’s not a medical expert then this isn’t balance - it’s science vs right wing populist.
Maybe you couldn’t find someone actually qualified to speak to put forward that argument?
Not to “call out” anyone but I’d remind some of our newer members who only joined the party post-2014 - especially those who are now junior MPs (ie ~5 years in office) that the SNP is strongest when we all stand together and don’t attack each other or our leader in public. 😉
@JaneyGodley
He’s not the messiah…
The fun thing about this one is you don’t even need to finish the quote, someone will finish it for you. In fact, when you read this, you completed it in your head, didn’t you? Bet you used the funny voice too.
That’s when you know a film is a legend.
Says the reason they’re reduced is that they’re “dented” when they’re not.
I’m guessing Asda’s pricing system doesn’t have a code for “Scottish people don’t tend to buy stuff covered in union flags”..
No right of reply here
@EdinburghLive_
?
I’m a prospective SNP candidate & National Convener of
@EnglishScot4YES
and can say there is no anti-English agenda in the SNP. I wouldn’t presume to speak for
@NicolaSturgeon
but I’m sure she would say the same!
Douglas Ross got absolutely demolished in
#fmqs
. Completely embarrassing for his party I’m sure, if there was a capacity for shame amongst their number.
This is beneath Janet. The SNP don’t hate the English. You know this. You’ve met me - I’m English Scots, and I’m running to be our candidate in
#Dumbarton
.
If only the Scottish government had gotten the power to renationalize our trains and power over Network Rail before the last tendering...
Oh wait. YOU blocked them. Your party have a pretty brass neck to complain about situations you’ve caused.
This is ridiculous and dangerous.
@ScotRail
@AlexHynes
@MathesonMichael
please ensure there are six carriages tomorrow on the main commuter train from Helensburgh through Dumbarton.
Juvenile. Stupid. Wrong.
As an English Scot, as an SNP Cllr, as a yes activist, and really just as a person living in Scotland; this just makes me cringe.
I’m voting
#SNPbecause
I want my child to grow up in a normal country, without food banks, where our poor and sick are cared for. A country where the government is elected by the people of Scotland.
#GE2019
I am not ashamed to admit a wee tear and a lump in my throat as I watched the magnificent
@Feorlean
last speech in Parliament there. I have no doubt
@jenni_minto
is going to be a worthy successor to him but I shall miss his wise voice in the next parliament.
Scotland will too.
@CSMFHT
@omer1698
Pretty much definitely. Also the eggs/hare stuff is believed linked to her/her counterparts in other Germanic tribes (since we only have Bede to vouch for Ēostre but Ostara/Ôstara are more known). No idea where the Ishtar thing comes from…
So that's both
@CllrSMcCabe
AND
@jamesmccolgan
RT'ing
@AnasSarwar
saying we should have brought in iPad's before now.
Both of them voted against my budget amendment way back in 2013 to do exactly that. I believe one of them said it was a "waste of money".
#brassneck
#talkischeap
In the last 3 weeks
@jackiebmsp
has suggested the Aberdeen lockdown was a conspiracy then welcomed one here, and is now saying she didn’t ask BBC to stop covering
#DailyBriefing
despite RTing Foulkes saying she did.
Dumbarton deserves better than this.
I’m seeing lots of talk about factions. Let me be clear - I’m in it for independence. I want my daughter to grow up in an independent Scotland. A fairer, healthier brighter place.
The ONLY route for that is with the SNP.
#InItForIndy
Let’s get that hashtag trending!
This thread is a brilliant example of PR done well vs PR done bad.
@JustEatUK
backs the English team and mocks scottish fans who complain. No apologies.
@Scoffable
(a scotland based rival) just made tons of new customers with this one tweet.
@mgshanks
Bombing innocent civilians and violating the Geneva convention isn’t a practical step towards peace. It’s a war crime, and by refusing to condemn it, your party and you are complicit in that.
You should feel ashamed. I pity you, Michael.
So lemme just get this straight.
@heraldscotland
often doesn’t carry stuff from
@EnglishScot4YES
because we’re “fringe”, wasn’t interested in my opinions when I was a Cllr because I lacked “authority”. But now they publish David Icke?!
#RIPHerald
Why I’m standing. - a thread.
Having previously served as Cllr in Greenock, I know how important a local voice is for a community.
In 2016 my partner and I moved to the constituency to raise our about-to-be-born daughter - who started nursery this week btw, how did that happen?!
Obviously I am disappointed to have lost but it’s heartening to see a 5.8% increase in
@theSNP
vote here. A similar swing in a few weeks will see
@ToniGiugliano
elected for Dumbarton.
Helensburgh and Lomond South (Argyll & Bute) first preferences:
CON: 50.7% (+11.7)
SNP: 23.6% (+5.8)
LDEM: 14.0% (-8.1)
LAB: 5.6% (-2.9)
GRN: 5.2% (+5.2)
WORK: 0.9% (+0.9)
Seat change:
Conservative GAIN from Liberal Democrat.
LDem elected under STV in 2017.
@BBCRadioScot
I don’t believe anyone has proposed raising taxes so we won’t be taxed more.
If the Scottish govt don’t implement similar cuts to those in England it just means the wealthy here won’t get a massive tax cut. I’m fine with that.
Announcement:
I can confirm I have put my nomination papers (well, it’s an email) to stand as an SNP candidate for Helensburgh & Lomond South.
If selected by members, I hope to build upon my increasing of the SNP vote in the by-election last year to win a seat in the ward in May
The SNP are not perfect. But we have done so much right in Scotland - and all of that is at risk, because a hostile, petty Tory-lite Labour govt in London, and worse yet, a Labour-Tory coalition in Holyrood, could undo everything.
Remember that if you benefit from snp policies.
See what I’m talking about?
This isn’t some coincidence. This is the Unionist Spin Machine in full back pedal. They know they can’t depend on just saying no to a new referendum so now the steady drip drip drip of “we’ll let you have your vote if you let us decide who votes”.
‘That decision impacts me as much as it impacts people living in Scotland. I passionately believe in Scotland being at the heart of the United Kingdom’
@jamesbundy
says living in London should not exclude him from having a vote in any future independence referendum.
#BBCSevenDays
@marcuscarslaw1
I politely disagree. I think it’s becuase we haven’t campaigned enough on independence. Indy is polling higher than the party. People who would vote yes are voting for other parties because they don’t think we’re serious about it.
@fincarson
Today isn’t Christmas. Also your tweet suggests there is something wrong with the govt recognising the celebration of solstice by our pagan community.
I’m sure you aren’t doing that as it would be contrary to the MSP code of conduct to engage in religious discrimination.
@RhRose71
@DrPStewart
Knowing some farmers, I’d imagine if you see a farmer in your A&E this time of year just go straight ahead and prep for theatre. Wheel them thru X-Ray on the way…

You stood shoulder to shoulder with the Tories who inflicted austerity agenda cuts on Scotland’s poorest communities - people in our constituency were counting on you, yet here you were, raising money to keep Scotland under tory rule..
You have no shame
@jackiebmsp
Labour halved child poverty in Scotland from 1999, but since 2007, under the SNP, child poverty has gone up. Feel free to encourage your government to do more, meanwhile I will fight for my community.
Thank goodness we didn’t go independent in 2014. We’d probably be back in the EU by now, with over 100% of our electricity needs met by renewables & windfall taxes on oil&gas producers to pay for a gas price cap. Sounds dreadful.
Luckily we stayed put. Yay

2020 can just get in the bin. DWP letter today after a single phone interview with someone with no medical qualifications stating my partner who has fibromyalgia and complex PTSD has no right to the PIP award she’s had for the last 6+ years.

If the UK Home office have not arrested the Scots that are being held inside their van, they are being illegally detained. If they're under arrest, they can only be held for 12 hours without being charged. I make it 4 hours so far.
@ScotBandBassoc
@scotgov
So you’ve had months to fill in a single form critical to the running of your business, proving the place is safe, and somehow this is the fault of the govt?
Maybe running a business (where peoples lives depend on your ability to do things like gas safety checks) isn’t for you.
I understand a lot of people are upset that we don’t seem to be pushing Indy hard enough - but the legal reality is we have only 2 options:
1) We get a mandate from voters to begin negotiations with the UK gov to either become Indy or have another vote OR:
2) we declare Indy.
Absolutely 100% agree with both Michael and Stephen here. We need to get out with one voice and say clearly:
Scotland, we are being buried under an avalanche of Tory austerity cuts, financial mismanagement & broke govt.
And the ONLY way to fix it is with indy
A wee thread 🧵
This is just vile. There is NO place in the Independence movement - or Scotland - for this disgusting anti-English racism.
Years of work by

, myself and other English Scots &
@EnglishScot4YES
undone by
@IndyScotParty
candidate in minutes.
The comparison of being asked to fill in AN APPLICATION FORM to run your largely untaxed business to Kristallnacht has got to be one of the most offensive and hyperbolic responses I’ve heard in Scottish politics.
Anyone standing beside this nonsense needs to get in the sea.
NEW: I spoke to STL owners, holiday letting agents & others affected by new licensing laws coming next month
One said regulations amounted to a 'pogrom' of the sector
This typically refers to massacre of Jews, will be found deeply offensive & I imagine doesn't help the campaign
This is truly incredible & atrocious. If they do not change their stance we can no longer consider the
@ScotTories
to be a democratic party.
If they refuse to recognize the outcome of an election, they are no better than that far-right fringe group Nicola stood her ground against
Interesting

Sorry Chris but here we differ.
If there’s a public discussion to be had around abortion, it’s one for women to have, not us guys. Their bodies. Their choice. Their discussion.
The abortion debate is tough. It’s at times sore & lacks wisdom to understand different views.
I believe an overwhelming majority do not support abortion without limitations. Surely then we should have a compassionate discussion on what we do agree on.

You very rarely hear an elected politician directly accusing someone of lying - for very good reasons.
That Mike Russell is also one of the senior ministers of government as well should therefore underline how serious and egregious this matter is.
Gove is a liar and needs stopped
No Michael you aren’t. Moreover you know you aren’t. The Internal Market Bill - in this as in the devolution clauses - is a nakedly political power grab and you have been found out. Now there are consequences so best to stop lying, & withdraw the bill.

MSPs received a 0.6% pay rise in 2018. The Scottish govt refused pay rises from 2009 onwards meaning their pay has been voluntarily frozen since then. Try again.
England enters a lockdown and the magic money tree blooms another £150 BILLION.
Alas, that tree only flowers when it suits England. Proof, if more was needed, that Scotland needs independence and our own currency & central bank.
NEW: The SNP have taken control of Argyll and Bute Council after a Tory-led group controlled it for 11 years
It comes after a furious row over the council's vote in February in favour of a 10% increase in council tax
And I say frankly that you don’t live in Scotland. You weren’t elected by Scots. The majority of Scots weren’t even born the last time the Tories won an election in Scotland.
You don’t get a say.
Scotland will decide if we wish to stay in your “precious Union”. Not you.
