France 🇫🇷 just sucks at marketing.
If the US 🇺🇸 had decarbonized its entire energy production in a decade, Ryan Gosling would star in the movie and the whole world would be talking about it and doing the exact same thing (ie. going all in on nuclear ☢️).
It took me 15 yrs to get the perfect British accent but some opportunities are too good to pass on. So I'll be moving to NYC with my family over the summer to help set up the new
@IndexVentures
office there.
See yall there! 👋🏻
We are thrilled to share that we’re opening an office in New York City 🗽 Joining existing offices in London & SF, we will now have a major presence in the top 3 global startup ecosystems.
More from
@martinmignot
&
@shardul_shah
on why we ❤️ NY:
Car accidents kill 43k people/year in the US alone and contribute to 15% of carbon emissions, and yet, years later, folks are still dunking on electric scooter startups... Yes the space hasn't produced returns so far - but Webvan failing didn't prevent ecom from becoming massive
My very first purchase after I landed in NYC was obviously a
@RadPowerBikes
, which conveniently doubles as a mobile bed. Turns out cycling in NYC, especially in Manhattan, is surprisingly good (compared to London standards, not Amsterdam's). 🗽
I’m always surprised when folks talk about how dangerous the subway is in NYC and seem totally oblivious that cars kill 50k and injure >2m (🤯) per year in the US, which are an outlier in the developed world. Needs size and speed limits on every vehicle to end the carnage.
Forget electric cars. Ebikes are the solution to all our urban transportation problem, and should be the one heavily subsidised.
We'll come to realise they were one of the most transformative inventions of the 21st century (the same way cars were in the 20th).
Swedish Research among new owners of e-bikes (n = 600) shows most e-bikes are used to replace car trips! ⚡️🚴♀️💪🚴♂️🌱
53% private car 👉 e-bike
25% public transport 👉 e-bike
18% regular bike 👉 e-bike

Since last month, ads for cars in France contain health warnings.
Big Car is the Big Tobacco of the 21st century.
And the same way we banned indoor smoking, we'll ban most driving in cities.
Car advertising takes first step down the road where tobacco, alcohol went before.
In
#France
car ads wil have to include one of these messages:
👉For short trips, favour walking or
#cycling
👉Consider carpooling
👉On a daily basis, take public transport

Love this visualisation of the downtown Manhattan tech scene.
This is the ultimate 15-minute city: 100s of top tech companies within a 15-minute bike ride from the
@IndexVentures
office in Meatpacking. Which city can beat this?
After a month in NYC I just crossed the 100-mile bar and now have definitive opinions on all things cycling there. While it is way better than I feared/people think, here are 7 measures they should copy from other cities around the world
Thread 🧵👇
1/7 The biggest problem is there are simply way too many huge cars moving around. Copy London and implement both a congestion charge and a pollution charge asap- it reduced traffic by 30% overnight and pollution by 25-50%
.
@pitdesi
I saw a ford 150 in my hometown of Dijon over the holiday break. It looked grotesquely out of proportion. People would expect you’re a weirdo for driving it there. Btw they also look grotesque in dense Manhattan streets, but folks still drive them here.
As the father of two young daughters, one of my biggest worries as they grow up is the catastrophic effect of social media on their mental health. That’s why I invested personally to support
@kschlenker
’s god work on controlling screen time through
@withopal
. Try it out.
Social media CAUSES mental illness, especially heavy use, especially in girls. I lay out the longitudinal and experimental evidence for causality in my latest post at the After Babel Substack:
@the_transit_guy
This is one of the saddest decisions for nyc. Are there still opportunities to reverse it ? A part of me wants to believe restaurants won’t actually with this madness
Adobe has agreed to buy
@Figma
for ≈$20B. Huge kudos to
@zoink
and team on building such an iconic design and collaboration company. A few thoughts on this extraordinary business and team that I had the pleasure to work with for a decade.

1/4 of people spend more time looking at themselves than at other participants on Zoom, while doing so massively increases fatigue (ie. wouldn't it be weird if someone was constantly following you with a mirror?). Luckily there is an option to "hide self view". You're welcome.
"Civil unrest primarily in the form of mass non-payment"... Don't think people fully realise how bleak this winter will be in the UK and in Europe, and how unpredictable the consequences, both politically and economically. It's not time to build, it's time to rebuild.
I'm afraid a financial cataclysm will hit the UK roughly the time the new PM starts, devastating lives
This is a video letter to u and Conservative leadership candidates, to help u, and plea for them to prepare and prevent the worst; energy, mortgages, cards & more. Pls share
7/7 And where are folks supposed to be parking their owned bikes? There is no secure parking infrastructure anywhere. Let's turn some of the many off street car parks into futurist bike parkings like in The Hague, Netherlands
Even with the worst air pollution in the world, it wouldn’t cross any NYC official’s mind to take measures to reduce driving. Car culture is what got us here and will keep us here for as long as it continues unchallenged.
Here's today's forecast for PM2.5 particulates for the NYC region from the
@NOAA
. Do you wonder what is making our region worse than north and west? CARS!
@NYCMayor
, do something to limit car use today.
This morning I ended up arguing with not one but two drivers at the same time on the morning school ride. It got so bad that one of them put his car across 7th avenue and tried to spit on me...
All because I dared telling the driver ahead of him that she was driving too fast and
I attended my first Evidence dinner hosted by
@damirbecirovic
last night, and this is a truly brilliant concept. Folks should be hosting them everywhere - they make for incredibly stimulating conversations
4/7 Nyc’s got the same grid design as Barcelona, why not try out superblocks too? Keep traffic on the avenues and the main arterial roads and make all the side streets access only ( the city of Barcelona,did air pollution and noise.)
5/7 Why not go for the spectacular and imitate Seoul’s Cheonggyecheon by turning Broadway into an urban park across the length of Manhattan? Given the immense success of the highline, there is clear appetite for more greenery and peace in Manhattan
@ZackPolanski
They did worse than that : they shelved the brilliant Vision for Soho which was essentially pedestrianisation. The plan is there and has been shared with locals already - just need to get it done now
2/7 There are way too many parked cars too. Let's like Oslo and remove all on-street parking to give space back to people and reduce traffic and road fatalities further. There has been 0 traffic death in Oslo since 2019.

@awaleolad
@TfL
Needs to rethink the whole ring road, from kings cross to the west way and turn it into a more human urban boulevard, with protected cycle tracks all along. There shouldn't be a highway in the middle of London.
3/7 Alternatively, why not got the DC way and start charging different rates based on the weight of vehicles to encourage people to downsize - why would anyone need a monster truck in NYC?
1/ As a fuel, natural gas has many compelling attributes. It burns cleanly and efficiently. It produces electricity and useful heat with less CO2 emissions and far fewer toxic byproducts than coal or oil. It is also abundant and ubiquitous.
@nntaleb
It's true for hot climates too. I used both a mechanical and an electric bike in NYC yesterday and I can confirm ebikes are an absolute game changer against sweat.
@QAGreenways
I think Holland is one of the big winners of the social media era - the world is suddenly realising how incredible the country is, and asking themselves why their own city couldn't look like that too?
@ourbikelanenyc
@NYC_DOT
Like Barcelona’s superblock or London’s Low Traffic Neighborhood. Motor vehicles can access every house but through-traffic is limited. In some London boroughs up to 70% of streets are LTNs and it’s a dream. No reason why it couldn’t be done across NYC
I asked for a decaf espresso in Paris and the waiter told me they didn't have decaf but offered me instead to put very little coffee and a lot of water in a cup and my mind is still reeling
I see many high-burn but cash-rich companies anticipate high interest income on their cash given how high the rates are today. While this will clearly help with cash burn in 2023, interest rates may come down as quickly as they've gone up, so better not bet on it in the future
@M_WrenchGang
@adamtranter
Love it. I once considered buying a white van to turn it into a bike storage unit for our street. Only way to get one without having to wait for 3 years
@helenpidd
What are the chances of it happening? Because it could become a beacon for the rest of world. Paris is doing it for the central arrondissements already but this looks even more ambitious
Looks like we're entering the final season of the
#Tether
drama. As predicted by
@Bitfinexed
and many others who've done brilliant community service over the years. Thanks for your work calling this out.
Fantastic and terrifying thread. Not sure why this is not the only thing people are talking about in the UK right now, because a GFC level of bailout is coming by September. If Bulb was Bear Stearns, who will be Lehman Brothers?
My latest:
Some genuinely terrifying analysis on UK energy bills…
💷bills >£5k, highest in >50y
🏡2/3 to be in fuel poverty
🏥home energy costs £193bn (>> education + defence)
…& political offerings not even close to meeting scale of the crisis
1/
6/7 I know new yorkers are very proud of their
@CitiBikeNYC
so I'm sorry to burst their bubbles but…they suck compared to any half-decent European city. In fact w 30 bikes/10k inhabitants it's lower than every EU capital, and almost 7x less than Milan.
When I asked if he had some chicory instead, he laughed at me and came back with a cup of hibiscus tea. Who said the quality of service in Paris hasn't improved recently?
@paulbz
The theory is that our entire economic system is built on the assumption of growth and it's very hard to impossible to grow without population growth. But on gdp/capita it may not be so bad - Japan seems to be doing OK economically, though it creates more sclerotic societies.
Great post on crypto from my partner
@dannyrimer
. We as VC are rewarded for being optimists who see the glass half-full, but we also need to keep a realistic view of a technology's potential. Not every breakthrough is the new Internet, but may still have some useful applications.
It’s time for a crypto rethink. We need to inject more realism into the discussion. Crypto spring is not coming, it is not the new internet, and there are still too many speculators looking for a quick buck -- but that doesn't mean the dream is dead.
Thanksfully, the great folks at
@TransAlt
are doing God’s work on the topic and
@NYCMayor
has signed up to their NYC 25X25 plan which would be pretty transformative.
@damirbecirovic
@tanayj
Most of Manhattan should be car free. It’s mostly flat, insanely dense, and has incredible public transport. And 80% of households there don’t own a car already.
Looks like there will be mass civil disobedience in the UK this winter and the government will have no other choice than nationalising/bailing out energy providers to keep prices down, like what just happened in France with EDF. Is there any other route?
@stateofsoho
@sohosocietyw1
@BobFromAccounts
@cutnoise
@CityWestminster
Some streets being quiet doesn't mean there isn't huge volume of traffic on other streets. Brewer street, wardour street, grt Malborough street etc are traffic sewers. In any other European capital soho would be a low traffic neighbourhood or fully pedestrianised
To my Parisian friends: you've got to go to this - most fun way you can spend a Sunday afternoon.
This was the latest ride in London for those who don't know
@domwhiting
yet:
FRANCE!!!!
Drum & Bass On The Bike Makes it’s way to FRANCE (Paris) for the FIRST TIME EVER THIS SUNDAY 2nd July Starting at 14:00Hrs from Pl. De Hôtel De Ville, 75004
@freshandlow
@Harr0uet
@gassee
I'm not talking about escooters alone but micromobility as a whole. I've got both an escooter for short errands and a cargo bike for the school run and grocery shopping. Escooters in free floating are just one extra option to help unbundle the car.
@Hackneycyclist
So hostile. The whole triangle should be redesigned around people not cars given how busy it is.
@willnorman
@TfL
is something in the plan?
@Lelievre_Adrien
@franceinfo
@CityWestminster
@maxpsullivan
Please turn fitzrovia, soho and Mayfair in LTNS, and add protected cycle lanes to Oxford Street, regent street, Shaftesbury avenue and picadilly. Sort Edgware road and the marble arch roundabout. You're starting from 0 so quite a bit to do...
@TransAlt
European cities have traffic reduction measures for high pollution days (like alternate license plates systems) - no reason why it couldn’t be done in nyc
@NAUD_JF
@Lelievre_Adrien
Exactement. Un écosystème sans faillite ne prend assez de risque ou garde sous perfusion artificielle des boîtes qui utilisent des ressources qui pourraient être mieux utilisées ailleurs. Et chaque échec donne des informations qui permettent aux autres de s'améliorer
@TransAlt
@DowntownNYC
Is anyone pushing for the same thing in Soho by any chance ? It makes no sense to have cars there, destroying both the cobblestones and the human experience
@s8mb
Bathhouse, especially Banya No.1 - Hoxton in London. You should actually eat and drink there as their Russian food is really nice, but the main activity is to get beaten up by big dudes with birch and oak branches
@DouglasKMurray
@OurielOhayon
It’s been a long time coming. When I used to live on Whitechapel road 15 years ago, there was a protest every Saturday in the little square across the street with a bunch of bearded men holding signs with “Sharia for the UK” written on them.
@ebottcher
Amazing ! Was high on the list of the must dos on the west side. Now can you fix Varick/canal/6th? One of the most dangerous areas I’ve ever had to cycle through…
@Altimor
I can confirm: biggest culture shock when moving to the US indeed. In France, I’d say Jancovici is responsible for 90% of it- this is very much his policy. And he has a point too - we can’t both claim to achieve Paris agreement reduction in emissions and not change our lifestyle
