In exactly one month from today I will start my conversion course from the A320 to the B787 and start a new chapter in my flying career which Iโm pretty excited about. I thought I might tweet about the course as I go through it so what would interest you? Let me know ๐ค
Very sad news that our entire

fleet is to be retired early because of the crisis in aviation. Itโs an aircraft dear to my heart and one I will always be proud to have flown. As a kid it was my dream to fly it ๐ข
I never understand why people refer to โgo-aroundsโ as โcrazyโ or using similar language. First of all a go around is a STANDARD safety procedure initiated at any point on final approach, usually in the landing configuration to discontinue that approach.
Delighted to be fully checked out as a

Captain today after my Rio trip with a fabulous crew to boot! Even better we flew the newest aircraft in the fleet home ๐๐จโโ๏ธโ ๐ฅ
Terrific visibility last night as we flew past New York at 41,000โ with Manhattanโs sights clearly visible. Sometimes the huge windows on the

Well my 2 day sim check completed today and for the first time ever in my career having passed it I feel more anxious than I did doing it. Managing in flight emergencies I can do, thinking about possible unemployment after 27yrs service less so
#britishairways
Not really โterrifyingโ but rather professionals using their skill and expertise to land SAFELY in challenging conditions. A great job too ๐ I donโt hear complex surgical procedures being described as terrifying ๐

Itโs a bright start to Christmas Eve. Wishing everyone on here a very Happy Christmas ๐ in spite of whatever restrictions exist where you are. Thanks for your comments on my mostly aviation ramblings during 2020 and letโs hope 2021 is a LOT better! ๐๐ค

I even got to park my car in front of it once! Iโve also crawled into the still hot afterburner section on arrival from JFK to perform inspections ๐๐ฅต

Todayโs departure of the last B747-400s in the BA fleet prompted me to look through my archive and what the jumbo jet meant to me. Iโve always loved the shape and my initial memories are with my brother watching them take off at LHR from the Queenโs Building

30+ tonnes of freight to bring back to the UK and a change of crew to operate home. On this leg we use 4 pilots - 2 Captains (Iโm one) and 2 First Officers
My first trip to

(another freighter trip) in over 10 years and in spite of the lock down lovely to walk around the city today. Iโd forgotten what a spectacular city it is
Air safety.
In 2021 there were four passenger plane tragedies in which 81 people sadly died.
But aviation safety standards are incredibly high.
On the roads globally, the World Health Organisation says 81 people die every 19 minutes.
Annual death toll 1.3m
Back at LHR having landed on 09R, something Iโve not done for years since my B747-400 days. 09L now closed and something Iโve never seen at LHR before - an illuminated X to denote a closed runway
If this event is as reported itโs almost unbelievable in terms of safety. However, Iโd like to pay tribute to the cabin crew member who undoubtedly saved lives that day - we are a team or nothing

Just to prove you never know what could be around the corner.... after an uneventful flight to
#SaoPaulo
overnight we arrived to unforecast massive thunderstorms which required some rapid re-routing near the airfield
Having operated numerous cargo only flights over the last few months today I get to carry passengers! Pleased to be seeing a small return towards a new โnormalโ and having a crew and passengers to look after rather than an empty cabin

fleet parked up at Chateauroux Airport - the place I did my base training (first jet flights) in a B737-400 back in 1999 [images taken from drone footage by the airfield]
4/ However, both I and the FO were delighted to get back in the air after a month of not flying. It is situations like this that make me realise I LOVE being in the air
Tonight the construction of the cardboard bomber is complete. It is a total co-incidence that my partner is away this evening and Iโm sure will be super impressed at the change in decor to our lounge ๐ฌ๐คซ. If this is my last tweet you will know why ๐

1/ An interesting day out today an an unusual rotation. LHR ZRH FRA LHR operating a B787-8 as a freighter carrying high value cargo and mail around Europe. T5 was totally deserted - Iโve never seen immigration or the baggage hall devoid of a single passenger
Given how pointless some of these destinations are for UK travellers Iโm slightly disappointed the Moon and Mars are not listed either ๐๐คท๐ปโโ๏ธ๐จโโ๏ธ
911 became a defining event to my generation and changed my industry forever. Watching a documentary last night I could remember that day at work in perfect detail. Itโs still as upsetting and difficult to watch the footage 20 years later as it was then

We had an interesting failure in the electrical system on our way out to HYD. The lowest level of alert on the aircraft are STATUS messages. These are inhibited for certain phases of flight to avoid distraction to the crew. After take off we had multiple messages appear
Finally another B777 being fitted with an flight crew overhead rest compartment - a remarkable amount of work to do it. I did tell them every pilot who uses it will appreciate it a lot!! ๐๐๐
Even with a total hydraulic failure (virtually impossible) the

A visit to the once famous chequerboard for Kai Tak airport. Not done this before and fun to see a bit of history which is still being maintained. The airport itself is now a cruise terminal and park
Coming home from the simulator at midnight I ended up watching a documentary on Obama. A thoughtful, intelligent, charismatic man of integrity. Regardless of your politics I still struggle with the concept of Trump in the White House. What a disaster for the USA

This is one of the most dangerous things Iโve ever heard an airline CEO say. It speaks to a fundamental lack of understanding of fatigue and its effects on flight
#safety
Deficient safety culture alert!
@WizzAir
CEO encourages pilots to fly fatigued! Itโs like handing the car keys to a drunk driver.

My excitement has been rather dampened by the fact that weโre not allowed to leave our hotel room for the duration of our stay ๐ญ
The fourth and final heritage livery has just been confirmed. This will be the Negus design which was painted on the fleet from 1974 to 1980. B747-400 G-CIVB will be re-painted shortly
Thinking of all my colleagues at BA today, wherever you work and however long youโve been here. Many people are finding out whether they have a job anymore. See you on the other side and I hope for a bright future for those leaving
