My dear father Gary Evans died of COVID-19/pneumonia complications Jan. 29. He was 70.
I wrote for
@latimes
about what his death has meant for me as a daughter and health reporter.
He was my biggest fan.
Iโll be heartbroken until the end of my days.
If we really want to fix journalism we should provide trauma informed training for entry level reporters before sending them to knock on doors of people who just lost loved ones.
We treat it like a rite of passage when in reality itโs traumatizing for all parties involved.
Been thinking a lot about the heaviness of grief among Black folks in 2020.
I wrote for
@TheAtlantic
about the Black bereavement crisis weโre facing and what it means to not have the privilege or time to grieve in a year amplified by losses.
After a decade away Iโm going back to my home state to be an
@latimes
health reporter.
Iโll be doing enterprise reporting on race, public health + more in Los Angeles + statewide.
Itโs a job family, friends and mentors have said: โMarissa, this is you.โ
I spoke to
@Oprah
for
@latimes
about executive producing
@SmithsonianChan
โs
#thecolorofcare
, the pandemic and her reflections on how her privilege has shaped her healthcare for better and for worse.
Thank you Ms. Winfrey for being so kind and candid.
2020 will be marked as a particularly trying year of Black mourning from family/friends lost to COVID-19 plus George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Kobe Bryant, Chadwick Boseman to countless other folks.
The stresses of grieving folks we know personally or afar is real.
How did this interview with
@Oprah
for
@latimes
come about?
She read my essay about my fatherโs death. She noted she is the same as he was where birthdays are not a big deal. But she was struck realizing he died on her birthday.
Really curious about a follow-up story on how many state attorney general offices go after people for price gouging hand sanitizer and masks when health care workers are rationing the ones they have amid the shortage.
When I read two years ago about
@DrBurkeHarris
becoming Californiaโs first surgeon general I knew I wanted to write a profile on her.
For
@latimes
I talked to her about leading in a pandemic, health inequities and how she was born to be a doctor.
Itโs my first day today working for

The BeyHive protects her because her existence and music is a refuge.

Iโm aware the Biden-Harris transition plan website is newly up but as a housing reporter I immediately noticed thereโs nothing on there about how theyโll address the eviction crisis thatโs coming because of the pandemic.
Thrilled I'm going to be
@StarTribune
's social issues reporter starting April 8. I'm covering public health, housing, affordability + equity. Lots of enterprise reporting awaits.
Excited to call the Midwest home again (thank goodness I still have my winter coats from MKE).
I spoke with Emmett Tillโs family for
@latimes
about calls for an โEmmett Till momentโ after the Uvalde school shooting.
Theyโre unsure if showing gruesome images of how the kids died will have the same effect as seeing Emmettโs face did in 1955.
Humbled to share my
@TexasTribune
project on why Texas women face pregnancy complications or death from childbirth.
Took months of interviews to understand scope of how Texas got here, where Texas has failed women and how families are impacted.
The thing about
@nhannahjones
โs statement is more Black women are saying โI refuseโ when it comes to fixing institutional and structural inequities that institutions rigidly choose to not fix despite our blueprints and memos to solve them.
I for one am here for this movement.
Last month I interviewed
@Usher

@latimes

He lit a candle, sat down next to me and we talked about his new album, the Vegas residency, his voice and his ideas around love and romance.
Iโll be thinking about this interview for a long time.
Have long maintained Meghan Markle was a great writer and was admittedly sad when she went to the royal family that she likely wouldnโt be able to publish much anymore.
Saddened by her NYT op-ed today but I wouldnโt be surprised if writing is a healing/coping mechanism for her.

Kirstin Johnson-Nixon worried she might get COVID-19.
Then her dad tested positive for it in May.
Then her mom.
Then her.
Then her husband.
Then their kids.

The Atlanta shooting is highlighting the barriers to mental health care Asian communities face: lack of Asian mental health workers, language barriers and ignorance about traumas theyโve faced in America.
My first

To have
@Beyonce

@serenawilliams
not only LANDING THE COVERS OF
@voguemagazine
but also opening up about their pregnancy complications as black women within MONTHS of each other is powerful and wild and shows black women maternal morbidity is unkind to so many black moms.
The POCs at
@StarTribune
have been doing a lot of work in recent weeks to reimagine diversity, equity and coverage in our newsroom.
Humbled to be part of that team + write opening words of the diversity blueprint weโre releasing today.
Change is coming.
My father was retired.
He was learning Spanish and French on Rosetta Stone and YouTube. He had just started working on his novel last summer. He still wanted to take our mom to Spain.
I donโt care what anyone says, 70 feels too soon to be gone.
Really wild after all of these years writing and reading about maternal health that itโs considered a health innovation to save Black mothers from dying of childbirth.
Just save Black mothers. Just listen to Black mothers when they say something is wrong.
Normalizing masks.
Safer childbirth for Black mothers.
mRNA vaccines for cancers.

In the last century, the average human life expectancy doubled. Here's
@NYTMag

I wish journalists of color were extended this kind of grace, potential and right to correct period.
I keep looking at this photo I took of my father the day before my birthday in December.
A copy is now in my living room and I keep looking at it and saying โIโm really just supposed to go on without you?โ
DMXโs death is heartbreaking and speaks to how addiction is an ongoing journey and how often Black people are not always given the grace they deserve when dealing with addiction.
@Nicole_Cliffe
One comment says "I would suggest getting therapy and learning how to be an empathetic and compassionate person - right now you are not a good person." I almost need to save this somewhere.
Itโs never the best time to announce this but been meaning to share I received a layoff notice from

One more thing about vaccine side effects issue: Rest is considered a luxury for people with low-income.
It shouldnโt be but in our capitalist society, it is. Itโs unsurprising someone who isnโt vaccinated yet might delay because itโs deal with side effects or be short on rent.
I moved back to California in June.
Whenever I visited my parentsโ house my father would say โbring it in, bring it inโ and give me a big hug.
He only ever gave me two nicknames in life. โPeachโ because I always chose her in Mario Kart and โFront Pageโ because of my stories.
A reminder for those who need it that you donโt have to watch the Adam Toledo, Daunte Wright or other footage if you donโt want to.
Bearing witness isnโt just watching videos, itโs also for feeling the pain and trauma of those impacted by these events. Thatโs oftentimes enough.
As I wrote in

:
โHow much longer could [Black boys and men] live if they knew the world wanted them to have openly human experiences of breathing, crying, grieving, being cared for and being heard?โ
The Olympics has a lot of news coming out of it but one of the running themes Iโm seeing is women competing and expressing their agency to the fullest about what they need to compete and making sure theyโre heard regardless of outcome.

Thereโs a lot going on here but the gag is he assumes that sheโll forgive him and thinks she should. This is the second or third AITA post in recent months about men policing /mansplaining how menstrual products work. What a time.
Grieving has been lonely, disappointing and many moments of deep sadness, crying and dishes piling up.
Iโm eating but little tastes good.
Iโve stared at trees and birds hoping to see a sign of my father.
The pain of those first days without him hits me out of no where.
Iโm sharing my familyโs ordeal with COVID-19 because itโs important to show how heartbreaking it is to lose a loved one in this way.
Whatโs more, I know how much my father wanted to be heard, understood and seen when he went to the doctor. He deserved that and more.
My father had pre-existing conditions so he was at risk if he had COVID-19. He was vaccinated + boosted.
Despite the moments the healthcare system had let him down before the pandemic, my father still attempted to have faith.
Iโm angry we were robbed of him.
My father was endlessly proud of me.
There are many strangers who walked in Seaport Village or Balboa Park who happened to talk to a Black man with a Marquette hat who had three kids, including one who is โan award winning journalist.โ
He said he โhad to throw that in there.โ

Lots of convos happening around bringing more women of color into the fold/activism around reproductive rights. Will be curious to see if that extends to putting more in leadership roles.
Weโve lost four family members since the pandemic started including my momโs uncle, my maternal grandmother, my father + an aunt.
My father and aunt died from COVID-19. Half of the people weโve lost since 2020 have died from COVID. I know other families have lost so many more.
My father loved the Weather Channel and told me the weather in places I used to live in like Minneapolis, Milwaukee, Austin and DC.
He loved baseball and his favorite player was Roberto Clemente. His favorite book was โThe Hobbitโ but he read โLord of the Ringsโ multiple times.
My father grew up in 1950s Bed-Stuy Brooklyn.
He survived a heart attack, a stroke, kidney cancer and prostate cancer. He had always pulled through other health issues.
We hoped and planned as if heโd walk out of the hospital ICU, breathing on his own and COVID free.

To be clear, even with this verdict Minneapolis will be working to heal for a long time and it truly might not happen in our lifetime. This city is forever changed.
Wow: A original 1955 warrant for the arrest of Carolyn Bryant Donham, the white woman who accused 14-year-old Emmett Till, was found in the basement of a Mississippi courthouse
Till's relatives want authorities to finally arrest her nearly 70 years later
Waited two weeks and Iโm fully vaccinated as of today.
I got the Johnson & Johnson vaccine through a local CVS in a Target dressing room stall (very poetic for folks who know my love for Target well). I know the value of hearing other peopleโs experience so wanted to share. ๐งต
The discussion about Abbott Elementary doing an episode on school shootings is another example of how often people hope Black women will โsay the thingโ or โdo the thingโ like the odds are inherently in our favor when we speak up with or without a platform.
I applied to be EIC of my college newspaper. Had ideas, had more internships (five!) than the other white male candidate and wasnโt chosen because of โconcernsโ from the board I wasnโt collaborative. Wouldโve been the first Black woman to have the role in its 100 year history.
Iโve been a health reporter for almost a decade and the foundation of my work has always been my father.
The spark came in summer 2010 when my father told me in a Little Caesarโs Pizza parking lot that he had kidney and prostate cancer.

Judge Ezra issues a permanent injunction on Texas' fetal remains rule. Says the rule is "well-intentioned" but "problematic and presently unworkable" and would be "catastrophic" for women in Texas.

Gentle reminder to folks that you donโt have to watch the video of Tyre Nichols if you donโt want to do so.
Youโre not in less community with others for not watching it and taking care of yourself.
For those who are planning to watch it, please take care of yourself.
Months before my father died I learned to make chicken pot pies so he wouldnโt buy the frozen ones and he really loved them.
I made a chicken pot pie to mark what wouldโve been his 71st birthday this past week and Fatherโs Day (it was one of my best ๐ฅง). I love you, Dad.

I just want to know how in the year 2021 someone in editorial leadership could have the confidence to tell a candidate this and not blink.
Make the publication public and let journalists of color and others who care about diversity decide if they want to work for this org.
The editor went on to explain why he was reluctant to bring in diverse journalists. "I don't want them writing about racial justice and stuff like that. That's not what we do here." 3/
Education is a beat that deserves to be elevated in more newsrooms. Itโs no accident some of the best reporters in the industry right now are education reporters or have a strong background in education reporting.
Wow, just a classic example of a man dismissing education as "women's work" or not important.
I can't stand one more day of people disregarding education journalism because of their own internalized misogyny.
The journalists sharing stories debate is also arguably a media literacy issue too.
Audiences donโt always realize not all newsrooms allow that practice and not all journalists ask if an interviewee has ever been interviewed before to make sure they understand the process.

I think this is an important conversation to have in our industry.
But as someone who has moved multiple times and swiped their debit card on a prayer to move across country, drained savings and dipped into their 401k, companies need to overhaul how they do moving expenses.
Also if you are trying to become a journalist and you're not willing to move for your next job.... you are missing out on opportunities.
Small/mid-sized markets deserve great journalism too and are great options to cut your teeth, try a new discipline or just make an impact.
