My dear father Gary Evans died of COVID-19/pneumonia complications Jan. 29. He was 70. I wrote for @latimes about what his death has meant for me as a daughter and health reporter. He was my biggest fan. Iโ€™ll be heartbroken until the end of my days.

If we really want to fix journalism we should provide trauma informed training for entry level reporters before sending them to knock on doors of people who just lost loved ones. We treat it like a rite of passage when in reality itโ€™s traumatizing for all parties involved.

Been thinking a lot about the heaviness of grief among Black folks in 2020. I wrote for @TheAtlantic about the Black bereavement crisis weโ€™re facing and what it means to not have the privilege or time to grieve in a year amplified by losses.

2020 will be marked as a particularly trying year of Black mourning from family/friends lost to COVID-19 plus George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Kobe Bryant, Chadwick Boseman to countless other folks. The stresses of grieving folks we know personally or afar is real.

How did this interview with @Oprah for @latimes come about? She read my essay about my fatherโ€™s death. She noted she is the same as he was where birthdays are not a big deal. But she was struck realizing he died on her birthday.

I wish more fellowship programs realized some fellows just need funding rather than forcing mentorship, group reflection and extra assignments/tasks on them. Forms of guidance and resources should be offered but fellows should have autonomy on how they use these tools.

TW: Suicide attempt I wrote for @elemental about how suicide attempt survivors navigate the stress of their medical debt, an important but underreported topic. Big thanks to the survivors and experts who spoke to me + my editor on this @acsifferlin .

Itโ€™s official: @StarTribune is capitalizing the B for Black from this day forward. We still have work to do on diversity and equity in the newsroom but this is a start.

Yesterday was my last day with @latimes . Iโ€™m looking forward to answering the big question ahead. Who will I be now that I am free? Iโ€™m excited to find out while freelance writing + illustrating. You can keep up with me with my newsletter here:

Itโ€™s never the best time to announce this but been meaning to share I received a layoff notice from @latimes last month. Not ideal, some feelings about it, but alas, we move. A quick thread on what Iโ€™m thinking about next. Walk with me. ๐Ÿงต

I just want to know how in the year 2021 someone in editorial leadership could have the confidence to tell a candidate this and not blink. Make the publication public and let journalists of color and others who care about diversity decide if they want to work for this org.

The editor went on to explain why he was reluctant to bring in diverse journalists. "I don't want them writing about racial justice and stuff like that. That's not what we do here." 3/

Education is a beat that deserves to be elevated in more newsrooms. Itโ€™s no accident some of the best reporters in the industry right now are education reporters or have a strong background in education reporting.

Wow, just a classic example of a man dismissing education as "women's work" or not important. I can't stand one more day of people disregarding education journalism because of their own internalized misogyny.

The journalists sharing stories debate is also arguably a media literacy issue too. Audiences donโ€™t always realize not all newsrooms allow that practice and not all journalists ask if an interviewee has ever been interviewed before to make sure they understand the process.

For @latimes subscriber exclusive and on the front page today I talked to COVID-19 vaccinated parents delaying weaning โ€” and mixing human milk in their kidsโ€™ cereal โ€” to pass on antibodies. To them, itโ€™s the best protection they can give younger kids.

Friends: Thanks to my @StarTribune story on how hospitals in Minnesota can take tax refunds for unpaid medical debt, just got word a reader has officially paid off Jeanโ€™s last payments for her debt. This is why local news matters.

Jean Hehn is making payments on $3,400 in medical debt. Using Minnesotaโ€™s Revenue Recapture program, the private hospital sheโ€™s paying back filed to get Hehnโ€™s state tax refund. She hasnโ€™t seen her refund in four years. My story for @StarTribune .

I think this is an important conversation to have in our industry. But as someone who has moved multiple times and swiped their debit card on a prayer to move across country, drained savings and dipped into their 401k, companies need to overhaul how they do moving expenses.

Also if you are trying to become a journalist and you're not willing to move for your next job.... you are missing out on opportunities. Small/mid-sized markets deserve great journalism too and are great options to cut your teeth, try a new discipline or just make an impact.

Remember my @startribune story about how private hospitals in Minnesota can take peopleโ€™s tax refunds for unpaid medical debt? Some #mnleg lawmakers were shocked seeing the story and have filed bills to end the practice. My friend @jessvanb has details.

Making progress in the money in journalism conversation requires dismantling the idea journalism is solely โ€œa callingโ€ instead of a business and thereโ€™s supplementary work often required to achieve the time, resources and creative freedom desired to tell the stories you want.

I wrote for @latimes โ€™ front page today on COVID-19 vaccine rates for Black and Latino males in Los Angeles County are rising but not by enough. Part of the issue: theyโ€™re frustrated public health officials only pay attention to them in times of crisis.

@TracieHunte Thatโ€™s the thing! Itโ€™s like, do you keep up the accent because the hot man likes it? Or do you show him who you really are? The plot twists are endless. Iโ€™ve never watched The Bachelor and Iโ€™m now a fan.
