Lib Dem Parliamentary Candidate for Chelmsford
Deputy Leader,
@ChelmsCouncil
Essex County Councillor
Promoted by Liberal Democrats, 1 Vincent Square, SW1P 2PN.
#Chelmsford
is my home and I'm proud to be standing to be our next Member of Parliament. Here's why I'm asking you to vote for me and the
@LibDems
on 4th July.
If you haven't watched last night's
#Panorama
, you really should. Everything in it is shocking and should be reason enough for swathes of resignations at all levels of government.
Here is a photo of my friend, a nurse on a
#COVID19
ward, before and after they downgraded her PPE.
Just in case you ever need the details, between 1999 and 2016, the UK had the following voting record when it comes to EU laws that were passed:
Yes (the UK wanted the law): 2466 times
Abstained (the UK wasn't too sure): 70 times
No (the UK didn't want it, but tough): 56 times
My local MP is
@vickyford
. Since February 2020, she has been the Minister for Children.
She has just voted against making sure school children have enough to eat.
Interesting to note from yesterday's results:
@LibDems
got 1.2 million more votes than in the last General Election.
Our vote was up 4% across the country.
Despite that, we ended up with one less seat.
Electoral reform anyone?
Just a little reminder of the EU referendum results:
Leave: 17,410,742
Remain: 16,141,241
Leave majority: 1,269,501
If 634,751 had voted Remain instead of Leave, Remain would have won.
Not a very large number for
#CambridgeAnalytica
to have influenced to swing the result.
Calling all investigative journalists: perhaps the biggest thing you can do to help the UK right now is expose the real reason why
@BBCNews
is not reporting
#Brexit
stories properly. The Beeb has so much influence in so many homes. Please help it find the right path again.
On the doorsteps, I sometimes get committed Conservative voters tell me about Boris Johnson's government's handling of Covid that they don't think anyone else could have done a better job.
This inquiry is telling us that almost anyone could probably have done a better job.
This inquiry is painting a clear picture of a Conservative Party totally unfit to govern our country.
Every shocking revelation is another devastating blow to the families who lost loved ones to COVID.
Out canvassing in Oswestry, North Shropshire this afternoon for the fabulous
@helenhalcrow
. Lots of lovely usually-Green voters lending us their vote as they know the
@LibDems
are the only ones who can beat the Tories in this by-election.
Be under absolutely no illusion - a vote on Thursday for either the Conservatives or Labour will be taken as an endorsement of
#Brexit
. If you are Pro-EU, it is crucial that you vote
#ABTV
. Extraordinary times call for extraordinary measures.
Exactly 6 years ago, I awoke to the most heartbreaking vote of my lifetime: the UK's disastrous decision to leave the European Union.
Today, I awoke to a simply stunning by-election victory delivered by the party I am proud to belong to.
The future looks a little brighter. ๐ถ
I'm very pleased to have been appointed the
@ChelmsLibDems
Parliamentary Spokesperson.
Not quite sure where to start, though. Alleged withholding of constituency funds for not backing the PM? A PM who sets rules that are so hard to follow even he can't work them out?
(Quick ๐งต)
So
@DavidDavisMP
- your advice to all businesses is basically to stockpile (like the
#NHS
is doing with insulin and other medicines).
With whose money and in whose warehouses? SMEs can't afford to do this and big businesses won't have the space.
@JasonJHunter
Honoured to have been re-selected by
@ChelmsLibDems
to fight the next General Election in
#Chelmsford
.
I have a vision of a thriving city in a compassionate country, standing proudly with others on the global stage, alongside international friends.
Canโt wait to
#GTTO
.
Genuinely outraged today to hear of a Conservative MP who allegedly told their constituents to stop campaigning against cladding issues because it will make their flats harder to sell!
Errr... The fire risk and the huge remediation costs will do that!
#EndOurCladdingScandal
@mrjamesob
The public need to be treated like adults. Tell them the truth.
If something went wrong, ask why.
If something went right, ask why again - learn.
We owe it to those who have already died and those whose loved ones will never return, to make sure their deaths were not in vain.
Good luck to all the ๐ถ
@LibDems
๐ถ standing in today's local elections and to all those getting out there helping them.
Democracy is nothing if we don't take part in it.
Fingers crossed for dry weather and some great results. ๐ค๐
Interesting that when George Galloway gets elected in a by-election, Sunak makes an impromptu speech about combating extremism. But when a Tory donor calls for a black MP to be shot, the PM's silence is deafening. A General Election can't come soon enough.
#GTTO
Deeply honoured to have been re-elected by the Chelmsford Liberal Democrat group to be Deputy Leader of
@ChelmsCouncil
, alongside Council Leader,
@sj_robinson
. Looking forward to making Chelmsford even fairer, greener and more-connected.
Proud to be at the launch of the
@LibDems
manifesto with many of our fab candidates including the brilliant
@libdemdaisy
.
#Chelmsford
voters tell me the NHS is a key priority for them. Delighted we have an ambitious and fully-costed plan to save the NHS and fix the care crisis.
I've spent much of this year helping children and families with
#SEND
. I'm so proud to be standing for election for a party whose leader understands first-hand the struggles that so many parents face, and who cares about making a difference.
Caring isnโt just my family's story, it is the story of millions, caring for each other, dealing with tough times, and keeping going with love.
Sharing our story hasn't been easy, but it's important. It's time to bring carers' experiences into the light.
Iโd like to express my heartfelt thanks to the
@BCGreenParty
for setting aside tribal politics and standing aside in favour of me and the
@ChelmsLibDems
.
We will continue the vital work on climate change and homelessness we all support.

Thank you to everyone who voted for me and my fabulous Lib Dem colleagues yesterday. I am incredibly proud to have been re-elected to represent Moulsham and Central and for my party to have an increased majority on Chelmsford City Council. ๐ถ๐ถ๐ถ
#LocalElections2023
Delighted to have played a tiny part in electing our fabulous new MP
@helenhalcrow
. Such a stunning result. Thank you to everyone who helped and everyone in North Shropshire who lent the
@LibDems
their vote, many for the very first time.
LOTS of thoughts about David Cameron being appointed Foreign Secretary, but I'd just like to remind everyone that our most senior representative to the world, apart from the PM, is now entirely unelected. This is not how a fully-fledged democracy should work.
Last night's
@LibDems
by-election win in Somerton & Frome was stunning. Here's a handy comparison of how the swing there compares to what we need to do in
#Chelmsford
... If you want to help with that, get in touch!
I've just posted my postal vote in the general election. No prizes for guessing who I voted for (although it was quite a strange experience!).
Let us know if you've already voted here:
@LibDems
We're just a few days into the general election campaign and here in
#Chelmsford
we've already been out speaking to voters. We've also delivered a leaflet across the entire constituency with another one ready to go.

For some reason that I can't quite work out, all of your tweets (not just the Brexit-related ones) make me feel better about the world.
And I can picture the scenes you describe so well. Wish I knew who you really were so I could buy your books, but maybe the enigma is better.
@jonsnowC4
I am watching in absolute disgust. There are children living in abject poverty, people dying on hospital waiting lists, a growing number of people who won't have a roof over their heads this Christmas, and then there's
#Brexit
.
Yet our politicians choose to debate this instead!
Thank you so much to everyone who came out in
#Chelmsford
today to help get my campaign off to a flying start. Leaflets delivered, poster boards going up and lots of conversations on the doorsteps. Less than six weeks to go!

Really lovely response on the doorsteps in North Shropshire today with
@helenhalcrow
. Voters from all corners of the political spectrum getting excited at the prospect of their vote actually counting for once.
Canvassing teams out with
@helenhalcrow
in Market Drayton this morning.
Residents were telling us they know that in North Shropshire only local LibDem Helen Morgan can defeat Johnsonโs Tory from Birmingham.

The hypocrisy of the
@Conservatives
in triggering a vote of no confidence in
@theresa_may
is outrageous.
Why should they get to vote again on their leader while they deny the public the right to vote again on
#Brexit
?
Surely they knew what they were voting for the first time?
Amazing to be part of the parade through
#Chelmsford
high street yesterday at the start of
#EssexPride
. Such a joyful event celebrating human diversity - a key part of liberal values. Well done to the organisers for making it bigger and better every year!
So, Boris Johnson claimed he had to prorogue parliament because the government needed a new legislative agenda. But now he produces one of the weakest, lacklustre manifestos seen in years.
Johnson isn't a leader - he's a charlatan.
Vote for a
#BrighterFuture
- vote
@LibDems
.
Thank you to everyone who voted for me and the
@ChelmsLibDems
yesterday. I am very grateful for all the support and proud of our campaign in which we doubled our vote share.
I look forward to continuing to build a better future for Chelmsford through Chelmsford City Council.
This afternoon, I met with one of the residents of the Marconi Evolution development in
#Chelmsford
. She described how the developer, Bellway, had removed the
#cladding
panels in 2019 (2 years after
#Grenfell
) to fit fire breaks, but then refitted the same cladding! Shocking.
It's official!
My nomination papers have been submitted and accepted, so I am officially the
@LibDems
Parliamentary Candidate for
#Chelmsford
.
Bring it on!
@ChelmsLibDems
And with these two wonderful newly (re-)elected councillors in Moulsham Lodge, Mark Springett and David Jones, the
@LibDems
have 29 and now TAKE CONTROL OF CHELMSFORD CITY COUNCIL!!!
Seems like this is roughly how CCHQ view the next election. Some very revealing seats here, like Brackell, Chelmsford, Folkestone and Surrey Heath. And it could well be worse than this
This was the moment that
@Essex_CC
publicly admitted to me that only 1% of EHCPs are issued within the 20-week statutory deadline. Quite extraordinary.
@education4all23
#SEND
I spoke to a man today who said he had voted Leave but he really regretted it. A woman who didnโt vote at all in 2017 and regretted that. They are both, happily, voting
@LibDems
in
#GE2019
. Life is too short for regrets, and this election is crucial. โฌ๏ธ
24,830 people arrived in the UK by small boats from Jan-Sep 2023. Even if it happens, the Rwanda scheme will only deport 100 of them.
How would the scheme be a deterrent to the other 24,730?
It's cruel, it's inhumane and it won't even work. But it is very right-wing.
#GTTO
So, Russia has been officially blamed for the Skripal poisonings. But Russia sees the UK as pretty weak so isn't too worried about repercussions. Now, if only we had a big group of nearby friendly countries that we could work with to impose sanctions...
Absolutely delighted that

have agreed to โwholly fund and deliver removal and replacement of the cladding [on

Had such a great response on the doorsteps of
#Chelmsford
today. Fabulous to be joined by some very new, very young members who were just brilliant at talking to voters. Awe inspiring to see young people so well informed and engaged in politics. Thank you so much for joining us.
Let there be light! A huge thank you to the fabulous team at
@ChelmsCouncil
for helping residents feel safe by installing these new lights in
#Chelmsford
's Central Park. I'll keep chasing the ones that
@Essex_CC
have left broken for years. In the meantime, it's now much safer.
I would be deeply honoured to be elected as Chelmsford's next MP. Let's do something different in Chelmsford on 12th December.

This advice also doesn't help businesses like my own. We import high-performance bespoke windows and doors from the EU. Each item is manufactured to order for an individual project and to specifications and size combinations that change with each job. How do we stockpile that?
Or how about the huge cost of living increases, despite the PM claiming the exact opposite in the House of Commons? Inflation at 5 (yes, FIVE) percent!
In just a few short hours, we will find out what the future holds for our country and for Chelmsford.
I've been humbled by the messages of support, both from natural Lib Dem voters and those lending me their vote - some of them voting Lib Dem for the first time ever.
Thank you.

I was honoured to be called to speak at the
@LibDems
Autumn Conference in a debate about new policy around education and investing in our childrenโs future. I spoke in support of the expansion of provision of extra-curricular activities.
Ah, I hear Priti Patel is doing the old non-apology apology thing: "I'm sorry if people think..." when asked if she will apologise for the lack of PPE.
Typical slippery shoulder routine.
Can't bring myself to watch these daily updates anymore.

Despite all the talk of leaving the ECHR, this, from paragraph 26 of the Supreme Court's judgment is key: "The principle of non-refoulement is therefore given effect not only by the ECHR but also by other international conventions to which the United Kingdom is party."
Yesterday,
@Essex_CC
stopped parents of children with special educational needs or disabilities (
#SEND
) from asking questions. It was the 2nd time in a month. Essex has a shocking SEND record and are failing children and families. Here's my speech calling for change.
Nice to see Chelmsford turning Lib Dem. ๐
Not hard to believe after our
#LE2023
results where we retained control of Chelmsford City Council and where the incumbent Tory MP only has TWO Conservative city councillors in her constituency.
(Labour has ZERO councillors.)
Very pleased to see this. Far too many children, parents and families are being failed and having to fight for support for
#SEND
. Local authorities, including
@Essex_CC
, seem to make decisions based on money rather than what children need. That has to stop.
No child, or their family, should have to wait so long or fight so hard to have their needs met.
The Conservative Government has woefully underfunded both schools and local authorities, meaning that many parents simply canโt get their children the support they deserve.
At todayโs Full Council meeting of
@Essex_CC
, I proposed a motion to support the provision of more health & GP services across
#Essex
. Iโm delighted that it received unanimous, cross-party support โ something that is very rare at
@Essex_CC
.

This is my friend. She's a nurse who's been working on a
#COVID19
ward for the last two weeks. This is a comparison of her PPE two weeks ago (left) and last night (right).
Yesterday, her glove had a finger missing.
Neither appropriate nor safe.
A great day in Highwoods Ward speaking to residents and picking up casework with Simon Appleton.
Thanks for support from
@mariecgoldman
and friends.
Important issues picked up and good support for Simon Appleton and Alison Jay.
Sorting rubbish into 7 different bins? That's been working well for years in Chelmsford.
1. Black bin - Non-recyclable general waste
2. Brown bin - Garden waste
3. Small green bin - Food
4. Plastic box - Glass, metals
5. Sack - Paper
6. Sack - Cardboard
7. Plastic sack - Plastic
This is absolutely shocking! I had hoped that
#Chelmsford
would escape this disgraceful practice but no such luck. This must stop - but like so many other awful things that are going on, it's going to take a change of government to happen.
#GTTO
Raw sewage dumping in Chelmsford's rivers has soared by an outrageous 1000% in 2023 compared to 2022.
People in Chelmsford are sick of Conservative MPs voting time and again to allow water companies to get away with this environmental vandalism.
This scandal is affecting hundreds of thousands of leaseholders right across the country, including in
#Chelmsford
. The government's recent announcement that they are making some leaseholders take out loans to cover remedial costs is shameful.
Boris Johnson completely demeans the office of Prime Minister. He stands for the exact opposite of truth, dignity, honesty and integrity that I believe our country to be founded on. The UK finds itself in a very sad and precarious situation. It's well past time for him to go.
What an amazing day in

Only a few minutes into the ITV debate and the thing that is immediately obvious is that neither of these two are statesmen.
They don't make me feel proud to be British - they make me sad for what once was.
Britain deserves far, far better than this mediocrity.
Yes, schools should close.
No, this wasn't inevitable.
But yes, it was predictable.
Our NHS is overwhelmed. Our teachers are being put in a horrendous situation.
All of this is entirely the responsibility of a Conservative government that has failed to prepare for anything.
It was my absolute pleasure to meet the team at
@homestartessex

We had the pleasure of hosting Marie Goldman, Lib Dem, Deputy Leader of Chelmsford City Council.Marie joined us at our Chelmsford Family Group earlier this month & wrote an article about this in her weekly Essex Chronicle Article.
Bye bye Boris. Good riddance to the man who was never fit to be a Member of Parliament let alone a Prime Minister. His incapability of acknowledging that facts, truth and integrity should apply to him never left him, as his resignation letter proves. Appalling lack of humility.
*Very* excited that

What a load of rubbish.
Point 1 is a matter of opinion.
Point 2 is a wishlist, not a certainty.
Point 3 is less cooperative.
Point 4 does nothing of the sort. You are taking my rights to live, work and travel freely in the EU. That doesn't protect my rights - it removes them.
So, schools are shutting (despite yesterday the PM having declared them safe), but that isn't the end of the story.
The government MUST now ensure that all pupils have access to a laptop or similar, and decent broadband, to access online learning. Parents must be supported, too.
I can't believe I'm having to write this, but today, the UK Government is trying to OUTLAW the RIGHT to peaceful PROTEST.
Here.
In the UK.
In 2021.
This isn't just about the so-called big issues: eg climate change and war. It's about *any* protest: eg library closures.
All credit to her for choosing children over career. Wish my MP -
@vickyford
, the Minister for Children, no less! - had had the courage and conviction to do the same.
Great to hear a Chelmsford resident talking on
@LBC
this morning about the importance of tactical voting to get rid of the Tories. As the Lib Dem candidate for Chelmsford I am obviously biased, but we have a great chance of winning this seat with tactical vote support.
Right. So, it has happened. Boris Johnson is to become the Prime Minister.
Don't just sit there shouting at the telly or crying into your tea. Do something about it.
