If you have a Sikh friend, send them love.
If you have a Sikh employee, check in on them.
If you have a Sikh family member, let them know you’re in their corner.
We’re facing an incredibly difficult and trying time right now, and tbh it’s taking a HUGE toll on a lot of us.
Brown single mothers are QUEENS!!!
I remember once a random uncle scoffed at me when he found out my mom raised us on her own after her divorce, and he venously spat out, “She must be one of those MODERN types.”
I smiled at him, and said, “Yes, yes she absolutely is.”
Kay brown twitter:
Many of us are adults now and it's time we expand our vocabulary away from "kaali daal" and "yellow daal" and learn the proper names of the lentils we use in our cooking.
Here's a thread of all the daals I know (feel free to add any that I may have missed).
It’s annoying that Ontario set their municipal elections on Diwali, knowing that ON has the second largest concentration of South Asians in Canada.
We wouldn’t ever see an Election Day take place on Christmas or Easter, so why is it okay to impose on other major holidays?

Apne lok seriously have no sense of respecting the dignity of the dead. STOP circulating those disturbing photos and videos of Sidhu Moose Wala.
It hasn’t even been an hour since his death has been announced and y’all are already violating his privacy and dignity…
I'm feeling super heartbroken and angry right now and I need to let this out so please forgive me for the long thread. Can we please talk about depression and suicide?
It’s took 4 minutes to repeal the three farm bills…
4 minutes after a year of farmers sitting out in the frigid winter and blistering summer.
4 minutes after days of police brutality.
4 minutes after 687 souls departed.
Part of me is overjoyed, but another part is livid.
[Thread] While many people will celebrate these next two days as Pakistan and India’s days of Independence, Punjabis will mourn Partition, the millions of lives lost and displaced, and the loss of a unified pluralistic Punjab.
Tomorrow’s such a magical day.
It’s
#Vaisakhi
, the first day of Chaitra
#Navratri
, and the first fast of
#Ramadan
.
It’s been an isolating year, so I find it moving that ppl from three of the world’s biggest faiths - Sikhi, Hinduism, and Islam - will spend tomorrow in prayer. ❤️
Everyone, INCLUDING Elizabeth May, is attacking Jagmeet on making the richest of the rich pay their fair share of taxes.

For many of us, the 14th and 15th days of August aren’t a cause for celebration, but rather a painful reminder of the time our motherland was torn in two.
The pain and intergenerational trauma of Partition have had a lasting impact on our psyches. 💔
First thing that came to my mind: If hot sand can instantly bring coffee to a boil like this, imagine what Guru Arjan Dev Ji went through during their shaheedi.
Happy Labour Day!!!
I want to recognize the role the Punjabi community have played in the Labour movement. Here’s a small clip that always fills me with pride - a Bibi Ji uses folk boliyan to rally workers in support of the Canadian Farmworkers Union at her workplace in 1980.
Sikh Rehat Maryada forbids the cutting of one’s hair, yet I don’t see it being used to dehumanize and ostracize sehajdhari Sikhs the way you weaponize it against LGBTQ Sikhs.
No offense, but the way alcohol is creeping it’s way into our wedding sagans and rasams is just plain gross and sad…
Our wedding customs have an ocean of meanings and blessings behind them, but sadly our generation is just turning weddings into a week-long bender.
Sikhs in Punjab never got a break.
Our grandparents’ generation was traumatized by Partition.
Our parents’ generation was traumatized by the Sikh Genocide.
We carry that generational trauma. One of its many manifestations is an addiction epidemic in Punjab and the diaspora.
Translation:
I’m an upper caste & economically privileged person and it pisses me off that students from largely working class Sikh farming families that never got the same economic opportunities my parents are now immigrating to a country where they might become social equals.
The mass invitation of Indian “students” to Canada plays a big role in this country’s destruction. How can I say this as the child of an Indian immigrant? Because there was a fundamental difference between the way that my father got to this country and the students.
Punjabi is such a poetic languages.
When someone congratulates with “Vadhaiyaan,” you don’t say “thank you.”
You’re supposed to say “Savaa Vadhaiyaan” which means “one and a quarter congratulations [back to you].”

We haven't been "fighting Islam for centuries." Sikhs have had a very rich history with Muslims that islamophobes love to gloss over

If you folks could keep my mom in your Ardaas/prayers I would really appreciate if. She’s going through a lot of pain rn from years of working herself down to the bone.
Funny to see how silent the non-Punjabi South Asian culture vultures are rn about farmers in Punjab.
So y’all see our art but not our plight? Cool cool...
In Panjabi, there’s an idiom to describe someone who has become so depraved that they fail to possess any humanity.
We say, “Ohdaa khoon safed ho geaa.”
That translates to, “Their blood has become white.”
That idiom fits Nikki Haley through and through.

Yup. This is how my dad died. Your body gets so toxic that you can’t eat anything or keep it down. You slowly deteriorate and rot inside out.
Alcoholism is far too celebrated in our culture and it needs to end.

Father’s Day is hard for me.
My abusive absentee father died from alcoholism 15 days after he reconciled with me 4 years ago.
I feel thankful to have had that moment, but I feel a deep emptiness too. How do I mourn a man who gave me a lifetime of pain and a last moment of love?
The kohinoor wasn’t stolen from “India.” It was stolen from Punjab’s sovereign Sikh Raaj of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, whose heir was abducted & forcefully converted by Victoria.
Y’all’s thinkpieces about that rock are incomplete if you fail to recognize that we were once sovereign.
We really need to address how much our youth are reliant on alcohol in social settings. It’s like we don’t know how to have a good time if it doesn’t involve inebriation.
We need to stop equating drinking with Punjabi culture, and realize the ways in which we enable alcoholism.
Punjabis are too focused on the wedding and not enough on the actual marriage.
Punjabi Sikhs focus more on the cultural rituals before and after the Laavan. Instead of taking time to understand them, they treat the Anand Karaj as just a ring-around-the-rosy around a giant book.

When you see someone from your community rise to prominence, you’d expect them to represent your people, not fuel their ridicule.
A thread of of a few, among many, Muslims who stood up for Sikhs in the past:
Pir Budhu Shah - sacrificed his sons to help Guru Gobind Singh Ji fight the Mughals, and in return the Mughals murdered his entire family.
The most heartbreaking thing is watching your mother go through health complications and you not being able to do anything about it. Like you just want to snap your fingers and make it all better, but that’s not how it work.
Please pray for my mom, I’d really appreciate it. ❤️
Just found out that a queer Sikh I once knew committed suicide two months ago. Filled with so much sadness and rage rn.
This is why I will NEVER be silent when you idiots showcase your homophobia. His blood is on your hands.
What we’re NOT gonna do is tell that Singh he should have worn his kirpan under his shirt. Instead of asking a Sikh to conceal their faith, ask yourself why your first instinct is to tell someone to be okay with white supremacist notions of respectability?
Condolences to all Punjabi Sikhs on the 75th anniversary of the partition of our motherland.
Many of us will find no reason to celebrate these next two days as our people became oppressed minorities on both sides of Britain’s manmade border.
Independence for whom?
I want to fall in love with life again. I want to feel excited when I wake up again, and not wish that I hadn’t woken up.
I want to feel less perpetually exhausted.

“Sikh women shouldn’t be wearing modern clothing” said the man dressed in the most authentic puraatan Khalsa bana of… denim jeans, a poly-cotton blend hoodie, and a synthetic camouflage puffer vest.
My last night's tweet had mixed reviews about Sikh women with dastaar wearing modern clothing.
No one forces dastaar. It's a personal choice and should adhere to strict religious beliefs.
I can not reply to all, so heres a video.
My heart hurts for my motherland of five rivers. A land once free, stripped by years of colonialism, genocide, and discrimination to a mere shadow of its former glory.
My heart hurts for Punjabi farmers who raise harvests like children, to feed a nation.
I love how poetic Punjabi is. When you congratulate someone, you say “Vadhaiyaan” - which means “may your happiness be increased.” The response isn’t “thank you,” it’s “Savaa Vadhaiyaan.” Savaa is the number 1.5, so in essence the response means, “May your’s be increased more.”
White friends: I PROMISE you, we don’t want to hear about how kind you think Sikhs are, & we don’t really want to hear about your friendship with your one Sikh coworker.
What we want to hear from you is how you plan to be a co-conspirator to dismantle white supremacist violence.
It's Sikh Punjabi wedding season here in the diaspora, and many of us will be going to several Anand Karajs this year. However, I have noticed a few things during the actual Anand Karaj that concern me that I want to address in this thread.
“Guide Sikhs”.... LOL
Newsflash: You can wish someone well/send blessings on them without wishing them to convert to your faith, or implying that they’re wayward in their current belief. 🙄

As folks can tell from my display picture I’m one of the Sikhs that wears my turban a bit differently. In recent days out turban has been getting a lot of racist backlash so I though I would contribute to

Also there is no “god” by the name of “Baba Singh” in Sikhi.
Can these new-agers leave my faith alone?
My Sikhi is not your aesthetic.
If any Sikh in the diaspora is silent about what’s happening to Muslims right now in Delhi, they have no right to join “never again” demonstrations at Sikh Genocide memorials in November. We are literally watching history repeat itself.

Honestly, I don’t blame Sikh youth who leave their Sikhi. Like y’all can be stupidly judgmental, petty, and hateful sometimes.
Let’s be real, people don’t “drift away” from Sikhi, they’re pushed away.
Keep up the Panthic policing. Good job making our community a toxic space. 👏🏽
When news of sexual predators in the community comes out, I can testify from personal experience as a survivor, it can be triggering to the core.
To those who are also survivors, I’m sorry. I love you, I see you, and I need you to take care and be gentle with yourself today. ❤️

One thing I wish brown youth would acknowledge is the privilege that living in a household with two working parents brings.
Like it’s easy to talk about “hustle” & going after your passions when you’re not supporting a single parent & the mortgage isn’t dependant on your income.
“I’m NoT hOmOpHoBiC, iT’s My ReLiGiOuS BeLiEf.”
No you’re homophobic, and if your religious beliefs teach you to discriminate and dehumanize an entire group of people, you need to re-evaluate your beliefs.
I am sick. and. tired of how Trudeau does a photo op at a protest with no actual work to dismantle racism and gets accolades, but Jagmeet gets kicked out of the HoC for actually confronting racism. Are you tired too? Sign the petition.

The Partition of Punjab may have hurt others, but it hurt Sikhs the most.
Hindus and Muslims had the privilege of collective healing, but our people have faced constant hardship on both sides of the border ever since.
As someone who lost their estranged father to alcoholism, this weekend is always tough.
However, what makes it worse is seeing how alcohol-oriented Fathers Day ads and greeting cards are.
Like thanks for glorifying addiction, and triggering the PTSD associated with it. Lol.
This is beyond infuriating. Our ppl are literally bullied, harassed, & KILLED for wearing the dastaar. It has centuries of significance and a history full of sacrifice and devotion behind it.

It also assumes that your assailant cares whether or not you’re Muslim. The basis of Islamophobia is and always has been white supremacy targeted at brown bodies.
