Part of what makes Rome so good is its fascinating relationship to historical accuracy where like not a lot of the costuming or even the specific story is accurate but it is absolutely nails something incredibly true about Ancient Rome that a lot of other media fails to cover

If the tv show Rome aired today, historical costume enthusiasts would be going off about the amount of tailoring in these pieces. Cutting and sewing and darting all over the place when that would not be the case in Ancient Rome.

Fire and Blood is so vague and the characters are shallow, it invites the construction of these elaborate headcanons, but you can't fit the much richer show characters into these headcanons, so you end up just denying what you see on screen or melting down bc it's "wrong"

Rhaenyra being Queen means Alicent's days as Queen Alicent could actually be over, that's not the case for Aegon, where she will be forced into his court as Queen Mother. There's no liberation for her.

In the first two episodes, every time Otto told Alicent to go to the King and say something, she didn't. In this episode, Otto tells her to make an issue of Aegon's succession with Viserys and she goes to talk to him...about ways to strengthen Rhaenyra's position

But I also think that when Alicent speaks to Rhaenyra again, without the layered hostility of episodes 6 and 7, honestly and straightforwardly, gently and tenderly, Alicent feels like she's her old self again and embraces the concept of Rhaenyra as Queen in her own way

I also think that you can't ignore in episode 8 that it is revealed to her that Aegon, always well, lecherous, is an actual rapist- this she reacts to with obvious disgust and its a disgust that is going to color how she feels politically going into Viserys's death

But unfortunately, Viserys dies right then, and Alicent- treated as soft to the enemy by Otto and the Green conspiracies- was left out of the plot. The prophecy Viserys gives her doesn't really matter in it of itself, Otto calls it a useful tool and that's all it is.

It gives Alicent one final act of duty to perform for Viserys, one last torment from her tormenter, one last act as Queen Alicent, and she tries it her own way and it's a way to keep her on board with this new regime that she really does fundamentally dislike.
