A story in two charts. There is a prison overcrowding crisis, and perhaps we should be rid of society's carceral impulse. Yet, throwing vulnerable former inmates into shit low-paid jobs is no solution either. Me, on marrying socialism and abolition:

Mick Lynch over these past 48 hours has reminded me so much of the way Corbyn et al. made the running during the 2017 election campaign. Except where Corbyn et al. sought to construct the class politically, Lynch defends his striking workers by speaking to the class as... 1/2

Worth noting that last year's protests in solidarity with Palestine were bigger than The Queue for the Queen's funeral. Sometimes when you dig down deep into this society's most proletarian of furrows, you realise that this 'rainy fascist island' ain't quite as wet as is claimed.

One can only be deeply moved by the huge amount of bravery it takes for the family of Chris Kaba to be leading a protest, demanding justice for their murdered kin, on the same weekend as the Queen's funeral. If there is a force in society truly for justice & freedom, it's there.

On his own terms, appointing Timpson as prison minister may be a deft move by Starmer - but not one I think abolitionists should endorse. Timpson speaks of prisoners in a humane and reforming fashion but underlying this is a dark vision. 1/5

Watch this it’s fascinating - I asked James Timpson what he’d do about prisons and sentencing if he was in charge. He believes only a third of prisoners in jail should definitely be there. He’s now in charge of prisons (but not sentencing).

It does reflect badly on the trade unions that the Labour Party has commandeered the demand for a 4 day working week into a proposal for a 10 “compressed hours” working day. If you vacate the terrain of social freedom, it will be rejigged for business-friendly productivist ends.

We live in a society where a policeman can kill a woman, and the institution to which he belongs, the one that trained him and approved him for duty, can then seek out the threat of law, arrest and penalty to stop women and their allies protesting and holding vigils.

Never let your Labour MP tell you they had anything to do with today’s protests. Mass mobilisations against fascism happened in spite of Labourism. The protests were a rebuttal to the idea that we can repress fascism through the state, just as they were a rebuke to Labour racism.

This isn’t to say extremely violent and oppressive prisons is an answer either. But abolitionists and socialists shouldn’t cheer on the conversion of warehoused surplus populations into pliant labourers as a good thing because the capitalist in charge of it says nice things. 4/5

Beyond the betwixmas farce over a Verso ad, 'abolish' has become a bit of a red herring for lots of the Left. Any language of 'abolition' (against police, family, etc.) becomes negatively constructed as an obstacle which will just scare 'real workers' away from socialism. 1/9

Solidarity with everyone in Bristol breaking into police stations and smashing up police vans. This is what defying the #PoliceCrackdownBill looks like and we should never apologise for sticking it to an institution so committed to the domination of the majority.

From Black Lives Matter and Extinction Rebellion to tonight's protest, we're entering a new moment of state authoritarianism. Nothing is inevitable though. If, as a movement, we decide to organise against this offensive, defy the law & mobilise in the streets, we can repel them.

The Colston 4 getting a not guilty verdict is absolute vindication for militancy in the face of racism, injustice and the legacies of imperialism. All power to them! ✊🏻

I'm not sure it is possible to read this phenomenal piece of work with anything other than an intense anger for empire and capital. It makes you want to tear the whole system down.

Given the fact that she was the gold commander in the control room during the operation which murdered Jean Charles de Menezes, it would give me an enormous amount of pleasure to see Cressida Dick forced to resign. But this isn't enough for our moment, surely?

Agree with interventions by @leninology & @meadwaj on the Left's inability to adjust to this new bio-securitarian conjuncture. A big problem is that the failure to carve out an independent position from varying wings of capital & state has long been an issue which has plagued us.

Against the idea that we can simply 'abolish' things, but in favour of the notion that we need 'a real movement' - socially & politically powerful - that can transcend & abolish 'the present state of things'. For that comrades, we need organisation. 9/9

This will have to come from an alliance of the streets, campaigns, trade unions and the socialist left. The pandemic will be with us for the long haul & given it forms such a critical part of the pretext for this government's authoritarian crackdown, we have to tackle it head-on.

My hope for 2022 is that we, the radical Left, get better organised. I hope we get better at communicating with one another, but most importantly, I hope we get better at talking to & building relationships within the working-class. That's my priority anyway. Avanti comrades! 🍻

We know for example, from the experience of the Black Lives Matter uprisings last year as well as scientific research, that socially-distanced, masked and covid-secure protests don't lead to outbreaks.

After 5+ years of so many in Britain abandoning the Palestinian people & putting all sorts of disrespect on their name, it comes as no surprise that it is *them* showing *us* how to fight again. One way we can respond in kind is to make sure their intifada spreads here!

It's not just revolting, it is exactly what we should expect from the British state and it's henchmen in the force. Solidarity to everyone defying the law and mobilising this weekend: we want justice for Sarah Everard and an end to this horrid institution & it's emergency powers.

We need mass civil disobedience outside every Israeli embassy in the world. Take your cue from the united Palestinian people and throw everything we can against the horrors of this murderous, colonial state.

It's worth noting that this sort of stuff was trialled against the anti-racist left in the 2010s, particularly against young Muslim socialists inspired into political action by both Malia Bouattia's NUS leadership and Jeremy Corbyn's reign as Labour leader.

@EagletonOliver @novaramedia Great piece Ollie. Honestly find the responses to your argument utterly depressing. The question you pose, of whether we want an anti-war movement that can try to halt the inter-imperialist lurch into evermore catastrophe or not, is bang on & it's important to pose it so starkly.

We also know, despite record levels of state spending, that when it comes to the racialised & gendered organisation of the economy, the privatisation of public space & the inadequacy of state support, that the Tories have presided over social murder on an unprecedented scale.

7 years ago today, I joined a protest outside Yarls Wood immigration removal centre. It was a deeply moving day then, & it is even more poignant now. Any socialist movement worth its salt wants the border gone, the detention centres closed & every migrant given the right to life.

This is an old but great essay by @alexgourevitch & @CoreyRobin on the centrality of freedom to a revived socialist project. There's much to add but the core claim that freedom should be the central mantra which ties all else together is, I think, crucial.

Woke up thinking about those beautiful scenes of anti-racist solidarity in Glasgow yesterday, and wondering how fucking powerful it would be if we emulated that for Palestine all over the country and across the world. This weekend is the time to try!

Strikes can be popular, they can shift consciousness and they can win. Gotta' give a massive salute to Mick Lynch and the RMT for injecting a long needed class politics into this deeply oppressive society.
