I have students in tears. I feel like crying. They are receiving lower than expected marks - no feedback just the marks. This is not acceptable
@UWEBristol

My University has announced 100 voluntary redundancies today. They’ve also issued a section 188 notice for compulsory redundancies in due course. Nightmare situation. The uncertainty for us, as staff, and our students is unbearable.
@ucu
Today my employer announced they want 100 voluntary redundancies. Already overworked underpaid staff are offered 1.5 wks pay per yr of employment. VC on about. £370k and recent restructuring has increased £100k+ management notably. Bad decisions for years. Govt. In miniature 🤬
It represents no substantive improvement on the original pay offer, so our the Higher Education Service Group Executive have decided not to waste members time with another consultation, and move directly to a strike ballot. We will be recommending that you vote yes for action.
If vice chancellors cared for their students, as they say they do, they would care for their staff. Over the last few weeks they have shown they care for neither.
Tomorrow I will return to teaching with a heavy heart. Never have I started a term feeling so demoralised and deflated. I best try and find some enthusiasm
@ucu
Had an email this morning inviting me to breakfast to thank me for giving up my Saturday to help run an Open Day. By 5pm the email had been recalled. Turns out it’s only managers who are being thanked! My mistake. How to make staff feel valued!?!
#ucu
I agree. I now know of 3 non members/friends who have marked on my behalf (badly I might add). They are senior members of staff - they should be thinking of others
As a

marking and assessment boycott. Stop de-valuing students hard work. Call for negotiations
Graduation is not what matters. It’s the quality of the degree. This is entirely based on high quality marking and feedback. This should be done by people who know what they’re talking about.

Not by putting people on precarious contracts. Not by paying your female staff less. Not by paying staff from ethnic minority backgrounds less. Not by squeezing every last penny out of students. Not by giving staff no time to prepare material.
This is a travesty. The arts and humanities are quickly becoming restricted to elite universities. This is a major step back for inclusivity and widening participation
Terrible news from the University of Kent: "we have taken the decision to phase out Anthropology, Art History, Health & Social Care, Journalism, Music & Audio Technology, and Philosophy/Religious Studies"
Ok, so UCEA is insulting us and has decided to continue the war it has declared upon
@ucu
. Either we call off the MAB and accept that the union is thrown into irrelevance for the coming years if not decades, or we respond by RE-BALLOTING NOW!
Interesting conference paper from Charlotte Selleck of

We are going to deliver the biggest picket lines ever seen in higher education.
And we need every single one of you to play your part.

UK Universities have forgotten what makes a University - it’s the students and the academics who teach them. Not VC’s, management and buildings!
@UniversitiesUK
@ucu
What do you think, do people come to
@GoldsmithsUoL
for the carpets? The management team? Or the programmes & academics who teach them? So if we have to sacrifice one, which one should we pick? 🤔
#NotADoneDeal
Queen Mary UCU is compiling a list of Universities who are making people redundant - useful for students when picking courses and useful for staff who may be looking for work .

One by one, we'll see universities admitting that they've been unable to mitigate the impacts of the MAB. Stay strong, and watch the slow burn unfold. It's certainly coming at

My students are getting their marks back. Someone

has been marking their work. The marks are low and the feedback almost non-existent. I’m so sad for them. They deserve better.

A tragic story and a reminder that happiness, health and quality time with friends and family is all that matters...not publications, impact factors or student satisfaction.
Someone explain something to me. When you strike you lose a day of pay. You never do the work you would have done that day. In the MAB, I had my pay reduced. Why should I then do the work without receiving the pay?
@ucu
BREAKING: we have found out that the University of Manchester is planning to offer a £500 voucher and a letter to future employers to any student who is unable to graduate due to the UCU's marking an assessment boycott
The UCU Higher Education Committee has agreed:
⁃Further strike action before the end of September
⁃A national reballot
⁃The MAB continues
This sends a strong and united message to UCEA - negotiate or the dispute goes on.
#ucuRISING
This is beyond the pale.
@UWEBristol
are offering casual, zero hour contracts to mark the assignments of staff involved in the MAB.
Instead of attacking your own staff and offering these disgraceful contracts, call on

to re-negotiate!

I’ve had several chats with members at my branch and most are disappointed with the ‘offer’ and frustrated by the way things have been done
Only 2% of graduating students affected by the MAB, UCEA? Here in Durham, only 1/3 or so of final-year students have all marks.
Our resident statistician has promised that if you release your working on this, it's one assignment he *will* mark.

Today our Vice-Chancellor misleadingly wrote “a group of pro-Palestinian protestors have set up a camp on Main Building’s Horseshoe Drive.”
The Vice-Chancellor should acknowledge that the solidarity camp is formed of undergrad and postgrad members of our University community.

I don’t think anyone is saying striking is a holiday. This comment shows a complete disregard for those with childcare responsibilities (to name just one). I won’t be able to book wrap around care now and I have a 1.5 hour commute for a 9am lecture.
I won’t want to lose 18 days pay but I equally don’t want my colleagues on precarious contracts. I don’t want the quality of education to suffer because of excessive work loads and I don’t want to see colleagues quitting the sector because they can’t afford to stay
