Late last night, trail cameras at Longwood captured images of the escaped convict. The images were shared with PA State Police immediately after the footage was viewed. Police are actively searching the property. We will continue to work with authorities as the search continues.
We wish to express our deepest gratitude to law enforcement, authorities & government officials for their tireless work in apprehending Danelo Cavalcante. We are grateful for the peaceful conclusion and thank all those involved in the search for their unwavering dedication.
We are excited to share that Longwood is acquiring Granogue, a 505-acre estate on one of the last areas of unprotected open space in the Brandywine River Corridor.
“We are thrilled to conserve the historic landscape.”

The blue-poppies are here! Nearly impossible to grow in the mid-Atlantic, we went to great lengths—and low temps—to get hundreds of rare Meconopsis 'Lingholm’ to bloom for our display, on view thru the end of March.

The warm weather inspired the Japanese wisteria climbing along the facade of our Peirce-du Pont House to burst into bloom, while our

Garden is not far behind. Weather permitting, we anticipate peak wisteria bloom to hit next week.
Blue-poppy season has begun! Our rare 💙Himalayan blue-poppies💙 are a spectacle not to be missed. These blue-tiful blooms last only around two weeks and should be on view through the end of the month.
Our horticulturists have grown hundreds of blue-hued blossoms to adorn our Main Conservatory for our Winter Blues Festival, bringing together plants that are native to every corner of the globe

Due to ongoing law enforcement activity and for the safety of our Guests and staff members, the Gardens will remain closed on Wednesday, September 6. We appreciate your patience and thank you for your support as we continue to work with law enforcement.
Watching the wildlife go nuts on our Wildlife Tree is really making us all smile. Who knew a Christmas tree could be so full of drama and action? We restock the dried fruits and seeds every morning to make sure everyone remains full of the Christmas spirit!
Our Acacia Passage is definitely a vibe this year. More than 2,000 ornaments create a shimmering sea of color dangling overhead. Have you had a chance to take in the spectacle?
We won! For the fifth year in a row, YOU, or wonderful fans, helped us win

Christmas Lights Contest! You light up our Gardens every day. To show our thanks, we’re taking you on a video tour of our award-winning light display.
Did you know, the color blue is so rare in nature, biologists have estimated that fewer than 10% of flowering plants have blue flowers? Learn more on the blog:

Our Gardens have been putting on a pretty spectacular display of fall color this October, from vermilion maples to butter yellow pawpaws. But have you seen our cotton candy pink Muhlenbergia capillaris? The colors of fall are certainly spanning the whole spectrum!
Our Thousand Bloom Chrysanthemum has arrived in our Conservatory! It’s taken 17 months & 2,000 staff hours to train this single plant into a perfect blooming dome. Our growers are busy putting the final touches on this highlight of our Chrysanthemum Festival that kicks off 10/22!
And suddenly you realize that the bramble you’ve been looking at all winter is actually a happy, yellow forsythia bush waiting for the perfect moment to let you know that spring is here! Anyone else a forsythia fan?

Well, we had moments of suspense, excitement, and growth. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of this experience sharing my stinky bloom with all of you. I really grew from this experience. The time has come for me to take my leave as my spadix has flopped!

The flower stalk of our Agave americana is now more than 25’ tall and is expected to flower in late June or July. Once thought to bloom every 100 years, century-plants actually bloom every 10-25 years, but our 💚 for this plant is still through the roof!
The blue-poppy is one of countless gifts of horticulture from Asia that make our Gardens what they are. Meconopsis are native to the Himalayas and require a lot of care especially in the hot summers and unpredictable winters of Pennsylvania. On view through the 1st week in April!
Our Exhibition Hall often provides one of the biggest “wow” moments of our Christmas display, bringing together all the elements of the theme, which this year celebrates 🌹botanical splendor🌹.
Cascading wisteria flowers are transforming our Gardens into a heavenly purple and white dreamscape. And the scent is just as divine, especially when it’s carried by a fresh spring breeze.

The winds have redecorated our Gardens a bit, but the fall color is holding on in spots throughout the Gardens. It’s a great time to get out there and enjoy that crisp fall air!
We’re growing! On 3/1 we will begin our most ambitious expansion & preservation project in a century:

A big thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate Chrysanthemum Festival with us this year! As we wrap up for 2020, our growers have already begun working on next year’s mums, which we hope will be met with as much fanfare as this year’s display!
Meet my caretaker Joyce. She’s been taking care of me since I came here from

2 years ago. When I was just a giant leaf, she put a FRAGILE label on my pot. What can I say, I have discerning taste in substrate. And temperature. And humidity. And sun!

And that’s a wrap! We hope our fire and ice display brought you the full spectrum of Christmas beauty this season. We are so grateful for everyone who shared their holiday with us. It wouldn’t be A Longwood Christmas without you!
