I play a grotesquely exaggerated caricature of myself on here because this platform has pretty bad incentives. In real life, I'd definitely help you change a tire, lend you some tools or tutor your kids in math-no matter how profoundly we disagree on political minutiae.
When I was a naive young man and I heard that one of my older cousins was doing gender studies in college, I thought "wow, that sounds cool. I bet it brings together evolutionary theory, endocrinology, philosophy, history, archaeology, comparative anatomy, etc.." Nope....
When you get hired as a physics professor as part of the insanely heavy handed push to bring gender parity to STEM disciplines, but it turns out you lack the ability to do actual physics, you play the only hand available to you at that point.
I'm a PhD student in computer science at Northwestern University who is currently on leave and in the process of withdrawing because I found the academy to be far too saturated with midwit illiberal activist twits such as yourself to continue a career in it.
@aesthdistance1
My friend (Filipino) would get tan in the summer, and her mother (half-Chinese and v. light) would tell her she looked like a "chimay," which apparently meant servant. It was more about class: People were darker if they spent more time outside working.
I might be a psychopath.
I was at the grocery store and I saw this lanky brown kid in a keffiyeh with the most effete sociology grad student voice you've ever heard. As he was walking down the aisle, he turned to his friend and was like "Oh my god, Ritz crackers are the most
@Nature
The loss in credibility is well deserved, given how so many once respectable publications have allowed themselves to be captured by activist editorial staff.
@FreeBlckThought
This is maybe something that would be acceptable for a really high fifteen year old to say while sitting on the curb in front of a convenience store looking at the 41 cents in his hand.

Often times when you train a model and try to explicitly prevent it from considering certain variables it will just find implicit proxies for that variable. Now maybe the AHA will predict heart attacks based on the last time smoke detector batteries were changed.
@bizarre_names
They even invented the term "demisexual," which means people who prefer only to have sex with someone with whom they have emotional intimacy, as if such a thing were out of the ordinary for women.
I have a new report out at
@CSPICenterOrg
called "Increasing Politicization and Homogeneity in Scientific Funding: An Analysis of NSF Grants, 1990-2020." A thread of the most important findings.
@AlanRMacLeod
When you give non-white non-western people no sense of their own agency to fuck up their own situation that is also a form of white supremacy.
@MrLovenstein
I used be like this. I still don't have children, but I realized "the sky is falling!!" was just a big rationalization to not commit to anything so I could just keeping living a life of terminal-adolescent self-absorption.
This is an actual illustration from the January 2022 issue of Physics Today.. Is it crazy to think that the purpose of physics as a discipline is to learn about how nature works and not to attain representational parity among people doing a vastly inferior form of the science?
If I get a DNA test and I find out that I have a larger than average amount of Neanderthal DNA will I be able to use that to my advantage in the academic job market? Who has ever gotten genocided and had their land stolen harder than the Neanderthals did?
@CaitlinPacific
How popular would you say it is though? I think still probably a fairly small minority, and probably mostly over-credential upper middle class type people.
@timheidecker
@MattWalshBlog
Yes, this is all very healthy for a civilization. Civilizations always flourish once they become excessively hedonistic and narcissistically obsessed with niche sexual identities. This is the most important thing we can teach our children.
@RichardHanania
As a fairly sexually harassy white guy, I can confirm that this is in fact true. I mostly rely on latent colonialism to hit on women for me.
@RichardHanania
This happened at Northwestern in 2018 and a school-wide email went out about trauma and police involvement. It turned out to be a piece of yarn that an art student accidentally left on a table.
This turned out to be the exact kind of bait I expected. People who read Lacan and think it's serious, tankies and bay area tech kids with Palestinian flags in their bios are trying to drag me now. We just need to get the autism spectrum troons in here and it'll be a real party.
@SenLouiseLucas
@GovernorVA
Wow, really digging deep here for something to be aggrieved about. He also said entrepreneurship. I guess this is what happens when careers are made on grotesquely exaggerated performative grievance.
@RichardHanania
Has thinking "these people have cultural practices that are incompatible with our norms that will be pretty difficult to relieve them of," pretty much been rolled into the racism bucket at this point?
In NSF grant abstracts, we see a large and consistent increase in terms related to identity politics over the last three decades. As of 2020, 30.4% of all grants had one of seven politicized terms (underrepresented, disparity, etc.) listed below, up from 2.9% in 1990.

Homogeneous groups of 95%+ Japanese males used to make really really excellent video games and managers probably employed forms of corporal punishment to ensure deadlines were met.
I was on IRC in the 90s and you could say whatever you wanted about anything and it was fine. It's not like relaxing speech codes on the internet is taking us into some uncharted territory where we've never been before.

Would a movement to pull federal funding away from schools of education and to stop subsidizing teachers getting master's degrees (from those very schools of education) that don't really enhance their ability to teach but mostly just serve to indoctrinate them offend you?
@LaikenJordahl
People who have never seen concertina wire on the parking garage of an upscale condo building in the downtown area of a democratic city.
Getting dragged on the internet aside, I think there is a meaningful critique to be be made of international students who come from the upper-crust of their own society that come here and socket into our unhealthy (and very low-resolution) fetishization of the marginalized other
I can't really get behind populism. Our elites are pretty crappy, but regular people aren't very good either. I don't really buy the whole "it's impossible to make a middle-class living" thing. People have just grown far too entitled for their own good.
@gelliottmorris
Ahh.. political science... the most rigorous of human endeavors.. there's definitely no way to massage survey data to make it confirm your priors..
@IonaItalia
This is the academy these days, if people don't like your ideas, they don't confront them directly anymore, they just use hyperbole behind your back to try and smear your reputation.
@mbkasg
I feel the same way. I'm interesting in things aimed toward answering the questions sociology claims to be interested in-but just not totally tainted by ideology and anti-empirical priors.
@IdahoBones
I just looked at your profile. You retweeted something suggesting people should be able to murder Sam Altman. Why can't I fantasize about feeding roaches to spoiled Brahmin kids larping as social justice activists?
I was one of those unfortunate people who, 15 years ago, thought that less people going to church and more people going to college would lead to a saner society...
Politicization hurts science when it creates ideological litmus tests, as it judges the worthiness of projects based on anything other than their scientific merit. It can also decrease the credibility of science among the general public, as has happened with public health.
@arthurianmaiden
@RichardDawkins
Did you? You clearly missed most of his points if you have fallen for all of this quasi-religious anti-scientific gender ideology.
Critical Race Theory isn't being taught in schools, that's just right-wing misinformation. Ohh also, we're having one of the main critical race theory ladies give the keynote address at the biggest education research conference in the world.
@RVAwonk
It's an emerging discipline that brings together affirmative action hacks who can't do the actual work in their fields so instead do thinly veiled activism and call it science.
@paulg
There are definitely confounding factors here that make it a not so straight forward one-to-one correlation. Catalytic converters, scrubbers, clean-air act, improvements in cancer treatment, etc. If cigarette sales go to zero lung cancer deaths will certainly not follow that low.
@AdamRutherford
So many academic geneticists seem to have their jobs based on an ability to perform elaborate mental gymnastics and play specious word games in the service of a sort of neo-lysenkoism.
So why have so many sexual taboos been so thoroughly dissolved by modernity when the cousin incest taboo is as strong or stronger than it was 100 years ago? Are there not any weirdo tech founders with tons of money to throw into pro-incest non-profits?
This is true of all fields. As of 2020, the most politicized field was Education & Human Resources at 53.8%, up from 4.3% in 1990. Yet even the hard sciences have seen the same trends. Mathematical & Physical Sciences has gone from 0.9% to 22.6%, and Engineering, 1.6% to 25.4%.
There is a letter going around calling for the head of the editor of a European psychology journal that looks mostly like woke histrionics to me.
I ran a script that identifies the likely gender of signatories based on first name:

What about also hating the class of entrenched civil servants who would capture a lot of the money generated by increasing the taxes of private sector elites?

Tyler Cowen, Patrick Collison, Peter Thiel, and others have discussed stagnation in scientific innovation. This report highlights two problems in NSF funding that might be infecting other areas of science: politicization and the contraction in what kind of ideas are acceptable.

Hey Claire, carrots are good for you! You better eat these carrots or we're going to send you to a place until you agree to eat the carrots. If you don't eat the carrots you will eventually be adding undue burden on our healthcare system which will harm your fellow citizens.

All of our universities no long have alchemy programs because at some point we collectively determined that alchemy was not a serious pursuit, unfortunately modern universities are rife with things far less serious things that alchemy these days.
