In language learning, I always prefer to move on to the next lesson even if I don't fully understand the one I'm on. Never knew why. Manfred Spitzer (Lernen) explains why. The brain likes new things.

@markmackinnon On the subject of colonialism, how did Muscovy expand to Siberia, the Pacific ocean, the Caucasus, central Asia etc.? Was it by spontaneous referenda by the local inhabitants?

The joy of having a handful of partly learned languages; they are always there waiting for you, ready to start up again, friends you can go back to. The pleasure of saying a few words or a sentence in that language to surprise a native speaker is just a sweet bonus.

@JoeBiden I find the overblown chest thumping from Americans tiring. "The future is ours" "We can achieve whatever we set our minds to" "We're the greatest" .There's no competition for the 21st century, just 7.8 billion people, hopefully looking for ways to live better together.

I've learned 20 languages to varying degrees. I'm often asked how I maintain them. Answer- half I don't need to, they're always there. The other half fade so much I can't use them. But when I need them I go back & get them. They're quickly revived, stronger than before..

@aaronhoyland The first 2 statements are true. The 3rd is more questionable since all news outlets have an ideological prejudice. The 4th is not true since some employers & universities have "diversity" policies which deliberately favour minorities, to the disadvantage of white people .

Learning a language, we seem to never remember things we think we should remember. But we can't force ourselves to remember. We just need to keep going & trust that many of these things, although not all, will eventually stick in our brains, with enough exposure.

@ChristopherJM Better idea. -UN supervised independence referendum in Chechnya. Exiled Chechens can vote. Repeat elsewhere in Caucasus. - territories annexed by Russian 1858/1860 unequal treaties revert to China. -Russia required to maintain essential supplies. -Russia gives up nukes.

In every language I have learned or tried to learn, the interest level of the content I was learning from was far more important than the difficulty level, & the most important factor keeping me engaged with the language.

@WillMcAvoyACN Denmark is quite a bit colder than Texas & produces almost half its power from wind turbines. Looks like Texas might consider winterizing its energy system, wind and gas, in case this kind of thing happens again, or maybe it's not worth the cost. I don't know.

I can no longer really speak half the languages I've learned, so why learn new ones? The pleasure of new discoveries, the memory of what was learned & the feeling I can always go back & refresh them & rediscover them. "Mais où sont les neiges d'antan ?"

Many in GOP have childish fixation on Russia as a white Christian fortress altho Russia is 15% Muslim & mostly agnostic.

@lionelbarber @courtney_ft I'm not sure what liberalism means. I have a good idea what cronyism, kleptocracy, corruption, authoritarianism and nepotism mean. Putin and Trump think a liberal world order will be replaced by a system based on these latter attributes. I doubt it.

@JuliaDavisNews He says all Ukrainians speak Russian w/ each other. a) Not true although many do. b) contradicts genocide of Russian speakers BS line & c) is irrelevant. The most fervent Irish nationalists all spoke English. Russians don't get it. Not up to them to decide who is Ukrainian.
