Feels Like Home is a place for me to share my writings about things I love & the people and moments that have shaped me. Through personal essays and weekly content recommendations, I hope whatever I write meets you where you are. That it feels like home.
STORY TIME 📚
As part of my job, I send ice cream to people lots of people know.
When doing some work last weekend, I started seeing people say we should send ice cream to
@briamgilbert
.
After I watch The Bear, the most mundane tasks make me feel like I’m on the show. Washing out my cereal bowl becomes the most intense thing. BPM increasing. Heart rate rising. Unwavering focus. All while cussing under my breath. Perfection is attainable.
.
@briamgilbert
remembered me and we both dug up old photos from elementary school. Honestly still freaking out because it truly was the crossover we didn’t know we needed. Ended up getting Brian his ice cream too.
I didn’t think much of it until I looked at
@briamgilbert
’s IG story and saw it was FREAKING BRIAN GILBERT. My actual really good elementary school friend.
We literally used to run around the playground during recess and perform songs we made up.
I immediately DM’d him.
“To grow up in America is for racist ideas to be constantly rained on your head, and you have no umbrella, and you don’t even know that you’re wet with those racist ideas, because the racist ideas themselves cause you to imagine that you’re dry.” -

“When the streets calm and people suggest once again that we hire more black police officers or create more civilian review boards, I hope that we remember all the times those efforts have failed.” -

I wrote a few words about the privilege of innocence she’s granted and how “the girl next door” label is something she helped create for herself as much as it was placed on her
I’m not someone who particularly *enjoys* marketing advice, but here’s some: read more than just marketing/business books. The human experience is vast and its stories are told across a variety of genres—and by different authors.
Just a reminder that Biden winning this election isn’t the changing of the guard you think it is. We’re still fighting for our lives and in need of a new world where prison, poverty, or punishment isn’t an everyday possibility for marginalized people.

I’m choosing to believe
@Adweek
gave me this for my slightly kept hair and different variations of hoodie-sweats-slippers during quarantine.
Special shoutout to my team at
@jenisicecreams
for making so much of what we share online possible.
Kleenex donations are welcome 🥺
I can’t help but laugh every year at the
#MLKDay
quotes. So you’re telling me Martin Luther King Jr., who was assassinated by the same FBI that murdered Fred Hampton and still has Assata Shakur on their Most Wanted list, wouldn’t still be an enemy of the state today?
Hi sooooo… 👉🏽👈🏽
We’re hiring for a REMOTE social media specialist at Gilly Hicks. My team is full of creative + strategic-minded people who cheer each other on and make sure we can actually rest (like fully turn off our phones). Which we all know is rare to come by in social 🥲
I love Elizabeth, in the sense that I choose Elizabeth—she’s the one who gets my extra grace—which is why we drove all the way to Yellow Springs yesterday and I proposed to her in a field of sunflowers.
She said yes.
While y’all are here, consider supporting
@mass_ohio
if you can. Every Wednesday, they’re at Portal Park in Columbus, OH, supporting the community with free food and harm reduction supplies. Because every life is valuable, no one is disposable.

flipped that idea on its head. She encouraged us not to “go to the holy text looking for ammunition with which to win an argument” but to “go looking for a blessing, a better way of engaging life and the world.”

There was a time when I thought Shaun King was a credible source.
But over time, I learned about his mismanagement of funds and lack of transparency and accountability.
I no longer follow, repost, or give money to Shaun King. It’s okay to correct course as you learn more.
For my groomsmen invites, I gave each of my guys an album that reminded me of them. The morning of the wedding, I gave them bracelets that spelled out a song on the album they were given. It’s so fun looking back at photos from the day and seeing the guys in their bracelets.
I’ve been thinking a lot about this. I joke about Bieber using MLK’s words on his album, but celebrities and brands sprinkle the optics of social justice like parsley only to settle for empty gestures that don’t require they give up their wealth or power in any significant way.
