π over the weekend, i had the sudden urge to make a new portfolio! i had so much fun prototyping the hover state & i'm feeling nostalgic after browsing folders of screenshots from previous roles.
p.s. don't worry, the old one is still up because i still love the design!
β¨ we created a skills map to assess for
@figmadesign
proficiency! there are plenty of ways and orders that you can learn these skills, but this is our first pass at it. we hope to use this to develop better training for our students!
πΒ a few weeks ago, i left primer to pursue my dream of building an alternative design school! iβll be launching soon with an online course called β¨ The art of visual design β¨.

i've been experimenting with the new
@figma
variables feature by creating a jeopardy game and it's pretty cool! all the jeopardy questions and answers are set through variables π±
β¨ we recently hired a product design intern at
@withprimer
after reviewing ~400 applicants for the role! i want to share insights from our hiring process and advice to emerging designers.
we are looking for a product design intern at
@withprimer
β¨! you'll get to work closely with me and the rest of the team. let me know if you have any questions π
π
i'm starting a blog called π design is a party π to share my thoughts on teaching & learning design. the first post is about creating learning communities!
β¨ today's my last day at lambda school, and it's so bittersweet. i'm thankful for the opportunity to teach and mentor students from such a diverse set of backgrounds. the program pushed me to experiment with collaborative online design education, and i've learned so much!
β¨π we published a free collection of our
@LambdaSchool
design resources & content! check out our interview & portfolio guides, design checklists, and visual design tips & tricks.
β¨ created a
@figma
template for the barbie movie poster! it's not exact, but about as close as i could get without opening photoshop & being too overly complicated π
β‘οΈ make ur own:
β¨The
@khanacademy
design team is hosting office hours next week! Here are some things we can help you with:
1. Portfolio & resume feedback
2. Design critique on a specific project
3. Interview prep
We can also answer any random questions you have about us or design in general!
i started working with a new cohort of students last week and wanted to try something new to kick off Labs π! during our first class, i created a profile component and had the students edit it to be their own. we voted on each other's 2 truths and a lie with βοΈs.
i spent the last couple weeks writing a lesson on how to analyze any design. it took a long time, but i'm pretty happy with the guidebook i came up with π€
step 1~ what you see: what visual elements do you see? do you notice any themes across all the elements?
my dreams came true today! a kid on
@Primer
started a design club where they create logos, backgrounds, and profile pictures for the rest of the community π
what's next? i'll be joining
@withprimer
as their founding designer! i'm so excited to continue exploring the education space and build learning communities.
i can't believe every issue of emigre magazine is available through an iOS app! there are so many gems and i've been learning so much from flipping through the pages.
π₯³Β the art of visual design (elizabethβs version) is live!

This is a deliberate and gross semantic fallacy. Gatekeeper has a specific connotation in one of your uses but now you are using it as a concept to apply to LITERALLY ANYONE who may enlighten you to knowledge you didn't possess.
Jr designers, don't be like this.
Iβve decided to join Lambda X at
@lambdaschool
, the program that prepares students to get a job by building real products for their portfolio! Iβm super excited to mentor students and guide their projects to help them succeed π
β¨ i've been running a visual design club every friday with all the
@LambdaSchool
design students as a way to build their visual design skills and experiment with new teaching methods! last week, i tried a series of design puzzles in
@figmadesign
that build upon one another.
if you are a designer in the industry, you are a gatekeeper even if you don't want to be! there are so many secret & unspoken rules, tips, and ways to get into the industry that designers are not transparent about. an interviewer is literally a gatekeeper.
i'm so tired of arguing with people about the importance of visual design π₯²
"the best ux is often ugly" is a narrative that a bunch of people with no visual design skills try to push forward π
finished my
@figma
jeopardy game using variables! the categories, questions, answers, team names, and colors can all be adjusted with variables π«¨! i also added a lil points tracker π
β¨ it's live in the community~
β¨ !!! this is the most exciting thing i've ever designed. we're letting students on
@withprimer
customize their project journal backgrounds with css π! i'm so excited to see what they come up with.
huge shoutout to
@eric__mckay
for making this happen!

π inspired by the quilt activity during config, i started class today with a quilt activity where everyone created a composition in a square that best represented themselves!
i spent most of 2022 planning my wedding! i stared at one too many ugly script fonts π₯², but i think it all turned out pretty well in the end. before i leave wedding planning behind me forever, i decided to create a
@Notion
template to share my process~
i've been deep in an old internet research rabbit hole this week creating the "lessons through history" module. some of my favorite gems:
1. microsoft word, mac, 1990
2. microsoft website, 1994
3. ty, 2000
4. the white house, 1995
β¨π° A month ago, I left Khan Academy after 4 years and it was really bittersweet π. I met some of my closest friends and learned from an amazing team. Most importantly, during my last week, I finally made recess π’ a thing.
β¨ the art of visual design (elizabeth's version) is officially launching on wed, november 8th!
i updated the landing page to include some new details about the curriculum & what to expect:
i can't wait to share it with you all π₯Ή
β¨ why should you be a designer at
@Primer
? β¨
1/ if you thrive on user feedback, there's nothing more brutally honest and inspiring than a live brainstorm with the kids using Primer Rooms! i also get π emails and messages like this from users on a weekly basis:
i have so many feelings about design bootcamps that i might share some day, but the thing that makes me the most upset is how often these programs leave students hanging after they "finish their portfolio."
β¨ did a visual inspiration finding scavenger hunt today with the students! the goal was to start thinking critically about *why* they like or dislike something. what works about this design? what could be improved? what elements do i want to take into my own work?
0/ i recently discovered that my favorite video game genre is called a cozy game. basically any game that has a fishing mini game π. stardew valley is probably the most popular!
over the last couple years, iβve played a lot of them and here are my favorites β¬οΈ
hi i finally updated my website after forever. i spent approx. 10000000 years making sure everything aligned to the grid, so pls enjoy (there are defs still some glitches π.) any thoughts or feedback appreciated!
π so excited about this! we've been working on rooms for the last few months and have seen so many kids form meaningful friendships with each other!
β¨ my
@NotionHQ
job tracker is live! i know there are a bajillion job trackers out there already, but i think this one is a little unique π₯°
good luck on your job search and i hope this template helps organize some of the chaos!
the art of visual design is all powered with
@NotionHQ
! i can make updates to the course content, see student progress, and completion all in one place!
all my years designing dashboards for teachers really came in handy here π€
thank you
@varunrau
for making this all work β¨!
π¨πΆ we did an iteration session today
@LambdaSchool
with the students in
@figmadesign
and here's the output! we grouped them into teams and they all started with the same base screen. the goal was to get the most iterations in 25m!
βοΈ experimented with playing design telephone in
@figma
! everyone who participated had to convert the prev design from either pretty to ugly or ugly to pretty with 10 steps.
after you finished, you would send the same file to someone else!
πΌ just finished teaching my 2nd round of guis through art history with
@hyperlink_a
! in this class, we explore what interfaces could look like if they were inspired by a movement in art history.
so many things this year π
- started working for myself
- launched my first design course on my own platform
- started learning jazz improv
- got into a wind ensemble
- attended shows at ny fashion week
β¨ we're looking for a designer to join the team at
@withprimer

π create powerful tools for homeschooling families
π¨ design live collaborative experiences for kids

fun to be considered old now π but i also find this comment extremely frustrating because it minimizing how many years i put into learning and improving as a designer to land my first role!
too many programs today make design seem like a 12 week instant new job makeover π
for my last project, i decided to publish all our labs design lessons to the
@figma
community! i hope you find some of these lessons useful for learning about or teaching your organizations about design.
β¨ i wrote a piece for
@smashingmag
about visual communication! when i was first learning design and development, i read a lot of articles from them to understand the basics π₯°
always happy to provide guidance if you're looking to become a better visual storyteller π
Weβre taught to communicate with words. We write essays, prepare speeches, and take written notes. But words arenβt always the best option for conveying information and ideas.
β¬ The Principles of Visual Communication
i've been doing a lot of research on the cranbrook academy and i love how katherine mccoy describes the role of the (now-called) ux/product designer.
this essay was written in 1998!
i'm hosting a little open house where you can experience some of the lessons for free!
the 1st one i'm sharing is "eyes for design" from "developing taste". i wanted to share this one first because i think it's especially unique β¨

@withprimer
is awarding up to $500 per student to fund ambitious projects from kids around the world! when I was 12, I would have spent $500 starting graphic design print studio for local events! what would you spend it on π?
i made a lil typography game called fontguessr with
@varunrau
! test your font guessing skills while learning some type anatomy basics. the levels progress in difficulty from a paragraph of text -> one word -> two letters!
π test your skills:
(I also want to mention that this role came after applying to 75 jobs and spending more than 70 hours interviewing π±. Iβm planning to share more about my learnings during interviewing later, but looking for a job is seriously a full-time job.)
i wrote about my process for creating the curriculum for β¨ the art of visual design β¨. Itβs been challenging to fit my ambitious dreams into a digestible format!
