Burien neighbors! We have an abundance of produce at the community pantry- more than we can store- please come by if you or someone you know is in need of fresh produce!

I want to ask them: How else are we supposed to pressure him to change? If he thinks he’s got our votes wrapped up no matter how much he opposes our values then he has no reason to stop. I can’t vote for that.
This is so irresponsible of
@komonews
to air if they aren’t providing the context that this deeply right wing church has not bothered to build relationships with these people and treat them like humans. Would you trust some random dude promising you free housing?
A deacon at a church across the street says his pastor offered free housing to the homeless campers near the courthouse in Burien and even help finding jobs, but they had to stay clean and sober. I'm told the pastor got turned down. Live on KOMO-TV at 6pm

Means testing will mean delays; we need to send to everyone, make it simple and no strings attached. Encourage those who don’t need it to donate or spend at small businesses. This isn’t a time to worry about giving too much.
Many of you know this about me but for those who don’t: I grew up in a law enforcement family. My parents are both former deputies, my father a major crimes detective and my mother a detective sergeant in special assault/crimes against children. I am an abolitionist…🧵
It is shocking to me that 4 members of Burien city council voted against this offer of $1M and even tiny homes for our unhoused from King County. How do we even justify being our own jurisdiction when we actively refuse offers to meet the basic needs of our residents?
The news says “stay inside” but that’s only for people who have homes to stay inside of.
Tomorrow my city council is going to vote to make their lives even harder.
A friend told me they are holding a lot of anger. I am too. Anger and despair.
How did it come to this?

Not difficult but less effective; last years income means nothing if your job has vanished. What if you didn’t file? Also, in Seattle and NYC and San Francisco (hardest hit areas) $100k income for a fam of 4 is near poverty level.
City of Burien is literally having a nonprofit animal shelter hire private security to do a sweep of a homeless encampment to create a dog park so that downtown will look nice in time for Pride. It sounds like a headline from
@TheNeedling
but alas it’s real 🙃
This is SUCH nonsense. Mayor Aragon knows we have not defunded our police (it's more than 50% of Burien's entire budget!) and this isn't even a dog whistle it's an open appeal to the right. Worse, it's spreading information she knows to be false. We need better from our leaders!
At some point, Burien, we are going to have to address the childish fragility of our city manager who is now adding council members to the existing list of community members he refuses to meet with. This is unacceptable behavior from an unelected city leader.
Couldn’t possibly be that her flowers are tacky and overpriced and she’s made herself one of the faces of Burien’s right wing? Has to be the fault of the unhoused several blocks away from her storefront!

No one wants to stay in touch with abusive fathers, that’s the point. Putting the blame on daughters is just perpetuating the narrative that if women are lonely it’s our own fault and if men are lonely it’s women’s fault (which is the point of the QT)
Hearing that once again the pride flags were stolen in Burien. You bigots keep trying this every year and it never stops the community from coming together and surrounding our LGBTQIA+ folks with love!

Just a reminder that when you donate to

you’re paying for their displacement of 43 human beings to make a dog park. I used to be a donor and it makes me so sad for the staff and animals but I cannot in good conscience support an organization that would do this:
If you need any evidence of how much it sucks to be fat and even remotely in public, this threat will do it.
Thin friends: I had to survive an eating disorder in a fat body to unlearn my fat hate. I don’t think that’s what it should take. Have you started to unlearn yours?
Hello here's a thread of people being fatphobic to me because I offered to be anyone's public health friend who recommends they not travel home:
Also, being fat like I am now is the healthiest I've ever been and I *love* my fatness and no one will ever take that from me

This is Jaga. He had to wear a sweater after being on an IV for 3 days after he got Lilly toxicity in 2021 💔 I didn’t know they were dangerous and I’m so lucky he survived. So glad to see the message spreading!
We have lost another member of our community. I am devastated for the people closest to him and share their grief. I am also angry at the politicians who jockeyed for photographs of his body and tried to use his death to justify their unconstitutional camping ban.
My face when the org that spent $$$$ & swept 40+ people to build that ugly dog park is fundraising because they can’t fund the animal shelter we actually need.
@saladinahmed
How early we are taught that beauty is currency; shamed for trying too hard to achieve it and shamed or erased for not having it. And how often fictional women must be beautiful OR have their whole story/character be about the fact that they are not.
@jdesmondharris
…about the positive attention I got from other people because of my shrinking body/muscle tone/performance of health. I think it’s hard to see this in yourself when it happens but so many people get a kind of high from this attention and start evangelizing fitness as self love
What is the point of a democratic majority when dudebros who call themselves democrats kill popular bills like rent stabilization?? The dems can lose my number for fundraising until we figure out if being a member of this party means shared values or not.

Most of us were protected in 2020 by increased unemployment benefits, stimulus checks, eviction moratoriums, etc. I don’t think this is a Trump vs Biden question, we had protections in place during 2020 that kept many from falling through the cracks. many have since ended.
My upbringing gave me a clear sense of the issues with modern policing & particularly the culture of many police departments. I grew up sheltered from how those issues impacted vulnerable people, the poor, and especially Black and brown people. But I saw how they impacted police

Fat person who has done this myself. In my experience the gym updates/workout selfies/step count posts on social media can be very triggering to a lot of people. I did this myself and was suddenly all about how the gym had built my “confidence” when really it was all…. (1/x)
This is what I’d like everyone complaining about yesterday’s I-5 action to internalize. If we had a way to stop this horror without disrupting your day, we would. Show me the ballot where I’ve ever had a major presidential candidate to vote for who didn’t support the occupation.

Minimizing this language enables the violence it incites.
Especially any one trying to do the right thing or make positive change to that culture. I saw how the worst behaviors were excused, covered up, or even celebrated. There is a reason I have gone no contact with my father for decades.

In case it wasn’t abundantly clear that Burien ordinance 827 is about using public resources to protect private property owners, council member Linda Akey was filming us today sharing coffee and snacks with the unhoused while they packed up their tents.
Really devastated by Burien city council’s decision last night to remove Charles Schaefer as planning commission chair so I’ve decided to resign from the Burien Airport Committee.
I’ve peaked! I was interviewed for this episode of Seattle Now (the main reason to listen is for

Like.. you are not entitled to a successful business. When you make yourself loud and visible in support of hateful policies and allied with hateful people, maybe people don’t want to shop in your little boutique any more?
This will mean that dozens of unhoused people will have safe, secure, stable housing options. This won’t end the problem or fix everything but it is a start and it’s not nothing. I am proud to live in Burien today.
Went out today to set up the 12 apartments we sponsored. It was a beautiful and positive experience, but I was sad to hear how much pushback the org is getting from our community. What makes someone feel entitled to prevent a wonderful resource like this from coming to Burien?
So it’s not comfortable for me to speak up in support of a police chief and it doesn’t mean I think policing as currently conducted in this country isn’t toxic and racist and in need of being completely abolished and reimagined. And. It’s more complicated than that here.
The KC Sheriff and Chief Boe are trying to fulfill their roles in a way that also follows the constitution and promotes public safety by putting police resources where they are most effective. The city manager is being a petty tyrant.
Another great Wednesday Night Supper Club! This amazing group of friends and neighbors is the best part of my week.

I wish I had a call to action here but really I just want to say that these events have complicated my (long established) worldview about police & while I don’t think they should have to sue municipalities to defend people against unconstitutional ordinances, I’m glad KCSO is.

That’s not at all what people are saying. People are saying that even people like TS with body issues can choose not to contribute to the fatphobia in our society. The issue isn’t that she spoke about her body issues it’s that she added to the narrative that being fat is bad.

Kevin Schilling, Sofia Aragon, Jimmy Matta, and Stephanie Mora should get asked about this vote in every candidate forum in every race they ever enter for public office from here on.
I need to talk about today and my brain is so tired I don’t know if I’m going to make any sense. Today started with the tragic news that one of our unhoused friends had passed away. We don’t know the exact circumstances of his death.
Read through the full document with Boe’s testimony. I think you’ll see why the city manager’s attempt to wield police resources as his personal weapon against the unhoused is not only threatening the unhoused it’s making us all less safe.
@derg_corv
I’m the one in the beanie and red hoodie in this video and I witness the whole thing - this space is part of the severe weather shelter so we were trying to clear out the crowd to set up beds. It was after 8pm and August was nothing but polite while being called horrible things.
Sharing the letter presented by officers of Burien PD at Monday’s council meeting. These officers are upset with the city manager and mayor’s attempts to get Chief Boe removed for following the Sheriff’s order not to enforce the unconstitutional camping ban:
Does it include medically supervised and appropriate detox? Or just cold turkey no excuses sobriety? What other strings are attached? The unhoused are extremely vulnerable to trafficking and exploitation so reporting this as a good faith offer and their refusal as unreasonable
It’s January. The

Went out to the encampment on ambaum with supplies- the heat isn’t going to let up this week so if anyone wants to team up to bring coolers w-/ice & water/sports drinks out, that’s my goal for this week.
I have had a very busy week at work so I feel behind the ball on sharing Burien news but this is a pretty good summary of what’s been going on: (alas I cannot take credit for the creation of this meme but hat tip to the brilliant human who did!)
City of Burien Sued Over Camping Ban that “Banishes” Homeless Residents From City (

Law enforcement and city government should be partners in public safety, they should be guided by the constitution, by data and evidence, and by the common goal of keeping everyone safe regardless of income or identity. We are a long way from a world where that’s how it works.
I’m one of the lucky ones: mine is only $99/month. But my husband has private loans and his $500/month payments never paused.
I STILL WANT STUDENT DEBT CANCELED EVEN IF IT DOESN’T SAVE ME ANYTHING PERSONALLY
Today, after a pause on federal student loans that spanned nearly 1,300 days, the Biden administration voluntarily turned them back on. No court order. Not coupled with cancelation. Just going right back to the crisis we had before COVID. Quote tweet with your interest/payment.
@KJSchilling94
Of course addiction is part of this crisis but you govern like addressing addiction is addressing homelessness and it isn’t. If every person on the street got clean tomorrow we still wouldn’t have places for them to live and they still couldn’t pay first last and a deposit.
... so I requested the correspondence from Aaron Burkhalter via public records request and that is decidedly NOT what the email says. Read for yourself: this email (sent June 13 & 14) clearly states that shelter was not offered to every individual.
When people say we can disagree about things and still be friends/allies/in the same political party, this is what it should mean. We agree on opposing genocide, so IDGAF if you have bad takes about chocolate.
- is shoddy journalism that misleads your audience about the complexity of this situation. Have you independently verified that the offer of housing is even real? Or are you just trying to stoke anger in the “nobody wants to work anymore” set?

@reluctantlyjoe
Yup.. the pride flag was stolen from city hall in Burien and the comments on the Facebook post are just a parade of open, unabashed homophobia and transphobia. Has definitely gotten more brazen
Dude if you think giving people water during a heat wave is “enabling” I feel sorry for you. For what it’s worth the people I’ve talked to all come from Burien but it doesn’t matter to me- I was a Burien resident the day I moved here and so are they.
I love when politicians who are actively serving in power and hold the majority and can basically get anything on their agenda passed at will complain about the government’s lack of action:
Ben Franklin also said “Why increase the sons of Africa, by planting them in America, where we have so fair an opportunity, by excluding all blacks and tawnys, of increasing the lovely white and red?”
“Observations Concerning the Increase of Mankind”, 1751
I know I’m harping on this & it might seem like a minor thing but the “everyone has been offered shelter” lie is being spread as fact by conservative media. We need elected officials to share accurate information. See the recent piece by former council candidate Martin Barrett
“Although council members, including Deputy Mayor Kevin Schilling, have claimed that encampment residents are simply refusing to accept shelter and housing…”
if you missed the evidence about this, here is the video of his claim & the document he’s misrepresenting:
Love this. The
@PortofSeattle
is letting
@burien
know that the NERA site the Deputy Mayor proposed exploring as a possible site for an encampment is unsafe for human habitation. Which we all knew. So why did Kevin Schilling propose it instead of the Toyota lot?
I’ll be live-tweeting tonight’s meeting (aiming to do this for as many of the 2024 meetings as possible, as I did 2023.) Since we have a new, more reactionary, council & I’m filled w/ existential dread I can’t promise the substance will outweigh the mean gifs but I’ll do my best!

And to be clear: this is in no way a critique of LEAD or the service providers who are working so hard to serve our unhoused community. They are informing the council accurately about their work. My issue is with elected officials who lie repeatedly about this like Schilling has.
A year later and all we’ve done is further brutalize vulnerable people and delay resources that could have helped them. We have to learn from this, Burien.
Over the course of a year, a Seattle suburb’s grapple with how to handle a small but growing homeless population showed the faultlines in current U.S. response.
Our friends at the Ambaum camp were swept today and Burien is officially enforcing the daytime camping ban. Sunnydale village is taking in as many of the displaced as they possibly can, but we need volunteers!
This lie is a critical part of the justification for Burien's continued sweeps of our unhoused. Both Kevin Schilling and Stephanie Mora have repeated the lie that everyone has been offered shelter from the dias. Neither has taken any steps to correct the record.
If a Burien hadn’t incorporated the unhoused would have been able to access these resources. Anyway thank you
@kcexec
for trying. This was our city leaders failing to help those most in need when being presented with the resources to do so, and it’s embarrassing.
There are some days I feel really hopeless. And friends, we might be in for a really sad Election Day. But I know in my heart that my candidates are pushing policy they believe in, not saying what they hope will get them votes.
