Re: flying in photojournalists for “impartial” election coverage here in Kenya. Small reminder that local photographers are producing work that isn’t through the prism of whiteness or masculinity. We don’t need to be impartial because we have a greater desire to document truth.

Dar es Salaam: Mama Veronica cooked @thebongolese and me a feast on such short notice. She borrowed an extra jiko (lol what’s the English word for this?) from her neighbor to make it all happen. There was fish, chicken, rice, bananas, potatoes, greens you name it. Our women. Wow

Anyway without giving too much else away, the book also includes recipes from Eritrea, Mozambique, Somalia, and South Africa. It’s an ode to the African countries that touch the Indian Ocean, places that have been woefully underrepresented in the culinary world.

Some background: My gran was traveling with my aunt. She wasn’t assigned an emergency exit row seat (where you’d need to be physically able to open the emergency door) and had my aunt to aid her on the flight.

What’s irritating me most about these “we commit to doing better” statements is how marginalizing an entire demographic is framed as ignorance. Decades of erasure and non inclusion is NOT a mistake. It’s INTENTIONAL and systematic. No black square will make me think otherwise.
