The problem is only partially one of public diplomacy. You need better crafted statements to be sure, but more importantly, you need better decisions & leadership from the gov't. Nothing the embassy says in DC can whitewash lack of leadership from Riyadh.

My assessment of a southern state in Yemen: Demands for autonomy are justified by legitimate grievances against the north but those are best worked out in peaceful negotiations. An independent state under current conditions however is not realistic.

Some prefer Sept, of 2014 as start date - semantics of course. Houthis took over Sanaa Not Riyadh after all & Riyadh's reaction was neither appropriate nor effective, & has been the most destructive of Yemen. Ultimately, Blame is irrelevant, focus should be on ending the war.
