I have
@talk_spy
piece that explains how a UFO fabulist became a media darling.
His claims are preposterous. And yet, he is a big reason for the UFO mania in recent years that has now infected Congress.
How how did that happen?
It's impossible to overstate the massive journalism fail we're seeing today with the elevation of supposedly mysterious UFOs as a legitimate news story. 1/
โI'm not telling you that it doesn't sound wacky. What I'm telling you, it's real,โ says Luis Elizondo, a 20-year veteran of covert military intelligence operations, about UFOs. โWhat is it? What are its intentions? What are its capabilities?โ
So let me end with a plea to my journalism colleagues. We live in a conspiracy-fueled time. (QAnon, The Big Lie, etc.)
Stop with the uncritical UFO stories driven by a handful of people who now inhabit the same world as a 9/11 truther, Tucker Carlson and alien abductees. 10/10
This rejection of Elizondo's claims by DoD was first reported in my 2019 piece.
FWIW: The Pentagon has not deviated from its assertion that he never had anything to do with researching UFOs.
How does 60 Minutes not even address this discrepancy? 4/
Look, I get it that on one level, all this stuff is mostly entertaining to many ppl. But it's important to remember that UFOs are one of the main gateways into conspiracy culture--and has been for a long while. 9/
One of these few people showing up in virtually every major news story since 2017 (as a UFO whistleblower) is Luis Elizondo, a former military intelligence officer.
But as
@ScolesSarah
also points out,
@60Minutes
omitted an important detail: 3/
The Pentagon has previously stated that Luis Elizondo had no assigned responsibilities w/its UFO research program (which he says he directed) and also that its UFO research program didn't actually research UFOs. Why the discrepancy? Why so little mention of the discrepancy? 6/6
This matters because all the mainstream UFO stories we've seen since 2017-starting with a big NYT front page story--and of late in New Yorker, at 60 Min et al, hinge on Elizondo as a credible national security professional. 5/
Right? He's the linchpin
โI'm not telling you that it doesn't sound wacky. What I'm telling you, it's real,โ says Luis Elizondo, a 20-year veteran of covert military intelligence operations, about UFOs. โWhat is it? What are its intentions? What are its capabilities?โ
But to do make Elizondo the credible face of the UFO story, as many in the media have, you have to ignore his deep and open embrace of UFO conspiracy nuts across the spectrum, starting with Tom DeLonge in 2017.
6/
Richard Dolan, for those unfamiliar with him, is a 9/11 truther.
So Luis Elizondo, the media's favorite UFO whistleblower, has now joined forces with a leading conspiracist. Maybe
@60Minutes
will mention that in its its next big UFO report. 8/
The latest and most egregious example of Elizondo's cozying up to conspiracy lunatics is his upcoming May 20 appearance with longtime conspiracist Richard Dolan. 7/
@oneunderscore__
@RadioFreeTom
She's had a conspiratorial mindset for quite some time. As I noted in this profile of her last year, she even believes that booksellers conspired against her in 2015.
This idea that the NYT tax story will stick like no other Trump scandal baffles me. After Access Hollywood, Stormy Daniels, Ukraine, etc?
And this bombshell from two weeks ago?
But MAGA will be upset he didn't pay taxes?
This is how the power lines cause cancer myth originated decades ago. Dubious claim made in journal article, then legitimized and disseminated in authoritative, mainstream media outlets.
If you want to know why UFOs are all over the media these days, a good starting point is 3 yrs ago, when former top DoD official Chris Mellon wrote a WaPo opinion piece titled, "The military keeps encountering UFOs. Why doesn't the Pentagon care?" 1/
I am struck by the people in media who often write credulously about UFOs. Some of them behave in ways that should disqualify them from reporting about the topic for news organizations. At the top of this list is Leslie Kean.
Thread.
What is wrong with
@nytimes
? The paper has brought back alien abduction enthusiast Ralph Blumenthal and walking conflict of interest Leslie Kean to cover next week's House hearing on UFOs. Both are openly biased and closely tied to interested parties.
It's been almost 80 yrs since UFO mania first swept the U.S.
Still no evidence of otherworldly space crafts or alien visitors.
Yet we are junkies for never-ending
#UFO
stories. Here's a few reasons I lay out in
@sciam
for why we can't quit this habit.
Seems a good time to re-up this essential
@ScolesSarah
piece.
โReporters have taken sources at their word without corroborating data, let documented contradictions slide by, and glossed over the motivations of both outside agitators and govt insiders.โ
Since this thread has struck a chord with many, let me recommend a terrific & relevant book. "The Confidence Game: Why We Fall for it...Every Time," by
@mkonnikova
It's about how all of us--no matter our intelligence & education--are susceptible to being deceived.
Itโs such great marketing to have another Tom DeLonge-like celebrity to be spreading the word about a Scooby Doo ranch that was birthed in the Bigelow fantasy factory.
The WH briefing with Pentagon Spokesperson John Kirby on UFOs, China's spy balloon and the recent U.S. shoot-down of 4 mysterious high-altitude objects was a masterclass in govt mixed messaging.
And confirmation bias by many who watched it. Let's unroll the tape. 1/
@Deggans
@sbg1
"the media scandal of 2016 isnโt so much about what reporters failed to tell the American public; itโs about what they did report on, and the fact that it didnโt seem to matter. Stories that would have killed any other politician...did not stop Trump from thriving..." 2/
Here's a story about my interaction with Travis Taylor, a scientist who works in intel community.
Taylor also does a LARP with Ancient Aliens and Skinwalker Ranch shows.
I met him when he was a speaker at the first
@ExploreSCU
in 2019.
Let's go. 1/
It's impossible to overstate the massive journalism fail we're seeing today with the elevation of supposedly mysterious UFOs as a legitimate news story. 1/
The big tell in all this Corbell & Knapp's primary role. These are the same jokers who have been selling the Bob Lazar hoax for yrs.
If any of this was truly serious, UFO hucksters wouldn't be anywhere near an actual national security whistleblower.
"You said put on your tinfoil hats, people should put on their battle helmets, right now."
Investigative journalist Jeremy Corbell says the world needs to catch up with how seriously UFOs are being taken 'at the highest levels of government'.
@Roolockwood
|
@JeremyCorbell
"The scientific community needs to engage with all sectors of society in a thoughtful, energetic campaign in support of educators, researchers and communicators so that the ability to discern the truth becomes part of our childrenโs DNA."
@CaulfieldTim
Did you know that the "Roswell" event had been a forgotten footnote in the UFO annals--until a newly published book in 1980 became a best-seller?
The book's crashed saucer (and cover-up) claim generated much media attention.
There were two authors of "The Roswell Incident."
"Most scientific controversies arenโt about science at all, and once the sides are drawn, more data is unlikely to bring opponents into agreement." Excellent
@cragcrest
piece that also speaks to why focus should be on values underlying these controversies.
@Deggans
You are correct. Let's remember that Trump's brazen lies, atrocious behavior and and corrupt business schemes were all revealed in the 2016 Presidential election. It didn't matter to those that voted for him. As
@sbg1
wrote in a Dec/2016 essay: 1/
So wait a second, the whistleblower did not go to the NYT, WaPo, WSJ or any credible journalistic outlet.
He first went to a pair of UFO hucksters (Corbell & Knapp) long known for propagating fraudulent UFO narratives.
Are you kidding me!!
Journalism at its worst: single source article based on unpublished, non-peer reviewed paper. No relevant experts cited or quoted to speak to credibility of the science.
@motherboard
, what is wrong with you?
Here's a UFO-related story from me
@theintercept
that stands apart from the pack journalism voluminously on display this past week.
The "truth" is out there...somewhere.
The UFO phenomenon is mostly an aerospace/counterintelligence story, seized on by grifters, fueled by the sci-fi culture industry, and perpetuated by lazy journalism.
You're welcome.
Iโm a PhD astrophysicist, and I once saw a UFO
In December of 2006, I saw a UFO.
By asking, "what could humans have done to make this?" rather than "could it be ALIENS??!?!" we can make signal, not noise.
I published my first feature in Science in 1999--about a lynx reintroduction program in Colorado.
I could never have imagined then that I might one day write a long piece about UFOs for the same magazine.
It's worth unpacking how this came to be. 1/
My
@POLITICOMag
story published today has its tangled roots in a long 2013 feature I did elsewhere. What follows is a thread on how a poisonous tree keeps dropping its stunted fruit in my lap. 1/
Want to understand the formula for bogus UFO and paranormal narratives (like present-day "Skinwalker Ranch")?
Read this excellent piece on a phony ghost story.
Grifter hoaxes that turn become pop culture gold is a quintessentially American thing.
Sunday, Lt. Cmdr. Alex Dietrich speaks publicly for the first time about an incident in 2004, known as the Nimitz Encounter. It was an example of โunidentified aerial phenomenaโ and acknowledged by the Pentagon.
To sum up, some truly misguided journalism by biased individuals with conflicts of interest has played a major role in creating and sustaining a dubious UFO narrative.
The only mystery here is how it got this far.
There's much to learn about unidentified aerial phenomena.
But one thing is sure โ the American people deserve full transparency.
Next week,
@HouseIntel
will give the public a chance to hear from experts on one of the greatest mysteries of our time.
Just a reminder: Elizondo has never furnished any proof that he was the director of a secret UFO Pentagon program. No one has.
Oh, and the Pentagon has steadfastly denied his claim.
This story stands.
@Deggans
@sbg1
As
@sbg1
went on to note: "Even fact-checking perhaps the most untruthful candidate of our lifetime didnโt work; the more news outlets did it, the less the facts resonated."
That trend continued over the next four years.
This is not give journalism a free pass. 3/
Just to be clear: This encapsulates everything that is wrong with how "UFOs" are covered by mainstream media.
The guy giving expert context is a well known UFO nut.
The world is getting a glimpse at leaked military radar readings showing possible UFO activity near a Navy warship off the coast of California.
@GadiNBC
has more.
So let me get this straight. The main funder/sponsor for the "journalist" holding forth on this event is a well-known anti-vaccine promoter. So much for sound science. 1/
Good historical perspective on UFO redux, especially recent crash retrieval storyline. And interesting hypnoses as to why.
Whatever the reason, it seems clear that โflooding the zone with BSโ (and multiple narratives) are part of the strategy.
@RadioFreeTom
He wanted to do UFO disclosure himself.
The Deep State swooped in when they did to keep us from learning the truth about our alien overlords.
Remember, John Mack was a Pulitzer-prize winning Harvard scholar.
This guy is a respected Stanford geneticist who thinks it's possible that aliens bred war-loving humans.
IQ and achievement do not immunize you against fringy beliefs and pseudoscience.
17 GN mentioned tribal warfare & aggressive genes being passed on. Is it possible certain tribes were guided together by "them" & forced into wars (for unknown reasons), w/the result being: The strong survived & made us the aggressive species we r today?
It just so happens that 2 former Pentagon officials--Luis Elizondo and Chris Mellon--are the ones who have largely orchestrated all the hyped UFO media stories you have been reading for past 2 years. They work for an entertainment company that has a UFO show on History channel.
And this, folks, is how you construct an alternate reality.
Journalism scholars in the future will have a roadmap to a manufactured narrative with this story.

Remember when the UFO bubble was burst earlier this year after shoot-down of the Chinese spy balloon?
All the silly alien talk was replaced by what was likely flying in our skies.
1/
P.S.
Forgot to mention this quote from a new interview with Travis Taylor, which spurred me to post my anecdote and thread.
โYou know, Iโd never seen a UFO until I got out there [Skinwalker Ranch]. Now, Iโve seen more UFOs now than you can count.โ
@garyruskin
@BioBeef
@StacyMalkan
@USRightToKnow
You truly are shameless, Gary. I'm sorry to see that you, Stacy and Thacker are still practicing these gutter tactics.
And "terminator cattle"? Really? Isn't that 1999 meme a little stale today?
Does it matter who funds, promotes and profits off of disinformation in the health & science arenas? We seem to think so when it comes to climate change & "wellness" racket. So why ignore role of organic/anti-vaccine players who push glyphosate = cancer?
So people who are truly concerned about keeping the vaccine communication landscape from being polluted should take an interest in the glyphosate story and how it is being exploited by influential anti-vaccine messengers and even shameless lawyers:
"Look," Taylor said, unprompted: "The videos have been monkeyed around with...the range to target is missing, so you can't tell how big it is and how fast it's moving. So thatโs suspicious right there."
I asked him if it might have been new generation recon craft. He nodded. 4/
This is cringe. Or maybe a cry for help?
Nolan, in case you didn't know, believes he's been visited by space aliens and talks about them being on earth for a long time.
This Vice article is a cut & paste of an opinion column from a dubious author connected to DoD/intel community, who misrepresented what Congress said.
Sadly, its so easy to manipulate and exploit media. But this is essentially how a preposterous UFO story keeps chugging along.
My latest for
@sciam
delves into an infamous chapter of the Cold War and its similarity to the Havana Syndrome narrative.
There are aspects to this story that are worth exploring at length--such as the scientific, journalistic & intelligence angles. 1/
Just your periodic reminder that every mainstream media outletโfrom 60 Minutes to CNN to NBCโrelied on this guy as a go-to expert source for their credulous UFO stories.
The UFO is one of the most recognizable shapes around the world. This is a replica of the UFO poster Bob Lazar saw on the walls when he worked at SITE 4 / Area 51. Lazar gave nicknames for each of the 9 craft he saw. This one he dubbed the Sport Model.
#UFO
art by Scott Mitchell
In his 2019
@ExploreSCUtalk
, Taylor was very dubious of the DeLonge/Elizondo TTSA venture--and of UFO narratives in general. Said he wanted hard data, not stories.
(I look forward to seeing the Skinwalker Ranch hard data. But let's not get ahead of ourselves.) 2/
It is fascinating that UFO narratives (and public interest) are being driven by members of the intelligence community. Elizondo & Taylor say they still hold top secret clearances and still inhabit the "black" world.
They are two sides of the same coin. 13/
As I mentioned in a recent thread, a big reason I've been writing about UFOs of late is b/c they are back in the headlines. Why is that? It fascinates me b/c today's breathless stories are the same as those from 50 & 60 yrs ago, esp the military angle. 1/
"In many respects, the [current UFO] narrative is a textbook example of circular reporting, with each person relaying what they heard, but the information often ultimately being sourced to the same small group of individuals."
A timeless UFO recipe!
Elizondo rolled his eyes and said, "That's the guy from Ancient Aliens, right?"
He had a point. And shortly after that, Taylor would go on to become the star of Skinwalker Ranch, where he has since claimed to see many strange UFOs. (So much for hard data).
Interestingly... 10/
I have asked
@AENetworks
repeatedly this week if it stands by the claims made by Luis Elizondo in Unidentified--specifically that he ran the Pentagon's UFO program--which has been promoted as "nonfiction."
No response.
@anthonylappe
, what about you?
One was Charles Berlitz who in 1974 wrote a best-selling book on the Bermuda Triangle, thrusting that decades-old urban legend into pop culture.
The other was Bill Moore, who in 1989 infamously confessed (?) or claimed to being a govt asset tasked with spreading UFO tales.
@TheUFOTrail
After my Intercept piece was published in 2019, Bender raged at me on Twitter, called me a hack, then blocked me. He also said my story would be contradicted by his Pentagon sources within days. That never happened.
My story stands. Waiting for apology.
Russia's invasion of Ukraine has understandably dominated the news for weeks. So the IC's annual national security threat assessment has flown under the radar.
I'd like to explain why this new document tells you everything you need to know about UFOs. 1/
"Thatโs the thing," Taylor said. "I tell people, if you took two F-4 [Phantom ll] pilots in 1970 and they started chasing the SR-71, they would have no clue it existed, no clue what it was, and they couldnโt catch it. And to them it would be an alien spacecraft..." 5/
Odd to see a leading Havana Syndrome advocate join with UFO nutters to amplify his message.

BREAKING: In an exclusive feature, The Debrief reveals the controversial past that led to the sudden dismissal of the Pentagonโs top counterintelligence chief, head of the Afghan refugee evacuations, and executive secretary of the DoDโs UAP office.
"If you present evidence clearly & respectfully most people listen & will change their minds."
One hundred percent false. We all process information though a filter distorted by cognitive biases.
Not true. This is another version of the backfire effect, which has not replicated. It also treats listeners as too dumb to understand rational arguments & unable to reason their way to truth. If you present evidence clearly & respectfully most people listen & will change their
This pretty much sums up what UFOs are all about. The more CNN, NYT, and Politico serve as credulous vessels for "former Pentagon officials" and Navy pilots telling stories about UFOs, the more merch, podcasts, and "documentaries" these folks can peddle.
Gary Nolan is a cancer researcher at Stanford who, like many smart individuals, has been swallowed up in a UFO rabbit hole.
