I like that quote-"life is not measured by the number of breaths you take but by the number of moments that take your breath away." On in-patient rounds today 1 of our patients uttered the magical words, "Thanks so much for taking care of me." Each time I hear it I'm breathless.

Great quote that Andrew Cuomo offered today when considering 1st responders to Covid-19; “Courage is not the absence of fear but rather the assessment that something else is more important than fear.” FD Roosevelt. As I watch health care teams go to work each day, I’m in awe.

Professor Kim Williams offered a nice notion about mentoring over dinner at ACC19. He said your goal is to help your mentees achieve a career "GTY". I asked what that meant...he said "Greater Than Yours". Mentoring is a privilege...and this adds a nice perspective.

My approach to a patient on this is: 1. This is your #1 problem!; 2. On average it costs a person 7-10 yrs of life; 3. Are you ready to set a quit date?; 4. If yes, do you want meds to reduce your craving and/or nicotine replacement. 5. Never stop trying!!!

Why is exercise so helpful in patients with heart disease? There are many reasons but patients like this simple notion-our muscles, especially those of the legs, function as a third heart. RV moves blood thru the lungs, LV to the periphery, muscles push blood back to the RV.

“Sunrise.” Every sunrise is a chance to take stock, give thanks, and renew. Today, of all days, I feel so thankful to have the privilege of working in the profession of medicine alongside amazing colleagues serving the needs of others. Today is precious. Life is precious.

Michigan Cardiologist-this month I completed my 25th yr working for the “maize and blue!” Like many of you, I’ve been blessed to work with countless colleagues at a university where values of team work, respect, compassion and excellence are lived every day. Life is precious.

Dinner at Mory’s(New Haven) last night with one of the most important mentors of my life, Larry Cohen. In 1979 he took me, a sub intern, and showed me what a professor of cardiology looks like and acts like. 40 yrs later, my admiration for him and mentor’s like him grows daily.

Memorial Day-time to reflect on the human sacrifices of those Americans who have given their lives for our freedom. I also honor this weekend the front line workers who lost their lives in our nation’s battle against COVID. Life is precious. (Photo-Lincoln Pond, NY by Jen Glose).

How to combat burnout? 1 way is fly fishing in beautiful places like Idaho’s Snake River. I can’t imagine a more tranquil place. With the sky, the water, and the challenge of catching trout on a small fly, I am lost in a lovely place that restores my “battery”. Life is precious.

If you go to West Yellowstone MT, stop at Eagle’s Store, go to the soda fountain, & have anything with Ma Eagle’s chocolate sauce! Same building, fountain and recipe from 90 years ago! Chocolate is heart healthy! Yellowstone is pure magic! Life is precious! Acrylic by Rich Eagle

“Sunrise over garden house”. I’m not sure that I’ve ever been more looking forward to spring. Days getting longer, vaccines deployed, & hope of our world returning to some sense of normal all on my mind. If our political divide can heal too, it will be glorious. Life is precious.

“Dark days”: with the sun setting by 5 pm & Covid raging like never before, days feel cold, short, and very dark. Yet when I watch my colleagues in nursing and medicine rush to the “front lines” each day, my spirit is buoyed...that spirit carries me another day. Life is precious.

This quote by Steven Hawking seemed relevant for our current situation, “The greatest enemy of knowledge is not ignorance, it is the illusion of knowledge.”

“This old boat.” Annual Lincoln Pond NY vacations included special bass fishing excursions with my late father-in-law, “Papa.” When I take the boat out, he’s always with me. The memories are now treasures in my mind & heart. Vacations help us remember & renew. Life is precious.

Sometimes I think the clouds are talking to me. Today, in the midst of a covid surge and election fallout, the message I heard on my way to work was simple...bring your A game to clinic today. Each patient needs and deserves your best. Each day and each life is precious.
