Everybody had fled, abandoning my old parents.
This man whose name I do not know, he returned and carried my paralysed 87-year-old father on his shoulders for two miles in waist-deep floodwaters.
I only know him as "Mustafa's brother".

Wow. Right now in Scotland:
Crowds are marching through the streets of Glasgow chanting: “Say it loud, say it clear, refugees are welcome here!”
As part of a protest against Boris Johnson.
Two absolutely sharp choices Rahul Gandhi made in earlier years:
1) saying no to this B-minus grade 'analyst'. A self-anointed PricewaterhouseCooper of politics. Garden variety careerist with sub-zero commitment to political morality
2) choosing to give the biscuit to the dog

Took a long time coming, but someone had to get around to doing this. Yuval Noah Harari has been plying the thinnest soup ever, two spoonfuls is all I could ever take.

Now, good people of Hindostan, exactly why does this not come even remotely as a surprise?
Because it was always clear that violent nationalism is a form of toxic masculinity. Repressed male violence is at the heart of it.

This has got to be the most unintentionally hilarious one ever :)) utter innocence on three counts:
a) whether a stable form of Bali iconography exists (it doesn't)
b) how a "Christian saint like Jesus" (!) is depicted
c) most cripplingly, what native Indians really look like!
Go well, Yusuf saab.
For me, he reinvented speech itself for Indian cinema. Taking it away from the distant theatrical orations of the likes of Sohrab Modi. Down to ordinary human speech, intimate whispers, mumbles, bringing a sense of nearness and interiority.

Ammuma. Grandma. She's six months shy of 100. Braved displacement during Kerala's 2017 floods. And sat out the lockdown bewildered, with her faculties fading, bewildered about why no one was coming to see her. A great grandson finally reduces the social distance with an umma :)
Almost everyone, including the SC judges who sentenced Afzal to death for "collective conscience", knew the evidence was thin. Not everyone read about the antecedents of the case, in Arundhati's fine synopsis here. The trail was very murky indeed.
No consent. Absolutely not. Crude power, violence on thousands of innocents, a threatening aspect, painting the landscape with blood...these have nothing to do with devotion.
As an Indian and a Hindu, you don’t have my consent!

The best moment in Indian cinema for you?
One of them for me: when Balraj Sahni, his words mostly unspoken and only writ on his face, gets off that tanga and joins the jan sailab...in the last scene of Garam Hawa.
A personal thread. Putting it out because it perhaps speaks to a universal experience of an epoch passing. Do indulge me.

There's a genocide in our history we don't much talk about. It's like Turkey's willed amnesia about the Armenian massacre.
Yes, it had a pre-context of violence further west, from where traumatised refugees poured into Jammu. Still, the effects were Malthusian in scale.
There's some spinal injury epidemic going around, from the looks of it. Specialty clinic near my office always has a rush of cars outside. Good thing we have so many invertebrates in India.
