Was just walking through my neighborhood and two guys yelled out, “way to eat the pepper!” and now I’m mildly concerned,
@LeBatardShow
, that
#freedumb
will be the defining moment of my career.
I wrote this ...
For my dad, whose story is so much bigger than ALS.
For me, to make sense of the sadness.
For my mom, sister and wife, for everything.
And for all families who find themselves in these words.
@PlayersTribune
In the last two years, I’ve spoken to hundreds of student-athletes who desperately want to create more space w/in sports to discuss anxiety & depression. Every athletic department should be having this conversation.
If you’re hurting, please tell someone. Please stay.
Just a quick not to everyone who loves
@LeBatardShow
and supports the things the show supports: THANK YOU. We’ve raised $112k for
@iamalsorg
so they can keep working to put daylight between disease and outcome. cc:

#FREEDUMB
One last thing: Yes, BG has been in custody in Russia for ~three weeks. Of course, key people here have known. So why wasn't it made public? For BG's sake, essentially. They've been trying to fix it quietly, and get her home. A media firestorm does not necessarily help her.
We did it for everyone fighting for their lives with ALS, and for those who love people who are, and we did it for
#FreeDumb
, because
@LeBatardShow
and those who listen are AMAZING, but I am never touching another hot pepper.
@iamalsorg
@tomhaberstroh
(Hi, dad.)
I have an idea. If
@LeBatardShow
listeners get OFF THE LOOKING GLASS to 1K ratings by end of week, I'll fly down to Miami after Thanksgiving for a 3-point shooting contest: me vs.
@AC__305
. (Rules TBD, tho indoor court a must.)
What say you,
@LeBatardShow
? cc:
@jessica_smetana
Sitting here stunned at the BG news. About five years ago, I went to Yekaterinburg (~1K miles east of Moscow) to tell this story about BG & Taurasi playing for UMMC, the club BG was again playing for this year. I'm linking it here to offer context. /1
For me, ESPN was not a place where I could fully be myself, but that's already changed at
#MeadowlarkMedia
-- in ways that are serious, and in other ways, like deconstructing milkshakes and dudes who wear NBA jerseys to play pick-up, that are profound.
#SouthBeachSessions
Dan is joined by
@katefagan3
to officially welcome her to
#MeadowlarkMedia
. They discuss her new book "All the Colors Came Out" which is about her relationship with her father and how it changed in the last year of his life.
🎙
one day I will write about the women in sports media who police other women in sports media and (oh, the irony!) judge them without actually listening to or reading their work
Former Notre Dame coach Muffet McGraw said on a podcast released on Wednesday that ESPN is "Connecticut's network" and that there is "absolutely complete bias there."
Honestly please go tell 20-year-old me (in 2003) that in 2023 I would narrate a
@CUBuffsWBB
season opening video and that later that night we'd destroy the No. 1 team in the country.
#GoBuffs
-- really feeling like I contributed to this win.
I’m thinking about my friend Kate Fagan today.
@katefagan3
.
Earlier this year Kate went public with her father Chris’ battle with ALS -and her battle with his battle. This week, Chris’ fight came to its end. But the fight goes on.
Some thoughts here on grief and support 1/
So the
@nyliberty
have waived
@Layshiac
. Couple things on that: 1. WHAAAAAAAT? Has any other
@WNBA
player had to prove their worth time after time after time. Baffled at the move. 2. Every other team should RUN, not walk, to sign
@Layshiac
.
Also,
@jessica_smetana
and I do this really great show together for
@LeBatardShow
. Of course, in transparency: we obviously make it mostly for the men, so they think we're cool.
If you haven’t already listened to the first season of
@jessica_smetana
and
@katefagan3
’s show OTLG, do it.
Beautifully produced, funny, and examines biases that impact the coverage and consideration of women in sports in a way that’s support important
A little personal news: I'll be writing a selection of pieces for Sports Illustrated this coming year. I'm excited to tell stories for such an iconic brand and get back into the sports world.
@SInow
If, during this epic 24-hour
@LeBatardShow
, we raise $44,444.44 for
@iamalsorg
, then
@tomhaberstroh
&
@gregcote
will eat a Carolina Reaper on air. (If we raise $44 mil, I'll CONSIDER.)

Let's go,

Off The Looking Glass: Meadowlark's Kate Fagan will host this mag. style podcast, launching 10/12. Show will include a mix of interviews, skits and discussions that consider an alternative historical point of view on culture, as well as women’s sports.
Not on here much anymore, but just wanted to say: thanks to everyone who listened to
#OTLG
over the last two+ years.
@jessica_smetana
and I LOVED making it and did some fun, cool stuff and shared some under-told stories from history. Hopefully y'all laughed and learned a little.
1. Really feeling the overlapping demos of dudes shitting on
@wnba
w/ out watching it & dudes shitting on this article w/out reading it.
2. Haven’t spent much time on here the last two years, so I guess I really cannonball’d in writing about the W.
If the NWSL story, and the gymnastics story before it, disgust you, here's an actual action (or non-action) item so you can help shift the culture: don't sh*t on women's sports. That's it. That's the ask.
A thing I keep hearing people say: when will all these sexual assault stories stop, it’s exhausting.
A thing sexual predators rely on: the fatigue, and distraction, of otherwise decent people.
At first blush it was cool seeing big companies swooping in & dunking on the
@ncaa
. But, ya know, it's kinda more of the same. What's *actually* needed are brands investing on the front end to platform women, not brands platforming themselves on the backs of an unjust model.
I don't know about you,
@tomhaberstroh
, but this is the biggest font my name has ever been in and I'm ready to disappoint. Let's get it
@LeBatardShow
!
Chatted with
@mPinoe
&
@S10Bird
for
@LeBatardShow
’s Mystery Crate about their experiences and insight from inside of sports — and how they’re fighting to leave a better world for the next generation:
This is definitely my finest work.
@tomhaberstroh
and I play douche or no-douche after eating habaneros WHOLE. And we do this in honor of
@LG4Day
and all those affected by ALS.
#LouGehrigDay
A few things happened here:
1. I admit that I am terrified of Kim Mulkey (and that she wanted me fired from ESPN).
2. That I will always hit on 16 against a 10, always.
3. I claim (kind of) that my sneaker game is stronger than
@shannonsharpe
's.
@katefagan3
. I want to say that I hate
#ALS
. But I’d hate even more to see you go through what
@tomhaberstroh
went through.
My recommendation is if we raise $100k, you are off the hook.
@LeBatardShow
do you agree? You actually have to redeem yourself from killing mom.
@laurawags
@minakimes
In the long run, I think the more productive thought here would be: hmmm, let me do some self-examination about why I sent out these bullshit tweets to begin with.
After two years of work, HOOP MUSES is out today. And here are some thoughts after immersing myself in the often-buried history of the (women's) game and why telling these stories matters.
Around men’s sports, we've created a mythology. We’ve created lore and legend.
All this to say: in reporting stories on W players in both China & Russia, the tacit agreement was always that the team (outside of some egregious offense, of course) would allow their players to generally live as they had in the U.S. That's gone now & BG is paying the price. /5
WNBA All-Star

has filed a lawsuit against University of California, alleging sexual assault by longtime athletic dep. employee Mohamed Muqtar. Muqtar is named as a defendant and suit claims negligence against Cal.

Did you know 50% of Americans don’t know what disease the Ice Bucket Challenge was for?,
90% can’t name a single organization working to

?,
And 60% don’t know ALS is always fatal?
Shockingly, 80 years after Lou Gehrig died, we STILL have an awareness issue.

update: trailer for OFF THE LOOKING GLASS is live. Think of this as the Reese's Peanut Butter Cup of podcasts: sweet & salty, coveted, stylish, timeless, etc.

I was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Jim Holleran, dad of Madison. Without him & his commitment to helping others, WHAT MADE MADDY RUN wouldn't exist.
If her story moved you, consider helping the Holleran family during this difficult time:
