Laughed till it hurt. Rose petals? Will they fall on the migrants walking home or on ambulances carrying patients to hospital? Or on the empty streets lined by pan-beating families in their balconies? Clowns!
You know the beautiful thing about all that's happened these last few days at
@WestlandBooks
? Almost every single author my colleagues and I called responded instantly with 'What about you? Are you ok? We'll talk about the books later.' And that's why publishing is home and hope.
It's been a surreal day, only just found my way to

You know how they say publishers are gatekeepers? Walk into any bookstore in Delhi and you'd know that the entire system is geared towards gatekeeping. Only English-language books, mostly bestsellers, well-known writers and big brands. Bubble within bubble within bubble.
Gives me goosebumps just looking at this poster. That we got here, that these books are ours again to love and sell, with all the imprints in place, that we are a team again. I am not a believer, but today I want to believe.
A new meaning to ministering. 'she did not post a word about the escalation with Pakistan or the IAF pilot’s capture or safe return. She only retweeted two tweets pertaining to the National Youth Parliament and the launch of the Khelo India app.'

Genocide can take many forms, I realise. It doesn't have to be violence on the streets or armed men pulling people out of their homes. It can be about oxygen. That thing we took for granted. Until now.
'Please stay well', I find myself ending every email and message with. Please don't fall ill, please don't suffer, please don't have to go into hospital, please don't be alone in your grief, please let's claw our way out of this unending night.
Powerful call by PM

on social discipline. As always, raised national morale and motivated India. Also characteristically gave practical suggestions to the youth.
Follow protocols, stay safe.
India will come through.
Overheard a heated discussion on rising prices and felt compelled to say, hey, how about us? When prices go up, books are probably the first strike-off from shopping wishlists. Except text books and early learning books for children, perhaps.1/9

when I was eight and in bed with chickenpox. Can still remember the magic of that afternoon. Of not minding the isolation at all because it meant a book a day from the library and hours with George, my very first girl crush. Hindsight not changing that!
Vinay was the first to leave us. Since then, there have been so many losses in our small world of publishing. Anil and Shashi, Subhadra, Mr Malhotra and Mr Shanbag. Thinking of them all this morning, and their families, with a prayer and shared grief over what might have been.
I must have read two manuscripts a day every day these past two weeks. Can't help wishing there were at least ten more English-language publishers in India so we could all publish more strongly and better.
It's kept us immersed through several rounds of reading & edits, a gradual movement from incomprehension & inadequacy to a sense of delight & achievement. See that spine?1000+ pages & magnificent in its telling of the life of the

The sadness of this Sunday morning. 'I say with humility to my co-religionists that we have no power, no agency, no spaces left for protest. Those spaces are fast disappearing for all who believe in resisting the establishment.'

If you are interested in taking a first step into publishing, or know someone who is, this may be of interest. The editorial office is in south Delhi, do keep that in mind if applying.
Among our finest is this book by
@RevatiLaul

With paper and other costs spiralling, the price of books is bound to go up, but will that see a drop in buying? Is hardback publishing going to get even harder? Will ebooks become a more attractive proposition for readers? Much to think about these days.
Been waiting a long while to say, IT"S HERE! And thank you, sir, for the privilege. Anyone who has read and admired

Woke up with a prayer on my lips after god only knows how long. So much sadness and trouble in the world and in my beloved Kerala. Building more temples doesn't seem to appease those who really do control this universe.
And then there's

I've had the good fortune of working with. Realised again how brilliant and special each one of them is. And so will remain in happy parochial state for some more time today:)
Some days I look at my schedule of calls and meetings and marvel. Writers, lit agents, colleagues, talking about books and more, published and unpublished, heard and seen, or soon to be. What joy, especially when, you know...

The Colonisation of Kanhaiya Kumar
Thousands of bright poor youth waste their best years in the luxury streams of humanities conned by a system that distributes prestige. Kanhaiya was saved by one of the two things that save India's smart poor. My latest:
Even the weather is beginning to remind me of our supreme leader. Thunder, lightning, woke up with huge anticipation of rain, and phoooos, a few drops of water and off it went to fool another lot of gullible folk.
This book still has me in thrall 4 years after reading the ms. Japanese invasion of the Andamans is the most horrific, least written about chapter in our history. And Uzma's characters are unforgettable, as is her account of life in that infamous prison.

Most Indian men and women have had fewer opportunities than those who use words like 'patriarchy'. In essence, all the talk about equality is the battle of the top 2% against the top 1%.
Another huge week with Vayuputras & Ram Chandra series rocking the charts, all six among the top ten, third week in a row. I hope every one of these readers is inspired to read more and more. On that depends the health of our industry. Hat tip
