My Twitter bio is (intentionally) useless so here's a quick intro:
Hello world! I'm Karina and I'm a creative technologist. I studied Computer Science and Human-Computer Interaction at Carnegie Mellon and spent 10 years working as a software engineer in San Francisco (1/7)
I don't understand the Twitter accounts that have 10k+ followers and don't tweet anything other than those "As a developer..." questions and weird threaded advice of how to be successful that doesn't apply to half the population
But I guess that's why I don't have 10k followers
Why do everyday Americans feel so strongly that they have to belong to a political party?
Wouldn't it make a lot more sense for all of us to be party-less and then just listen to what's being offered and vote instead of pledging allegiance like we do with sports teams?

I could go on!
First day of classes is the perfect excuse to try out some new fashion. Gotta say, this is quickly becoming my new favorite shirt.
Gotta start the school year right, you know?
I met a 19 year old student today who guessed I was 21. Then guessed 25. Then guessed 23.
I'm 32.
When I told her she was totally shocked and thought I was joking.
This whole interaction was the best compliment I could have possibly received. 🤣
Merry Christmas everyone! 🎄
Wearing my favorite Christmas outfit and celebrating with my whole family.
Hope your day is filled with joy and good food :)

Why would you buy a new chair if your currently chair is perfectly fine and can be easily fixed or reupholstered?
Seems like a waste of money and wasteful in general
What a weird time we're living in.
More than half of my friends are (f)unemployed, either by choice or layoff. Half are in a hurry to find a new job but can't find one, and half are too burnt out to even conceive of working again soon.
Times have changed since the early 2010s.

👆This.
My CS degree was 70% mathematics, 20% coding, and 10% other (e.g. technical writing, entrepreneurship, etc).
It was hard, and I sucked at it, but it helped me develop a logical thinking pattern that makes me an excellent software developer/engineer today.
Today was my best friend's wedding!
She's a huge fantasy nerd, so I surprised her with blue wings on all the bridesmaids and white wings for her. We followed our fairy queen around all night with our wings on.
She loved it. More pictures to come :)
Random opinion:
Women should able to say when they have cramps. Not fair that headaches and stomachaches are on the table, but something that happens to us every month isn't.
I freely admit it to male colleagues, but I still sometimes get funny looks like it's weird that I do.
It's official! I'm done with all my coursework and thesis! My presentation was a big success and I caused one of the staff members to cry from laughing (always a good sign)
Now all that's left to do is graduate :)
The university finally edited the video of my RFID light up jacket project!
As much as I hate myself on camera, this turned out pretty well! Straight to the portfolio site.

Here's a little known secret coming from a software engineer with a decade of work experience and a computer science degree:
Literally no one knows what they're doing, and if they say they do, there's a lot they don't know. Tech is like life in that way.
@MarketPalmer_
I'm 32 and found all of that knowledge to be useful in my life. It's not about the specific knowledge but about learning how to learn.
About 1/5 of my friends from high school ended up as chemists or biologists so they would agree as well as they were inspired by those lessons.
So far, I find my 30s feeling as confusing and aimless as my teenage years but with a new dread of my own mortality and a sea of regrets.
Those in their mid 30s or older: Does it get any better or does it just keep piling on? I miss my 20s haha😅

I've seen more cases of breaking the bro code than the other way around... But it really just depends on the people. Can't generalize this stuff.

I'm actually kind of surprised at the amenities at TikTok given that it is a Chinese company. Are the offices also like that in China?
H-o-l-y shit.
Crash and burned the last couple of weeks but my last final is officially done with!
Now let's just pass out for a month. I'm starting now 😂
New haircut!
I'm reserving judgment until I rebleach and redye but it definitely feels weird to not have an undercut. The feathery layers look cute though, I think!

No shit our country is practically the size of the EU
Don't look at just country. It would make sense to compare California to Germany more then the US to most other countries.
Ok now you know my life story! You must be insane to have reached this point!
This was a very professional sounding intro but I usually post in a silly voice.
Expect art, random facts, tech stuff, and articles about tech and psychology.
Welcome and don't be a stranger :) (7/7)
My classmates and I are doing a 100 day challenge where we each commit to developing a daily creative practice over 100 days.
I'm going to do 100 days of writing (either code or English) and posting something each day. Wish me luck in hitting 100 days!
I keep arguing that I'm no longer in the tech industry/ no longer a software engineer ("I'm a creative technologist!"), yet I have 3 IDEs and Unity open right now and am writing in 4 languages.
Who am I kidding.
@felixleezd
I'm glad I'm not the only one trolling on LinkedIn.
This is amazing. They're all so well written. I'm proud of his Roku remote typing accuracy haha
@Theholisticpsyc
What exactly is the definition of helicopter parenting?
Helicopter parents protect you from the outside world but not from their own emotional manipulation and unreasonable expectations. I've seen that result more in a fear of failure, not entitlement, in my experience
Working on my cow udder game.
Making a physical controller that is a rubber cow udder you squeeze to a Rhythm Heaven Fever inspired rhythm game. Decided to make a countertop mini cow that acts as an espresso machine.
Was thinking of having the screen under the udder. (1/2)
I'm kind of starting to use Twitter and a place to post projects and process pics. I'm surprised by the number of people who've responded so positively!
Would anyone be interested in seeing some past projects as well when I don't have anything tangible to show at the moment?
Just applied to a few jobs at Adobe.
In retrospect, I should have submitted a cover letter with this picture from when I was an intern for Acrobat with my intern friends and the CEO of Adobe with no other context 🤣
@Lindsey_design
What's something you're really good at? How did you get to be good at it?
I'm sure innate ability has something to do with it, but most of us got good at things by good ol fashion practice! No one is born a good programmer.
And remember...
Did you know that document.getElementsBy... are live updating lists while document.querySelectorAll is not?
TIL this after finding duplicates of elements in my DOM because the list was live updating during iteration as I was adding elements.
That's all. My PSA of the day.
I love how when I post about creative technology and weird art I make, I tend to stay stagnant or even lose followers, but as soon as I complain about tech, post tech memes, or post code samples, I gain followers quickly.
Y'all need to get a life outside this bubble, man 🤣
"Make an absurd phone add-on" the professor said.
So I made a lipstick applicator for clowns on-the-go in the subway/in an Uber/etc.
(this is why I was up so late so often the last week 🤡)
Got a new gig to work on a marketing site.
The client's current marketing site is written in Laravel.
I haven't written PHP in probably 15 years.
Wish me luck!
Sometimes I wish I lacked self awareness.
People who lack self awareness seem a lot happier in life. I'm tired of being on edge and in a constant freak-out mode 🤣
My mood for the week.
Drawing on my hand while waiting for deployments and just procrastinating 🤣
Getting pretty good at drawing this little dude from memory... Not sure what that says about my life
At the Currents New Media festival in Santa Fe, this kid played my cow game 4 times and his parents had to drag him away
I think I found my

5 years later and this is still my favorite picture of me at the dojo.
Still on a quest for a better one with the fun pants, but honestly not sure I'll ever get there 😅
One of the scariest things about being a senior+/founding engineer is making decisions like what stack or tools to use.
If you don't choose wisely, you drag everyone through hell and the company will be cursing your name out for years to come even after you leave 🤣
@shoe0nhead
As a woman, I find all of these to be compliments with slight problematic spins.
That said, it's all about intention. Coming from well intended people, they're all compliments I'd be happy to hear and give thanks for.
The problem isn't the words it's the people who say them
Dude I hate these branding trends.
Twitter was part of that era with cute animal logos. The Twitter bird. The Docker whale. The GitHub Octocat.
Then there was the flat mono or dual color brands. You know the ones.
Now everything is turning black and slick. The Twitter HQ was
Uhh oh...I trained a voice on ElevenLabs on my friend's wife's very kawaii voice and finally got python working on my machine.
Soon to go on a Pi 4.
This is getting crazy 😅
Due to my recent addiction to Twitter, I've somehow become one of those people that goes to bed and wakes up with their phone in hand even though I've used an alarm clock for years.
Going to leave my phone outside of my room for bedtime starting tonight.
Wish me luck.
I love trying to explain to my non-SF tech-adjacent friends just how entrenched tech is in SF.
They think I'm joking when I say bus ads have curl commands on them 🤣
