Word on the street is that Election Day is coming soon to Philadelphia y'all. Here's what you need to know: And if you're a busy person like me, I got you.
Don’t say goodbye. Just bon voyage. A well deserved retirement for our former intrepid news director Joel McCord. Don’t fret, you’ll still see his environment news bylines

AFSCME union attorney closing argument: The question of remote work needs to go before a labor arbitrator. Work schedules can’t be changed more than one day of work as per the master CBA (collective bargaining agreement) and alternative work schedules were being bargained.
Are you a homeowner who evacuated for
#HurricaneIda
? The state is ordering all insurance companies to pay for hotel costs for those who evacuated, mandatory or not.
Now the union attorney is back to discussing their arguments. Saying the city can bargain something they aren’t mandated to do. Once the city agrees to bargain something they can’t go back.
This is not accurate information. The Times-Picayune did not file for bankruptcy. Nor did the owners of the Advocate control it when the newspaper editions were cut to 3 days a week. It’s actually the opposite. The Advocate’s owners brought 7 days of newspaper back to the region.
Everyday I remind myself that the folks who run the
@theadvocatebr
are the same ones who bankrupted the Times Picayune! So if or when you read it keep that in mind!
“I disagree with that,” said judge Sierra Thomas-Street to the city’s assertion that she should ignore a Supreme Court case. There’s a lot of attorney stuff I don’t fully understand in this back and forth I’ll be honest but I think that’s what they meant.
2020 marks 10 yrs as news reporter. Most of which I’ve written about business. I have a deep understanding of international trade, eco dev, finance, electric markets, oil, LNG, energy, defense industry, tech startups & big data. Don’t be fooled by cat memes, smart lady here.
Tech company is rapidly becoming a gatekeeper for Americans trying to access government services online from the IRS to Social Security and unemployment insurance. The question is: Should a for-profit company even be in that role?
Some bittersweet news y'all. I'm leaving Louisiana in a few weeks. So much gratitude to everyone for sharing their stories with me. Going to miss my fellow news reporters

Dear former

Big news! I'm joining

in Baltimore as a digital news editor and producer on June 1. Absolutely stoked for such a great opportunity to work with a talented team.
“You need to more than say it, show it,” said the judge about the city’s closing argument that there was no bargaining and that it’s just a management right.
This makes me so sad, our local hospitals are using digital billboards to let folks know the real-time status of people who are hospitalized with COVID-19 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
Do you live in the Curtis Bay community in South Baltimore? Don't be shy. I'll be on the scene of the environmental protest on Saturday December 17th interviewing folks. For ease of identification in the cold, I'll be wearing my NPR scarf.

The Philadelphia city hall courtroom is packed for the hearing where a judge may decide whether Mayor Cherelle Parker’s return to office mandate may be stopped for thousands of union workers. *sorry no photos
Will we ever collectively discuss that some folks have the time to be successful? The ability to ignore any other responsibilities and external or internal stressors? And that access to time is the real key to success? Grit is totally a thing, but it’s not the only thing.
You should absolutely judge your local newspaper by its election and voting coverage. I’m so freakin’ proud of how comprehensive our voting news is in the print edition.

There's a popular phrase in
#journalism
known as 'speaking truth to power'. As someone who has spent a lot of time both inside & outside major metros, this is what I've learned. Avoid sympathy narratives, help develop public empathy.
Still waiting for hearing to resume. Something I think about is that no matter what everyone will have to work together when this is over, what is that workplace dynamic going to be like?
Dearest Maryland, grab your coffee or tea mug folks. This is a long read. A deep dive. But worth your time. The Blueprint for Maryland’s Future is law, but what does that mean for the average student?

I typically encourage reader feedback. But not like this. Please don't try to anonymously call and threaten me to change a story that is factual, accurate and newsworthy. I always identify myself. You should too, it's a sign of respect you obviously didn't have for me.

Please refrain plagarizing your fellow news reporters. This means copy and pasting news stories word-for-word is not how journalists work. This has happened twice now with bankruptcy records stories with two different competing news outlets. Come on y'all.

Tesla's "autopilot" is marketing. It has lateral cruise control so you can stay in the lane. I have been inside a level 4 autonomous vehicle, it's not the same thing.
FYI: There’s now several top city of Philadelphia staffers in the courtroom from the mayors office. Most of whom came within the last hour. Hoping city will provide anything on the record after this hearing is over.
She asked during the job interview if the city would ever go back to in person. She was told no. She started out 3 days remote and 2 days in the office and now it’s flipped. She’d have to get more childcare if she was forced into work 5 days a week.
Remember the Burnside manufacturing site poised to shutter in August? It did, despite state & federal incentives including

It is today I remember someone who I have lost. I see him in the trees, bayous, squirrels, turtles and other critters. His kindness knew no bounds. Born with special needs and gave so much to this world. Gone at 14 years old. He would have been in his 20s these days.
