Aggressive new ICE raids start today as Catholics & other Christians hear the story of the Good Samaritan at church. As MLK noted the priest & Levite ask: “If I help this man, what will happen TO ME?” while the Samaritan asks, “If I don’t help this man, what will happen TO HIM?”

This comment confuses Christ’s teachings on personal charity with socialist collectivism. A good Christian shows generosity by giving to charities directly, volunteering, and tithing. A “democratic socialist” signals their morality by demanding others share their wealth.

Jesuits do a lot of things wrong, but one thing we do right is that no matter how high a position you hold--a provincial, even superior general--when you finish your term you go right back into the ranks of parish priests, missionaries, teachers, etc.

I think this severely damaged US church's credibility & may explain why the first thing Francis said about abortion as pope was: "We cannot insist only on issues related to abortion, gay marriage & contraception... it's not necessary to talk about these issues all the time."

The Catholic Church is at its best when we’re really close to people who are poor and suffering—and when sisters are running the show.

My brother Emilio Travieso, SJ, celebrating Mass for 4th Sunday of Advent in Port au Prince today. He grew up in Miami, did undergrad at Harvard, joined the Jesuits, & has spent most of his Jesuit life in Haiti. An exemplary priest & human being. #BeAJesuit

This is so dumb. The Catholic Church is 1 billion people, 230,000 parishes, 150,000 schools worldwide. My parish, for example, is taking in a fraction of what we're spending on salaries for our 8 lay employees & for feeding 100+ desperate families our neighborhood

Despite having billions in cash and other funds, U.S. Roman Catholic dioceses took billions more from an emergency relief program for small businesses slammed by the virus, @AP investigation shows. Church officials say they needed the money to save jobs.

Last night, one of our wonderful SOLT sisters in Belize died of Covid. Sr. María of Merciful Love Medina, age 35. She was such a joyful person & I never remembering seeing her without a smile on her face. Please keep her, her family & the SOLT community in your prayers. RIP

Is he referring to the bit where Jesus says: “‘I was hungry & you gave me no food, thirsty & you gave me no drink, a stranger & you did not welcome me.... Truly, as you did not do it to the least, you did not do it to me.’ And so these shall be sent away to eternal punishment.”?

A Salvadoran refugee whose brother was disappeared during the Civil War came up after Mass tonight to say she wept thru the entire canonization liturgy. She says that, for the first time, she feels able to forgive the men who killed him: "Now I see: light triumphs over darkness."

Kindof stunning how many Christians have been catechized to believe serving the poor & marginalized is a nice thing we should do rather than an essential demand of discipleship & at the very heart of the proclamation of the Gospel.

I deplore the fact that a good many bishops and priests neglect their essential mission, which is the proclamation of the gospel of Jesus, in order to get involved with sociopolitical issues like the environment, migrants or the homeless. Taking an interest in these issues shows
