Your tax dollars at work. Military helicopters descended on protesters in Washington, D.C., as a 'show of force’ creating wind force equivalent to a tropical storm.

mystical Money Train in action. (Seen it pass by a handful of times over the years.) The train carries armed officers and it goes from Metro station to station, collecting money deposited in fare boxes. The whole operation took about 2 mins.
Last week I left the Washington Post after nearly 4.5 years covering transit. Why would I leave my dream workplace? To go home. I spent the first half of my life in Colorado, and the last 2 decades outside of it. It was time — something I’ve wanted badly since the pandemic. 1/

National demonstrations for gun control led by teens are being planned on March 24 and a walkout on April 20, not immediately. Strategic. It means unlike the awareness & concern that surrounded other mass tragedies — attention on this one won’t go away quickly & quietly.
Shocking story: Metro proposes to cut weekend Metrorail service completely, eliminate 3,800 jobs and slash hundreds of bus routes to meet a $500M deficit next fiscal year

"This is a big breakthrough for a lot of people," Trump said of the criminal justice reform bill known as the First Step Act, which he said he will sign and urged Congress to push forward. "Go out there and see if you can get that done. ... I'm waiting. I'm waiting with a pen."
Spectacularly bad lead & frame for this story. Of course it was unlocked on the day of worship. Same with churches on Sunday. That’s how the congregation gets in. That’s not unusual, an oversight or deserving of emphasizing the contrast of locked doors on eventless days in story.
A gunman who expressed hatred of Jews exploited doors that were unlocked for worship to target a Pittsburgh synagogue, killing 11 people and wounding six.
There were nearly 100 people waiting to ride the first official passenger service train on the Silver Line extension at the new Ashburn Metro station. They all cheered at 1:40 pm when Metro workers let them through the faregates. The train left on time to cheers onboard.

The DC Council just voted 13-0 in its committee of the whole to waive fares on all Metrobus rides in the city. That leaves just a final vote later today, which should be a formality as it’s on the consent agenda. Free bus service in dc would begin July 1.
What will I do next? I have no plans to leave journalism & will be looking for opportunities to get back to telling stories, writing more about people & helping younger journalists pursue their dreams the way many helped me. 3/
