(1/2) @lamarr_lemee wrote a great article in the @latimes about the gun policy consensus @JustinTPickett and I found. Americans are more united than polarization would lead you to believe!

(1/6) ๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿงต Research Alert! We uncover a surprising consensus: from Republicans to Democrats, gun owners or not, Americans donโ€™t want to live near neighbors with AR-15s or insecurely stored guns. @JustinTPickett

@JohnHolbein1 Have seen this in action in sociology and criminology! Reviewers and editors dislike the ambiguity of a null effect. So, they vacillate between believing that 1) your study operationalized theory incorrectly, and/or 2) the theory you tested may be incorrect. High bar to clear!

@GunResearch Thank you so much for this support! I am already working hard to rendering my research useful for our understanding of gun ownership and gun policy. @Social_Ecology @JustinTPickett @TaraDWarner @cekubrin @Tanaro1 @ProfEmilyOwens

@JessicaGillool1 @DThacher Great paper, and I hope for that demand diversion! Policy-makers and scholars often treat calls as a good proxy for crime (e.g., Warner & Pierce, 1993:497). @cekubrin and I find partisan racial effects on desire to call the police; calls are not neutral!

@jdawncarlson Yeah! The comment reinforced your description of guns as a 'sure' object to confront the 'unsure' social order: the student framed the gun as a source of confidence to confront ever-more-precarious times: midnight, 1am, 130am, even 2am!

@MarioLuisSmall @victorerikray A social pattern in which a laws, policies, and practices produce racially inequitable outcomes that personal animus cannot explain.

@chrisuggen @cekubrin Thank you! Calls for service initiate most police interventions, so we are very excited to interrogate them: how and why people 'see something, say something' matters!

@davidyamane @ZushaElinson @cammcwhirter Yup! Most research works backwards from people who selected into ownership (e.g. existing AR-15 owners), so I'm always on the lookout alternative perspectives. Here, maybe perspectives from people who helped popularize the AR-15.

(4/6) In Study 2, we used a preregistered picture-based factorial vignette experiment (n=2,098 respondents) to uncover universal aversion to insecure gun storage.

(2/6) America is deeply divided on gun policies. However, we show that the polarization that impedes national attempts to reduce gun violence dissipates when the focus is on individualsโ€™ immediate environments and daily lives. Preregistration, code, data:

@AVPapachristos @JustinTPickett It seems plausible to define a population of violent gang sets (i.e. "not connected to the [un]treated gangs through rivalries or alliances" - pg. 230) as Braga et al. 2014 did. If that is plausible, is RCT of a subset with FD implausible?

@davidyamane ๐Ÿ‘ Kohn was also the first to demonstrate the responsible vs irresponsible gun owner identity bifurcation: โ€œthe shooters with whom I spoke attempt to differentiate themselves from those they consider โ€˜amateurs,โ€™ people who do not take gun ownership and handling seriously.โ€ (77)

@davidyamane @ASAnews I'd add two points: 1) Shapira and Simon (2018) 'Learning to Need a Gun' samples '46 people who regularly carry guns' and firearms training schools, largely in Texas: the sampling 'searchlight' illuminates an aspect (not totality) of habitus formation 1/2

@davidyamane @ASAnews 2) looking to childhood (Schutten et al. 2021) or broader samples (Sola 2021), you see heterogeneous effects: there are many routes for guns to be more than just tools. So a singular 'learning to need a gun' may be too teleological 2/2

@chrisuggen @cekubrin FYI: the low-severity scenario is an audio vignette which describes two young men arguing next to a car with its alarm going off.

(5/6) Insecure storage is the best-studied risk factor for firearm injury and death. We hope this research can help bridge the gap in the national debate on gun control and community safety.
