Baltic Germans have to be one of the groups with the highest population-to-significant-person ratios in the world. This is what happens when the Eastern spirit of the Kalevic-Finnic nobles mixes with the Western spirit of the Teutonic knights.

Some Estonian nationalists in the 20th century continued to entertain this idea. In 1919 among the candidates for the national flag of Estonia was a yellow flag with a red sun in the middle, which was supposed to represent the "yellow or Mongolian race" of the Estonians.

The idea that Estonians have lived in Estonia for thousands of years is surprisingly new. According to Æstonia Rediviva, a chronicle written by Baltic German David Werner in the 17th c, Estonians travelled and waged war around the ancient world, finally settling on the Vistula...

Say what you will about the idea of Finns being Asian, but in my experience all the Fingolia memes have done more to promote Finnish (and Estonian) pride and nationalism on the internet than almost anything else. They turned a previous weak spot into an absolute strength.

You might've seen pictures of these Ob-Ugric totems before. They are not totems to gods, however, but creatures called menkws. According to Ob-Ugric mythology, in an age before man, the supreme god Num-Toorum created menkws in a failed attempt to make humans.

Interesting that in the 16th century Western historians considered Maris to be a Muslim people. "The people called Cheremis live in the forests near Nizhny Novgorod. They have their own language and follow the teachings of Mohammed." (Sigismund von Herbenstein, 1526)

Carolingian sword from the 12th-13th centuries found in Novosibirsk oblast, Western Siberia. It's 96cm long and has Latin inscriptions dedicated to Virgin Mary on both sides. The sword was made in Western Europe and most likely made it's way to Ugrians through Novgorod and Volga.

Hakan Rotmwrt talked about this, how farmer languages use "f" and "v" while hunter-gatherer languages use "w". He was proven right once again. Even in Finno-Ugric languages, the farming Finno-Permians use "v", while the hunter-herder Ob-Ugrians and Samoyeds use "w".

The Indo-European Afanasievo culture has always fascinated me. It was far east in the Altai mtns already in 3300BC, far away from other IEs. It was also the first IE culture that Finno-Ugrians made contact with. What's more, they are considered to be the ancestors of Tocharians.

Anyone who refers to Northern areas with "up there" and Southern with "down there" is gravely mistaken. It is obvious that North is down and South is up, to us Finno-Ugrians it is common knowledge. In my mother tongue the word for "north" and "bottom" is one and the same - põhi.

In traditional Nenets society the clergy was composed of the shamans, tadjebja in Nenets, related to the Finnic teadja/tietäjä. Not anyone could become a shaman, it was a role passed down genetically and was for men only. Furthermore, shamans required many special qualities.

Damn this made a lot of people mad. Tbh I had no idea so many people have beef with not only Baltic Germans but also Estonians?? Or is it another case of people on this site having extreme neuroticism

Baltic Germans have to be one of the groups with the highest population-to-significant-person ratios in the world. This is what happens when the Eastern spirit of the Kalevic-Finnic nobles mixes with the Western spirit of the Teutonic knights.

THREAD ON BELTS IN ESTONIAN TRADITION Belts were one of most important pieces of traditional clothing in Estonia, worn by men and women of all ages. A belt is called vöö in North-Estonia, vüü in South. A thinner belt is called pael in North, puidik or puudõ in South.

Trees adorned with scarves and rags, a common sight all across Southern Siberia, from Altai to Transbaikal and beyond (think Koreans had a similar practice?)

The aišon is a headdress traditionally worn by married Udmurt women. It is made up of a cone decorated with an ornamented shawl and silver coins. The aišon's been worn by Udmurts since atleast the 18th c. Russian, Mari, Mordvin and Kazakh women have also worn similar headdresses.

Tonight's drawing, men leaving off to war. I draw landscape/large-scale shots very rarely so I decided to challenge myself a bit. The scale and perspective is definitely goofy here and there, and the fort doesn't look nearly as grand as I originally wanted it to.
