Baltic Germans have to be one of the groups with the highest population-to-significant-person ratios in the world. This is what happens when the Eastern spirit of the Kalevic-Finnic nobles mixes with the Western spirit of the Teutonic knights.
Artists, show me your most popular piece
I think this one got the most likes. It's definitely one of my best works. I wanna do more in this style, but haven't had much time to draw.
Some Estonian nationalists in the 20th century continued to entertain this idea. In 1919 among the candidates for the national flag of Estonia was a yellow flag with a red sun in the middle, which was supposed to represent the "yellow or Mongolian race" of the Estonians.
The idea that Estonians have lived in Estonia for thousands of years is surprisingly new. According to Æstonia Rediviva, a chronicle written by Baltic German David Werner in the 17th c, Estonians travelled and waged war around the ancient world, finally settling on the Vistula...
Say what you will about the idea of Finns being Asian, but in my experience all the Fingolia memes have done more to promote Finnish (and Estonian) pride and nationalism on the internet than almost anything else. They turned a previous weak spot into an absolute strength.
You might've seen pictures of these Ob-Ugric totems before. They are not totems to gods, however, but creatures called menkws. According to Ob-Ugric mythology, in an age before man, the supreme god Num-Toorum created menkws in a failed attempt to make humans.
Interesting that in the 16th century Western historians considered Maris to be a Muslim people.
"The people called Cheremis live in the forests near Nizhny Novgorod. They have their own language and follow the teachings of Mohammed." (Sigismund von Herbenstein, 1526)
German caricatures of 'Northern Barbarians' who fought in the Swedish army, 1632.
Sami with the scimitar on the left, Livonian on horseback with a bow, Irishman and Scot with the rifles.
The Kazym war (1931-1934) started because a Russian woman entered a Khanty holy site and was killed and sacrificed. Women entering holy sites is strictly forbidden in Khanty and Mansi religion.
THREAD ON FINNO-UGRIC CREATION MYTHS
Creation myths all around the Finno-Ugric world are very similar. Almost all of them are diver myths, sharing similarities to creation myths in other parts of the world, such as Eastern Europe, Siberia, East Asia and North America.
Carolingian sword from the 12th-13th centuries found in Novosibirsk oblast, Western Siberia. It's 96cm long and has Latin inscriptions dedicated to Virgin Mary on both sides. The sword was made in Western Europe and most likely made it's way to Ugrians through Novgorod and Volga.
Excellent reconstructions of 10th century Meryan (Volga-Finnic) clothing by Katerina Lomteva. Some of the best reconstructions of historic Finno-Ugric clothes I've seen.
This building is called labaz in Russian, borrowed from the Khanty word lopas. Built commonly by many Finno-Ugric groups such as the Samis, Komis, Khanties and Mansis. They were dotted all around the forest, used as storages for hunting items and pelts.
Hakan Rotmwrt talked about this, how farmer languages use "f" and "v" while hunter-gatherer languages use "w". He was proven right once again. Even in Finno-Ugric languages, the farming Finno-Permians use "v", while the hunter-herder Ob-Ugrians and Samoyeds use "w".
In honor of
#WorldAnthropologyDay
, learn more about how the spread of agriculture didn’t just change our diets—it altered our jaws as well, making it easy to pronounce "f"s and "v"s and opening a whole new world of words.
@NewsfromScience
The Indo-European Afanasievo culture has always fascinated me. It was far east in the Altai mtns already in 3300BC, far away from other IEs. It was also the first IE culture that Finno-Ugrians made contact with. What's more, they are considered to be the ancestors of Tocharians.
Anyone who refers to Northern areas with "up there" and Southern with "down there" is gravely mistaken. It is obvious that North is down and South is up, to us Finno-Ugrians it is common knowledge. In my mother tongue the word for "north" and "bottom" is one and the same - põhi.
Interesting arctic snack: called potym hul in Khanty or kinjui kalja in Nenets. Shavings cut from frozen fish or sometimes meat. Eaten by natives all around Siberia.
Today's drawing, following up on the last one. Can't say I like it as much, but I really like the contrast between the cold green and the bright yellow.
In traditional Nenets society the clergy was composed of the shamans, tadjebja in Nenets, related to the Finnic teadja/tietäjä. Not anyone could become a shaman, it was a role passed down genetically and was for men only. Furthermore, shamans required many special qualities.
One of the cringiest trends on rw Twitter was the whole flamewar between "Christians" and "Pagans" that was so prevalent like 3-4 years ago. It was so obvious both sides had just converted to their respective religions and had no idea what they were doing. Crusadelarpers vs varg.
Head hõimupäeva! Happy Finno-Ugric kinship day!
I'm very proud to part of this beautiful family with such a rich history and culture. May all good things await our kin. 🙏🦢
Would yall be interested in a thread overviewing Finno-Ugric people as a whole? Going over each Finno-Ugric group, their origin and what makes them special. I imagine many of my followers could use an overview since I normally tweet about more niche topics.
Nganasans, living on the Taimyr peninsula in the Krasnoyarsk krai, are considered the be the northern-most ethnic group in the world. They speak a Samoyedic language and originally lived a nomadic hunter lifestyle, later picking up reindeer herding.
In Finno-Ugric mythology there is a race of dog-faced humans living at the edge of the world by the gate of the underworld. They are called koerakoonlased or peninukid in Estonian, pinereške in Mari. In Estonia they visited humans through caves and often caused trouble.
The myth of the dog guarding the path to the afterlife in Eurasia & Americas may date back to the Ancestral North Eurasians (ANEs) in the 20,000s BC. The dog’s name, at least to the Indo-Europeans, was “Spot”.
@arvslarv
its clear that indigenous nowadays just means "brown and primitive" but whats surprising is that people put the heavily urbanised and clearly white samis under this category
>Appear out of nowhere
>Lead an army of 20K Maris, Tatars and Udmurts against the Russians after the collapse of the Kazan khanate, invite a new khan, kill the khan, become the khan, recreate the Kazan khanate
>Disappear
Reconstructions of Iron Age Finnic swords, scabbards and a spear. It was common for Finnics of the time to adorn their weapons and tools in silver and bronze ornaments.
Few know about the importance of haplogroup N in China. N1a2 split into N1a2b and N1a2a in the Liao region. N1a2b carriers travelled west in 3000BC and founded the Finno-Ugric nations, while N1a2a went south to Yellow River, and according to geneticists, founded the Zhou dynasty.
The traditional living place of the Nenets is the mjaaq. It is built on 2 thin logs called makoda 'house spruce' which are tied together at the top. Other logs are rested on it forming a cone shape. Then a cover is tied around them sewn together from hundreds of reindeer skins.
The amount of people protecting this shameful behaviour with arguments like "this is not our business" and "let her have fun" is disgusting. People, especially leader figures, should be exemplary in private life and open, in words and thoughts, because it ALL affects your actions
A new video of Prime Minister Sanna Marin’s “party scandal” appeared in Finland today.
Seiska writes that Marin, who is married and has been in that relationship for 18 years, was seen in many questionable situations.
Iltalehti has a sound expert confirming “flour-gang”.
THREAD ON KUDYM-OŠ
Kudym-Oš is one of the most known Komi mytho-historical figures. He most likely lived around the 7th-9th centuries and is associated with the uniting of Permian lands under a unified state. He is also seen as a bringer of civilisation and new technology.
Ancient Finnic rulers used to carry scepters called kalikka or sauva. They are mentioned in Finnish folklore and were used for many purposes like rituals and commanding an army. They were made from a short wooden shaft, an intricate mace-like bronze tip and fur hanging from it.
People often underestimate the genetic and ethnic diversity of Estonians. We aren't as diverse genetically as Finns because our lack of foreign admix, but Estonia used to be the heartland of Finnics and their migrations. In fact Estonia houses traces of 5 different Finnic groups.
2 years have gone by since his passing. We should remind ourselves of his words today, they will be vital guidelines in the future. Jumalaga, Pentti Linkola!
Great map showing the genetic composition of different Scythian groups. Scythians of the Tagar and Pazyryk cultures were Samoyed-admixed. Pazyryk men carried haplogroups N1b and R1a.
Indo-Uralic? Why yes we're Baltic and Scythian
Ural-Altaic? Why yes we're Turanic, cCc kardeşim
Uralo-Siberian? Why yes we are kin to the Yukaghirs
Sino-Uralic? Why yes we have pure *NO haplo
Uralo-Japonic? Why yes we're both from Liao civ
Uralo-Dravidian? Uhhh how about no
Eastern Samis, inhabiting the Kola peninsula and the surroundings of the Inari lake. They differ quite a bit from their western counterpart in appearance. Nowadays their native speakers number only around a thousand.
First full drawing in quite some time. Picking up the pen after a while felt really refreshing honestly. I find myself with a new sense of aesthetic. Before I would usually draw black&white figure drawings but this time I put more focus on colours, background and composition.
The Enets are a small Samoyedic population of 227 (2010). They used to live on a larger area between the Taz and Turukhan rivers but now populate small pockets near the mouth of Yenisei. They live a nomadic reindeer-herder lifestyle like their kinsmen.

Damn this made a lot of people mad. Tbh I had no idea so many people have beef with not only Baltic Germans but also Estonians?? Or is it another case of people on this site having extreme neuroticism

THREAD ON BELTS IN ESTONIAN TRADITION
Belts were one of most important pieces of traditional clothing in Estonia, worn by men and women of all ages. A belt is called vöö in North-Estonia, vüü in South. A thinner belt is called pael in North, puidik or puudõ in South.
Trees adorned with scarves and rags, a common sight all across Southern Siberia, from Altai to Transbaikal and beyond (think Koreans had a similar practice?)
The aišon is a headdress traditionally worn by married Udmurt women. It is made up of a cone decorated with an ornamented shawl and silver coins. The aišon's been worn by Udmurts since atleast the 18th c. Russian, Mari, Mordvin and Kazakh women have also worn similar headdresses.
I put my name and bio into bing ai
This is insane lmao. Looks like one of those Vsevolod Ivanov hyperborea paintings. This is what Heavenly Kalevivald looks like.
Tonight's drawing, men leaving off to war. I draw landscape/large-scale shots very rarely so I decided to challenge myself a bit. The scale and perspective is definitely goofy here and there, and the fort doesn't look nearly as grand as I originally wanted it to.
