Number of seasons as Head Coach until their 1st National Championship:
Pat Summitt: 13
Tara VanDerveer: 12
Dawn Staley: 17
John Wooden: 18
Mike Krzyzewski: 16
Geno Auriemma: 10
Roy Williams: 17
Pat Summitt didn’t win her first National Championship until her 13th season as Head Coach btw🤔
Pat’s # of wins in the 3 seasons before her 1st National Championship🏆: 69
Kellie’s # of wins the last 3 seasons: 70
The happiest people I know don’t make excuses.
If there’s a problem, they solve it.
If they’re wrong, they own it.
If they mess up, they make it right.
If they lose, they work harder.
The decision to make excuses is also the decision to forfeit your power to make a difference.
UConn had all the excuses to have a bad year: 6 players out w/ injury left them with 8 active players (4 are freshmen).
Yet they’re playing for a spot in the Final 4.
Does it have anything to do with the book on Geno’s desk? Probably not but that’s my only source of income rn😂
Raising the standard means:
- It’s going to be more difficult
- You are going to have to work harder
- You’ll be pushed past your comfort zone
- You have to commit and sacrifice more
Yet, I haven’t met anyone successful who regrets raising their standards.
My favorite thing is when someone wants a zoom call with the “guy” who runs
@BallisPsych
but then they see it’s a 24-year-old girl haha
Stop assuming women aren’t the ones leading in the sports industry
#NWGSD
UConn had the most regular-season losses it’s had under Geno since 2004-2005.
They dealt with Paige, Dorka, and Azzi all having injuries.
After all that adversity, tomorrow they play in the National Championship game.
This is the book that’s sitting on Geno’s desk.
Quick life update:
Thrilled to announce I’ve joined the
@ClemsonWBB
family as the Director of Player Development.
Overwhelmed with gratitude & excited for the future. Clemson, you’ll get my best💜🧡
I’ve spent the last 4+ years studying greatness; great players, great coaches, great teams, great performances, etc…
Here are 5 habits of greatness that you can apply into your life🧵
“Loving people doesn’t mean controlling their conduct, it’s caring for them without an agenda.
People don’t grow where they’re informed, they grow where they’re loved and accepted.”

@bobgoff
3 years ago I launched
@BallisPsych
I had no idea of the journey I was in for, I just wanted to help & inspire people.
The past 3 years have challenged me, scared me, & amazed me in so many ways.
I’m living the dream and I’m so blessed.
To everyone who’s supported, THANK YOU.
Amateurs built the Ark.
Experts built the Titanic.
The amateurs were laughed at.
The experts were admired.
The Ark saved mankind.
The Titanic sank.
Don’t wait for others to validate your dreams. If God called you to do something, that’s all the permission you need to do it.
The risk of being a leader,
The risk of being great,
The risk of being known,
The risk of being brave,
is also the decision to be criticized.
Risk it anyways.
COACHES:
I’ve seen so many season ending injuries already.
Right before my senior year of college I wrote a book for injured basketball players.
If anyone on your team has been hit with injuries/you’d like to add it to your library to give to your players, dm me your address!
“Winning isn’t everything.”
- John Wooden (🏆10x)
“Winning is not the point.”
- Pat Summitt (🏆8x)
“Champions must have motivation beyond winning.”
- Pat Riley (🏆9x)

- Geno Auriemma (🏆11x)

Kim Mulkey is the ultimate outlier! Only person winning National Championships as a player, assistant coach, and head coach at 2 schools. What a legend.
There’s a common misconception that if you’re doing what you love you’ll never work a day in your life.
The truth is, if you love what you do you’ll work longer and harder.
The good news is, you’ll enjoy the work, and it gives you a really good chance at being great.
The best basketball players love basketball.
The best runners love running.
The best teachers love teaching.
The best writers love writing.
Loving what you do isn’t just the path to more fun and enjoyment, it’s also the path to greatness.

In one of my psych classes last semester, the entire hour & 15 minutes was spent bashing social media.
This week I got invited to speak at the International Conference on Psychiatry and Psychology because of my work on twitter.
You can complain or you can just make it better🤷🏻♀️
Both times in the Bible we get let in on conversation between God & Jesus, God said:
You’re my son, I love you, I’m pleased with you
If Jesus was perfect & he needed love, belonging & encouragement, how much more do we need it?
Be the source of love, belonging & encouragement.
Today I’ll be attempting a 50 mile run.
Studies have shown that encouragement dramatically increases our pain tolerance so at any point in the next 15 hours feel free to shoot me a text to give me a boost! 904-624-5514
(I won’t get back to you today but know it’s helping!)
Jesus knew everything, yet the Bible records Him asking 307 questions. He only answered 3.
I used to think great leaders needed all of the answers, now I know they have all of the questions.
#WeAreAllLeaders
Life update:
A little over a year ago I gave a talk for
@Coaches_Clinic
called “What Makes Great Teams”
But I still have more questions than answers.
So I’m taking a year off from school to research what makes great teams and then write a book about it.
1 year ago today, Daily Wisdom was released.
“Let us look for ways to motivate one another to acts of good works.” Hebrews 10:24
If you have a copy, I’m not going to ask that you give a shoutout or leave a review. I ask that you use it to motivate others to acts of good works❤️
Secure people do a really good job at pointing out & celebrating the success of others.
Insecure people downplay & resent the success of others.
When you build someone up and when you tear someone down, it always says more about you than them.
The brain perceives a 4:1 complement to criticism ratio as neutral. Aim for 5:1 minimum.
A good way to tell if someone needs encouragement: if they are breathing!
Everyone needs lots of encouragement.
As a leader, the best thing you can do for someone is believe in them.
Don’t just believe in them, let them know why you believe in them. Great leaders are constantly encouraging others and building people up.
People become who you tell them they are; point out their greatness.
Freshman year of high school, I started collecting hotel key cards for every place basketball took me: from AAU, to visits, games, & now speaking engagements.
I used to take my basketball with me everywhere I went, now it takes me everywhere.

Comfort zones don’t keep our lives safe they keep our lives small.
4 years ago I was still debating whether I should start
@BallisPsych
because I was scared it wouldn’t work.
I’m glad I didn’t let fear trick me into a boring life, and I’m grateful 60k have joined the movement❤️
When I was an athlete, I used to think taking days off was lazy.
I’ve learned that sometimes gathering energy is more important than expending energy.
With rest comes renewed focus, perspective, and strength. Rest is wise preparation.
Jesus would heal people and say, “Tell no one.”
As someone in marketing, this seemed like a mistake. He’s onto something tho, because it’s been 2k years and we’re still talking about Him.
If He was the best leader ever, and He didn’t make it about Himself, we shouldn’t either.
One of the reasons so many people struggle with performance anxiety is that so many of us believe the lie, “I only matter IF...”
If I perform well.
If I win.
If I’m the best.
Don’t confuse your worth with your performance. You’re infinitely valuable regardless of performance.
I took this season away from the game to write a book about teams.
Guess what? There’s no book!
After many conversations/research I found it’s hard to have a great team without a commitment from each teammate to give their best; so I’m writing about that first.

Yesterday I RT’d a guy who was sitting at 0 retweets on his post, then the tweet blew up.
I woke up to a 3 paragraph essay in my dm’s from him thanking me. 3 paragraphs y’all. I think it benefitted me more than him.
I teach social media. So many ppl do these apps all wrong
They only respond to ppl w/ big followings & ignore small accounts
Y’ALL IT IS CAROL WITH 3 CATS & 8 FOLLOWERS THAT IS GOING TO HAVE YOUR BACK NO MATTER WHAT
Put some respect on Carol’s name
& Carol will respect you
Happy 4th Birthday
@BallisPsych
It should be older, but I let fear hold me back for months. I was scared people would find out I was a sophomore playing at a juco, and they would tell me I wasn’t qualified.
But 4 years ago I decided I was done waiting for permission to lead.
Great leaders wake up every morning hellbent on getting better. They crave learning, growing, & progress of any sort.
It’s hard to follow someone who is complacent. We are drawn to people who are on a mission to be better.
Fight complacency, chase excellence; that’s leadership.
“Great leaders possess 3 flexible skills: toughness, tenderness, and the ability to know when is the right time to use one or another.”
— Bill Russell
I’ve studied Bill a lot for
@BallisPsych
. He proved that giving your best for the team will always bring good back to you.
RIP❤️
I admire people who become successful and they don’t let it inflate their self-importance.
Jesus performed miracles and told people to keep it a secret.
Praise/skill/expertise can distract you and get to your head, but we’re drawn to people who are unfazed by their own success.
The happiest people I know are content, but never complacent.
There’s a big difference.
Complacency sees no need for improvement.
Contentment is a posture of gratitude. It doesn’t mean you lack ambition, but it does mean you’re not finding your joy/identity in the outcome.
Did I tell y’all my professor is the twitter queen?
My old professor told me nobody would listen until I had a PhD. Every time I meet with Mrs. Day I get inspired to work harder.
There’s power in having someone believe in you & speak truth over your life. Love you
@HeatherTDay
Also, her professors told her she was too young. Couldn’t do anything right now. She needed more education and credibility. Sometimes you have to forget what everyone told you and do what you believe God is calling you to
When someone cares enough about you to tell you the truth, especially if you know it was hard for them to say, the right response is probably, “Thank you!”
We can’t get better without the truth.
People who are about excellence know accountability is kind.
My favorite thing is when someone wants a zoom call with the guy who runs

but then they see it’s a 23-year-old girl haha

If you’re not religiously studying Miami Heat culture at this point and if you think this series is boring, I’m questioning you as a basketball fan.
I’m loving every bit of this🔥
The difference between joy and happiness is that joy can exist even in sadness.
Joy comes from recognizing life as a gift and understanding that you are unconditionally loved and made whole by God and nothing can take that away.
Life is hard but God is good. Choose joy.
The loyalty of these two Clemson Tigers who have spent 4 years together is something to celebrate.
It’s a testament to who they are as people, and it’s what

If you haven’t seen the movie "Air" that tells the story of how Nike signed Michael Jordan, you need to go see it.
In the movie, they reference Nike’s 10 principles that were written in 1977 (when Nike was a scrappy underdog brand).
Let’s break them down🧵
I was 19 when I wrote this.
Now, almost every day people tweet out pictures of pages or quotes from one of my books and it’s literally a dream come true.
Don’t let your dreams be dreams😌
“If you really want to be great at something, you have to truly care about it.
If you want to be great in a particular area, you have to obsess over it.”
— Kobe Bryant
Losses, setbacks, and difficulties are not failures if they prompt you to learn, grow, or get better.
Never waste adversity; use it to improve.
#BeyondWinning
The happiest people I know assume the best.
They assume they’ll win any game they play, they can be the best in their industry, and that people they don’t understand have the best intentions.
When we assume the best, we behave in a way that makes the best more likely to happen.
I’m doing lots of research on John Wooden for my next book, and probably the most impressive thing I’ve found is how he fought against racism.
#BeyondWinning
A thread⬇️
Nothing will accelerate your path to greatness faster than surrounding yourself with greatness.
Proverbs 13:20: Whoever walks with the wise and becomes wise.
When we want to win at all costs, we damage human beings.
Focusing on winning at all costs increases anxiety and undermines performance.
Person first, athlete second.
Character first, results second.
Mental health first, performance second.

One day I saw a group of little girls down the street dribbling in their driveway.
I grabbed my ball, met up with them, & showed them some tricks.
Now they all want to play in college.
When they see my car they ride their bikes to my house and yell my name until I come play🥺
What’s amazing about the warriors is 2 years ago they had the worst record in the NBA.
They had to trade like 5 players and Steve Kerr said none of them wanted to leave.
Worst record in the league and everyone wanted to stay with them.
Their culture is so special.
Finished a brand proposal/guide for an international player this morning.
Just because international sa’s can’t profit off NIL deals in the states, doesn’t mean they can’t build their brand and leverage their time in college to set them up for success for the rest of their life.
The next time you watch a basketball game, don’t even look at the scoreboard or the basketball.
Just count how many high fives, fist bumps, and huddles each team gets and you’ll know who’s going to win.
Trust me, it’s scary accurate.👀👊🏼
It’s easy to give your teammates high fives when things are going well.
However, high fives & close huddles are most needed when things aren’t going well.
Studies have shown high fives soothe in times of stress and predict individual success & team wins.
