Very excited to be teaching my own class for the first time for
@ukgeog
! Looking forward to talking about all sort of human geography topics from Waffle House to gerrymandering to gay bars!
We wholeheartedly welcome John “Jack” Swab, University of Kentucky,
@jswab_geog
, as the new AAG Student Councilor! The AAG Student Councilor represents the interests of student members of the AAG who make up close to 40% of AAG membership.
@AAG_Undergrads
So happy to see
@theAAG
working on this!
It’s not perfect (nothing ever is) but it’s a significant step forward for us an an org—one that I hope we continue for future conferences
Worried about the 2024 AAG conference in Hawai'i?
Here's an update on what
@theAAG
is doing to address concerns about cost, climate impacts, and Indigenous sovereignty, and to build a much more locally-engaged model for future annual meetings.
Students also have their own Student Councilor to represent their voice on the AAG Council. Jack Swab (
@jswab_geog
), both a PhD student in geography and a MS student in Library Science at
@universityofky
, will be Student Councilor until 2022!

The cartography in this election is especially disappointing. So many different ways that some of this data could be presented (esp. with mail in votes, percent counted, etc) yet we get stuck in the red/blue binary...
✨Publication Spotlight✨
Bethany Craig
@abethanymethod
, Jack Swab
@jswab_geog

Professional Geographer.

Super excited to be running this with
@itspangler
for
@theAAG
! Thinking through the hows/whys of research & writing seems pedantic but once you start you realize how many of processes get in the way doing work. It’ll be a nice mix between therapy and practical solutions too!
this summer,
@jswab_geog
and I are excited to lead a working group for
@theAAG
on philosophies & principles of research, writing, and spatial data management:
we'll explore why we lean on certain comforts and affordances that make doing scholarship feel "right" or "wrong"...
Second day of teaching
#humangeo
for
@ukgeog
! Talking about the syllabus today—pretty boring stuff but hopefully the students will appreciate the flexibility I built into the course 🤞🏻
The World Geography Bowl is an integral event of regional and national meetings that boost participation among geography students.
@abethanymethod
,
@jswab_geog
, and DeBruin propose changes to make the event a more inclusive community-building activity.
It’s up! Have fun watching my
#nacis2018
presentation on early 3D mapping!
Thanks to
@wilsonism
@mon2ier
for their assistance on the presentation and for
@NACIS
for putting on such a great conference and hosting the videos!

An incredibly difficult and sad decision to have to make. . . but it’s what’s best for the AAG, the
@theAAG
staff, and many of our members
Fingers crossed for 2023!!
With close consideration of the latest information surrounding COVID-19 in mind, AAG has made the decision to convert
#AAG2022
to an entirely virtual event. More about our decision and our programming here
Was fortunate enough to take in the new Gordon Matta-Clark exhibit
@BronxMuseum
; it's a thought-provoking curation that pushes the viewer to think about the many uses of urban space
But don't just take my word for it, read the review by
@robertasmithnyt
:
does anyone have a listing of “abandoned” geography journals? trying to compile a list of journals that either went out of print or radically changed in their outlook
Make sure to attend my panel (co-run with my friend F.M. Kim) on "Finding Queerness in GIS and Cartography" this Thursday at AAG in Denver! (with
@gdouglassjaimes
,
@jswab_geog
, and Eric Robsky Huntley)!
@DeondreSmiles
Agree. Also I think it requires geographers to think about what roles of leadership look like in the AAG. The current model was designed to be explicitly “apolitical” needs to change

Beautiful map of

The irony of it all is the he doesn’t need to do this at all...he’s emeritus! Also, this is going to be an 18 months CRISIS. Its not like we are gonna wash our hands of this in a few weeks...
For everyone who hates their landlord and any undergrads trying to understand housing discrimination in their urban geog class, here’s Josh Whites ‘Landlord’
Also more than 3 older Sanborn maps exist: multiple volumes for Boston 1868/1869, multiple volumes for Chicago early 1870s, and probable maps for Williamsport PA, Buffalo NY, and somewhere in Nebraska.
Reguardless still a BIG find!
Hey
@theAAG
is the session entitled “locational information and the public interest” cancelled? I can’t find it in the session list anymore and the link is dead!
Came across & scanned this fascinating debate over what historical geography was in the early 1970s—some big names in here and issues that haven’t gone away...
@sbenkorsh
I just committed to using zotero full time—I’ve actually written out a fairly (?) detailed workflow about how I use too if that’s useful. Also I remember all of those filing cabinets from my visit!
