Andy is a horrible moderator. He lets important points go over his head and chooses to push back on things that are mostly unnecessary. He’s more focused on getting through the cards than actually being present in the convo. Makes my head spin.

🧵For nearly a year, I've been speaking with people in Chicago whose lives have been affected by gun violence.
I wanted to learn more about their views on news coverage and how
@teamtrace
can be of service to them.
What I heard:
Wrigleyville bars returned from lockdown with long lines and few masks this weekend.
Some people said they have worries about the pandemic and are concerned they’re part of the problem — but others said they’re young and want to get out during the summer.
Last winter, we
@teamtrace
asked ourselves: What would the story of gun violence in Chicago be if we allowed survivors to lead the way?
Today, we published a collection of personal essays — the culmination of that idea and more:
1 year ago,
#ElPaso
experienced the deadliest attack on the Latino community in modern U.S. history.
23 people were killed.
Prosecutors say the suspect targeted Mexican people. Before the shooting, he posted messages similar to President Trump's anti-immigrant rhetoric.
As
#LatinxHeritageMonth
comes to a close, I wrote about Rosalia making reggaeton, cultural appropriation, colorism within Latinidad, and ultimately who gets to be considered (and believed to be) Latinx.
Check it out:
To help flip this dynamic, we’re launching a program for survivors of Chicago gun violence — and their friends and loved ones — to tell their own stories.
I spoke with Black youth in Chicago about the ways gun violence impacts their relationship to the city and what they need from local leaders to feel safer this summer for

Some professionals news: Excited to announce that I joined
@teamtrace
as the Chicago Engagement Reporter. I’ll still be writing a bit but my main focus will be listening to community members impacted by gun violence and learning how we can improve coverage in Chicago.
Welcome to

Justin's work with
@city_bureau
recently won *two* awards from the Chicago
@headlineclub
:
-Participants will be paired with a trauma-informed storytelling coach who will guide them through the writing process.
-They'll learn writing skills, be paid a $700 stipend, and receive a byline on The Trace's website and likely a print zine later on.
How this framing flattens the issue, stifles political will, perpetuates racist stereotypes, and hinders the media's ability to handle survivors’ stories with the nuance and care they deserve.
Throughout my community engagement work last year, I also learned that when done right, storytelling can be cathartic for survivors and their loved ones and a pivotal step on their path to healing.
We're hoping this collaborative space will be that for some folks in Chicago.
One Target in Streetville gets looted and the whole city shuts down; whole communities get looted and displaced and the city is like “thats just how the market works 🤷🏻♂️”
I’m compiling a list of housing resources for folks impacted by COVID-19 that
@city_bureau
is publishing next month. Let me know if you have any Chicago-specific resources you’d like share.
I wrote about the history of Puerto Rico’s black and white Resitance flag for
@MotherJones
; Learned how flags in colonized spaces like Puerto Rico become symbols of a potential, decolonized future
As media fixated on looting & property damage this past summer, I hung out with some dope artists in South Shore who are using public art as a path to collective healing.
This is the first story in

The IL eviction moratorium is set to expire this Saturday. Chicago residents & organizers are now occupying the plaza outside of the city’s eviction courts, hoping to pressure
@GovPritzker
to extend it.

“Americans” wanna keep Puerto Ricans in their prayers after a natural disaster yet are hella silent about austerity measures that make these disasters extra devastating
Last fall,
@city_bureau
’s housing team began speaking w/ Chicago residents facing eviction to better understand the impacts the pandemic is having behind closed doors & allow folks the space to share their experiences. Here are seven of those stories:
