The NIH needs to move to a letter of intent system and those selected may submit full applications. There’s no reason to be putting together 100s of pages of documents for the NIH reviewers to simply “not discuss” your application.
Better for applicants, reviewers, & admin
Today is truly bittersweet.
I passed the EPPP earlier this morning.
3 days ago, my mom passed away. I took the exam because I knew she would want me to do my best.
And I passed it for my mom. I wanted to make her proud. I’m sad she wasn’t here for me to tell her.
@davidhogg111
The first clause of the amendment is intentionally ignored. It literally starts with “a well regulated…”
Not no regulation allowed
Not only a little regulation allowed
Not even average regulation allowed
But WELL regulated
I am extremely excited that both my NIMH K23 research grant and my MA clinical psychology license were conferred on the same day! I’m looking forward to doing this important work in South Africa with the best colleagues at
@hivmentalhealth
and I’m grateful for all the mentorship
Did a thing today! Finally, after 6 years (with a few months to go) and a lot of blood, sweat, & tears, walking in my PhD graduation! Shoutout to my fabulous mentors
@DrSteveSafren
and the many people in my academic and personal “village” that supported me through this journey!
I just successfully defended my dissertation!!!!!!!!!!
Life does not feel real right now. 3+ yrs of work on this, 6 yrs of graduate school coming to a close. Just a few more months until three letters get added to the end of my name!
@panickedpostdoc
@AcademicChatter
Don’t focus on the h-index in this case. That’s not what’s important here. Someone w/ 0 first author pubs will not get grants, promotions, or collaborations. Someone w/ 12 will. It doesn’t matter if he has 100 pubs. With 0 first author, every academic will see right through that.
What a terrific birthday present from the
@HarvardCFAR
!
I’m thrilled to be able to do this work in SA with my mentors Conall O’Cleirigh and
@JohnJoska
in collaboration with the
@hivmentalhealth
unit at UCT
We’re going to examine syndemic factors and their effects on HIV outcomes
This is a really great step. We should honor champions of LGBTQ+ affirming care
This is also a lesson in activism. People identified a problem, spoke out, & achieved a step forward! Good for
@ABCTprez
&
@ABCTNOW
And, separately, the CT articles still need to be retracted.
I am pleased to announce that
@ABCTNOW
is establishing ONE new and very special award this year…. The Charles Silverstein Lifetime Achievement Award in Social Justice. The first recipient of this award will be Dr. Charles Silverstein
@IHITHerapy
. 1/2
And the K23 is submitted!!!
Send wishes for positive reviews
Thanks to all my amazing mentors who made this submission possible
Feels like huge weight lifted
This year’s
@ABCTNOW
has been awesome! So great to be back after 3 years to learn and connect in person
There has been so much great content this year, and so much more to come
Very excited for this packed day
@ABCTNOW
! First conference in person in a while and lucky I get to attend this amazing line-up.
I’m going to try to live tweet the best stuff!
If you’re here, I’m presenting in a symposium at 3:30 on the 7th floor
Hooray! I’m so proud of all my colleagues who matched today. From my close friends in the process, I’ve heard all top choices!!!
Also,
@MGHPsychiatry
BMED class is 🔥 🔥 🔥

@ClementDeja
👀
I love the NIH—they’re my primary funding source for research
AND
It’s really hard to write a budget in a K23 that will provide you the fundamental experience and training needed to be independent on $50K per year. That’s supposed to cover tuition, travel, training, & research?
Hey
#ABCT
members,
If you want a president who is going to not only push our field and org forward, but who is also a fabulous clinician, researcher, and person, you should nominate Steve Safren
@DrSteveSafren
for President!
Fantastic SIG meeting of the
@ABCTSGMSIG
going on right now
@ABCTNOW
!!!
It’s great to hear about the work the SIG and members are doing to advance the care of SGM people around the world.
That work includes
@DrSteveSafren
running for President of ABCT!
Just learned I was rejected from a summer training program grant but I’m here with SpongeBob to normalize rejection
You miss 💯 of the shots you don’t take
Piling on to worse non-work news today. When it rains it pours
Anyway, 2/3 grants this year isn’t bad & another 3 in prep
I am starting a small private practice in MA. Please keep me in mind if you know of anyone who is interested in Telehealth-based psychotherapy.
Thank you in advance for any referrals.

Working at an academic medical center is like going to a restaurant that says we have space for you, but you must build your own table & chairs, and also take your own order, and also cook for yourself... but we gave you the ingredients so that'll be $32.78... do you want to tip?
Leaving for

tomorrow for 2 weeks. Our team is working on study start up, grant writing, and developing collaboration in

I’ll also be live tweeting hot takes about airplane travel, decolonizing

@ABCTNOW
This is an awesome idea!
I’m a 5th year grad student (applying to internship this year) in the clinical health psychology area at the University of Miami.
My research interests are in examining syndemic problems and HIV treatment and prevention.
Absolutely heartbroken to hear about
#ClubQ
Make no mistake, this is a direct result of normalizing hate speech in today’s society.
We have to do better. Lives depend on it.
Listening to NPR on my home from ABCT & the top 2 stories were mass murders using guns…
In the past month, I have:
-submitted 3 grants including an NIH K23
-been planning a wedding
-submitted a first author manuscript
-submitted protocols to IRB for 2 studies
-been managing family health crises
-traveled 3 of the last weekends
If you need me in May, find me here:
@CraigAnthonyRS
It would be a huge disservice to the field if you A) don’t publish with this title and B) don’t publish a review of this research systematically dismantling it piece by piece. Or at least an op-ed? This is amazing stuff.
Come work with us

This is incredibly important legislation. Our government doesn’t always work for so many of our citizens, but sometimes, every now and then, it does something spectacular. This is good. Our country needed this affirmation. Many of my friends and colleagues needed this affirmation
Finally sent my mentor
@DrSteveSafren
a first draft of my dissertation!! And like the good mentee I am, I timed it perfectly to count as his holiday present 😇
This may be just me, but if journals had an app I could use on my phone to read their issues, I think I would engage in much more informal reading of articles vs. waiting until I’m doing a lit review.
Learning a lot on the first site visit to Sub-Saharan Africa on my T32 post-doc! Last week, Zimbabwe, this week South Africa. Thanks,
@GLCMHD

Meetings, collaboration building, and grant writing galore!

In literal cancel culture: I will now be cancelling my subscription to the
@nytimes
. I will not financially support an organization that actively chooses to be part of the problem, and not the solution.
Guess I’ll go read
@washingtonpost
The day after hundreds of current and former NYT writers pleaded with the NYT to stop their transphobic coverage and days after a 16 year old trans girl in the UK was murdered in a hate crime, they publish this bullshit.
They don't care. The cruelty is the point.
My dad taught me to iron. As a teenager, I thought it was stupid. I never thought I’d care.
When your travel steamer breaks in SA, you might have wished you listened to your dad. I’m sure glad I did.
Now I’m ready for the
#psychotherapysymposium2023
in Cape Town!
Dear editors of journals that are not specific to HIV research:
You can also accept research on HIV. It’s okay. HIV-related research doesn’t have to only be published in HIV journals.
That feeling when you submit a grant on a Friday AND that grant is with the
@MGH_GVPC
to collect pilot data for a primary gun violence prevention study using innovative technology in partnership with MIT!
Fingers crossed for this submission!
Dear academics:
Looking for a way to force yourself to stop working on a holiday? Go get your eyes dilated. I actually can’t read my emails, and it’s amazing.

In 7th grade math, my final grade was a D-
One of the major topics we learned was limits.
My teacher told me “your grade is the limit as grades approach failing”
I told him “I don’t know what that means”
He said, “I know.”
Flex your lowest academic low score.
To remind us that almost everyone fails at some point in life but it isn't the end of the road. Just a memory in the end.
Mine was 27/100 in Engineering Math 2, just a year after I'd scored 99 in 12th boards. Much needed kick in my butt.
In trying to set up a call with one of my wonderful and amazing European colleagues…
I think she might be on to something!
Toxic productivity in academia, especially in the US
While we're all thinking about voting in midterm elections, it's also important to consider how we effect change in our professional capacity. One way is to make our organizations more effective advocates. That's why I just voted for

I’ve finally reached the point in my career where I’m done with excessively long emails and way too much punctuation. No one has time for this!!!
From now on, I’m either using speech to text or it looks like I’m using speech to text.
Just getting to the point is so liberating.
[gets up to the regular TSA check-in at Boston]

Does anyone else have anything similar and want to collab on a symposium? Global MH or Tx response broadly?
Please RT!
That feeling when you think you lost your work ID badge, but then you find it outside your door when you get home! Thank you neighbors!! You just saved me from the 7 circles of hell that is replacing a hospital ID badge
I have been learning a whole lot on Twitter in the last day. Thank you to these amazing colleagues for educating me. It’s pretty clear that we, as a field, should be demanding Barlow and Hayes retract the publication & apologize, & that the journal print a retraction
I’m shocked
Learning more and more as the details around
@ABCTNOW
‘s apology develop. If you think that psychology as a field has moved past harmful anti-LGBTQ beliefs and actions, just take a look at some of the responses in this thread.
@peter_masiakos
@WalshFreedom
@NEA
Another roadblock:
Define properly train.
Police receive an avg of ~75 hours of firearms training *before* going into the field.
How and when are teachers going to get “properly trained”?
1. Mental health problems are not the reasons for mass shootings
2. The excuse blaming mass shootings on mental health problems is based in stigma and is completely unfounded ridiculous
3. If you’re going to blame mental health problems, then actually improve mental health care!!
PSA: Never use
@vrbo
to plan a vacation if you want to actually be able to go. A host just asked me to pay double what was listed, & when I told VRBO, the host canceled the trip. When I called VRBO, they said it's w/in policy & hosts can cancel 1 day in advance for any reason
???
My fabulous mentor,

It's pretty cool when your research is highlighted in a scoping review:
"a new statistical approach inspired from research in psychopathology has been used to model syndemics: network analysis (Lee et al., 2020a, 2020b)...
First time ever being the corresponding author of a publication!
Please send correspondence. Telegraph is preferred method of communication, but will also accept smoke signals.

Yesterday, I made the mistake of commenting on a post about the 2nd amendment.
I’m really grateful for the space on academic Twitter. The rest of Twitter is scary.
It’s a good reminder, though, we have a lot of work to do in this country.

how you would handle medical marijuana? If a Pt is Rx'ed meds that could alter mental status, do you call CPS? If I just had knee surgery & Rx'ed vicodin for pain, & tell you during session that my kid just got home from school and I took a dose, are you calling CPS?
Pictures from meetings on my trip to South Africa with
@FoodForwardSA
where I learned that for $35 they can feed a family of 4 for 2 weeks. And with the City of Cape Town Health Department about scaling up depression treatment. I have a very rewarding job!
Thoughts and prayers haven’t worked. AT. ALL. Let’s do something else… like ACTUALLY ENACT SOME COMMON SENSE GUN REFORM! How many tragedies do we have to watch? Why must we condemn ourselves to tragedy???
Was asked to do a review for a journal. I accepted and did it in a timely manner. (that could be the end of the tweet as an accomplishment)
But, even more exciting as a senior grad student, was that the Assoc. Editor's letter to the authors specifically agreed with my comments.
I would have considered taking a job at a Florida state uni at some point in the future. Buuuuut, pretty sure I’d never get hired or make tenure under this law.
This is abhorrent governing. And Florida will suffer for it. Good luck getting profs to come to these institutions
All faculty hiring will be done by the university board or president—who *may not delegate* any aspect of any hiring decision or any hiring authority to any group of faculty however constituted. They are “not required to consider recommendations or opinions of faculty.” 5/
You know you’re in academia when…
I had a nightmare last night that I didn’t have any slides ready for a talk I’m giving in November.
Most unrealistic part of the dream: the room was full
“They should not be going to jail for alcohol or drugs, they should be going to treatment”
-
@JoeBiden
, the next President of the United States of America
YES!!!!! YES. YES. YES.
Mental health care is a human right, not a crime.
I decided to stop working on my dissertation tonight and watch Dune. I actually think my dissertation might be less confusing than this movie. What is going on???
One of my favorite things in the entire world is when you're at an airport at 6 in the morning and a person is watching a video on their phone at full volume with no headphones (and no mask)! Thank you SO much for sharing with everyone around you. Sharing is caring 🙃

Maybe just leave it off? Unplugged? In the junk drawer in case it’s needed again but then completely forgotten about forever? Maybe don’t turn it back on.
Taking a break from grieving some personal/familial news to instead grieve the deaths of more children in their schools at the hands of gun violence.
Enough, already. Please.
I agree when it comes to Method section. Scientifically, we should explain the methods used in the best, clearest, most concise way. In secondary data analysis, the only thing that *should* change is the data analysis plan (and some measures)
Otherwise the method is the same
The idea that self plagiarism is some horrible act is nonsense. Why should we write the same methods section in 5 different ways? Don’t publish the same results or conceptual analysis multiple times. But the horror at reusing all prev work is prissy and not well thought through.
One of my favorite things about academia is watching people who are literal geniuses and leaders in their fields pushing science forward be absolutely humbled by getting their PowerPoint slides onto zoom
May the 4th be with you!
*Unless* you are a pro-lifer who wants to take away women’s rights to reproductive healthcare!
It’s hard to find words to describe the emotions about this horrific SCOTUS decision. Trying to sit with it, but it sucks

In short, in addition to being statistically sound and coherent with the model of mutually causal epidemics, network analysis could offer actionable data to improve the health of MSM by identifying which conditions should be prioritised for interventions (
