Rich Strike was just 3 years and 12 days old when he won the Derby. His sire didn't win a stakes until the Travers and his Oaks-winning dam finished third in the Queen's Plate. His Beyers have risen in each of his last five starts. Could it be that he's just coming into his own?
Just taped a segment with Good Morning America (which will air tomorrow) regarding Rich Strike's improbable Derby victory, the positive story lines it has created for horse racing, and whether the good vibes can help heal some of the sport's wounds. Hope they find time for it!
My first racing job - 1974 - in publicity at Hollywood Park, came up with a feature idea about this Los Al trainer named Lukas switching to thoroughbreds. Pitched it to my boss. "He might be big someday." I said. "Naw, nobody cares," he told me. "Come up with something else."
One of the best things about the first week of racing at the Spa has been the superb work of track commentator
@FrankMirahmadi
. Unquestionably, he's one of the premiere race callers in the biz and Saratoga is lucky to have him. Always enthusiastic, accurate, and insightful.
Field loads for '89 Big 'Cap. Julio, watching race with me from Press Box, says "why you making me run this (50-1) horse here? Two minutes later, we run down to the WC, he says "I toll you he'd (Martial Law) win. Toll you. See him train? Couldn't lose, though." RIP, Julio.
Flightline. . .another annihilation. 1:21.37 over a dead track despite being eased up from the furlong pole to the wire. Margin? Who knows? 10 lengths? He may not win the Eclipse Award as champion sprinter but he's the fastest sprinter in training by a pole.
Flightline did exactly what was expected, and in this game, that doesn't always happen. Congrats to everybody at the
@johnwsadler
barn. He's as good as I've seen. And I've seen most of 'em in the past half century.
So pleased that
@GulfstreamPark
will have fields loaded at post time for every race. Gamblers will adjust - and be thrilled to know when the races will actually run. Thank you, management!
Final comment, Met Mile - Bolt d'Oro could have run in the 7F Woody Stephens vs. 3-year-olds (he's a Grade-1 winner at this distance) instead of facing the best older milers in North America. High class colt deserves better.
I don't know what the "letter of the law" is in Ky. I do know that in California there's a DQ only if it's determined that a placing (or a larger share of the purse) is lost due to a foul. Yes, that's a judgement call, but aren't they all? That guideline was ignored today.
Vasilika's victory in the Rodeo Drive Stakes was her seventh in a row and her ninth in her last 10 since being claimed for $40,000 by Jerry Hollendorfer in February. Is she now a possibility for the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf?

@santaanitapark
Early Voting didn't make the lead but he didn't have to. Masterfully ridden by Jose Ortiz, he used Armagnac as a prompter, went by easily when ready and held sway over Epicenter and Creative Minister. And at 5-1, no less. Easy pickings.
Back in the game with my one-horse stable. Hail Columbia (2yo, Exaggerator x Villa d'Este) in her first career breeze Sunday a.m. - a quarter in :24 3/5 for
@johnwsadler
(she's the worker behind). Who knows what the future will bring? Hopefully it'll be a fun ride.
Messier (3/5), who somehow got beat twice at Los Alamitos, throws his hat into the Triple Crown ring with a 14-length win in the Robert B. Lewis S.-G3, setting the pace under pressure before drawing off at will. Baffert/Johnny V. again. Empire Maker colt looks like the goods.
Even before the Kentucky Derby I said Justify's least difficult Triple Crown race would be the Belmont Stakes, because he has perfect blend of speed/stamina, and he's thoroughly cooperative (he'll do whatever the rider asks him to). Assuming he's 100%, he'll complete the sweep.
The 30th anniversary of one of the biggest upsets in Big 'Cap history. I've been in this game a long time, that's the proudest I've ever been of a race horse.
Jeff Siegel recalls telling his dad when he was at the track at just 7 years old that he would someday win the Santa Anita Handicap at
@santaanitapark
. That dream became a reality when Martial Law upset the 1989 Big 'Cap at 50-1.
@jsiegelracing
describes that thrilling experience
Was Tiz the Law at his best today? I kinda think not, for whatever reason. Maybe back-to-back 1 1/4 mile races (within four weeks) took its toll. Sure trained well in the interim, though. He's zero-for-two at Churchill, undefeated everywhere else. Maybe that's it. Grasping.
Little known fact - Utah Head Football Coach Kyle Whittingham, by his own admission, is a horse racing fan. Favorite athlete growing up? Secretariat. "Hands down," he says. Well done tonight, Coach.
Why does every dirt race
@DelMarRacing
resemble the finish of the Grand National at Aintree? Half the field is totally exhausted by the quarter pole and stagger home. I'm all for a safe track but this makes for bad sport. The inside lanes appear to be knee deep in quicksand.
Hard to believe today's renewal of the Santa Anita Handicap is the 35th anniversary of my greatest thrill in this sport - Martial Law's stunning 50-1 victory in the Big 'Cap for our Clover Racing Stable partners, who spent $40,000 in supplemental money to enter.
In this day and age, for Justify to have accomplished so much in such a relatively short period of time makes this achievement difficult to truly appreciate. He'll get some well-deserved time off now; looking forward to seeing him return in the late summer or early fall.
Maybe for a few strides he came over, but there still was a mile and one-quarter to go, and it didn't affect the outcome at all. For anybody. For the record, Restoring Hope was in the race for one reason - because the owner wanted him to be.
Saw my first race
@GGFracing
on Feb. 16, 1971, when Fast Fellow (Laffit Pincay, Jr.) won the Golden Bear Stakes. Place was packed. Always scheduled my classes at San Jose State early just in case I ended up "liking" something on the day's card. Wound up being almost every day.
Game Winner appeared to hit the side of the gate at the start and was off a bit slowly, was forced very wide into first turn while in the second flight, advanced midway, made an extended run from the 5/16 pole to the wire and gradually wore down Knicks Go. Much best. Impressive.
Justify (unofficially) in 36:1 and 1:00.3 to the wire, out to 7/8 pole in 1:13.1, eased out to the 3/4 pole in 1:27.4 while breezing throughout in company. Confirmed as a starter for the Santa Anita Derby on Saturday by Baffert.
Chasing Yesterday (half-sis to American Pharoah by Tapit)) wins the Gr.-1 Starlet Stakes in desperate fashion over Enaya Alrabb, with Mother Mother a close third. The winner was at least 4-wide every step of the way, so she was best by much more than the margin would indicate.
Nadal stays unbeaten winning the Rebel S.-G2 taking heat every step of the way yet still finding the reserve energy that only top class colts have. So brave, so impressive.
What a (Del Mar) season it's been for debuting 2-year-olds. Baffert just unveiled another monster, Tale of the Union, a $925,000 Timonium 2-year-old in training buy who crushed his field by a distance in 1:03.81. Left at 4/5, so everybody knew. Grade-1 somewhere next.
Certainly not nearly as accomplished just yet, but considering the poor start, the early trouble, and the quality of the colt that he just laughed at when blowing past him on the turn, Flightline sure brings back memories of Spectacular Bid (the best I've ever seen in person).
Imprimis crosses the wire a clear winner in the Troy S.-G3 but is DQ'd for drifting in and bumping third place finisher Shekky Shebaz in mid-strretch. Runner-up American Sailor (7-1) gets kissed in. I respectfully disagree with the decision.

Fun to see 8-year-old Pink Lloyd add another brick to his wall – he’s now won 25 of 30 career starts ($1.5 million+), all at Woodbine – in the Bold Venture S.-G2. Many of his wins have come in graded company, not just Ontario-bred races. Career managed expertly by Robert Tiller.
Looking forward to the debut Friday of
@spendthriftfarm
homebred Missy P. in the 4th
@santaanitapark
. Full-sister to Mia Mischief has been terrorizing her workmates dating back to mid-December without ever really being asked to show her best speed. Access her works

Flightline (1/5) just ran 1:08.05 while being geared down in the final sixteenth. Might have come close to the 13 1/4 length winning margin of his debut win last April. Not sure the Tapit colt won't be even better as a miler. Scary.
Will have a small gamble on Euro shipper Althiqa in the upcoming Just a Game S. Not sure if she'll get the help up front she needs - maybe barnmate Summer Romance can help her out a bit - but if she's within range she'll have her chance. Can really blast home. Currently 6-1.
Omaha Beach always had talent. In his last two starts, he's shown the reserve energy when challenged in deep stretch that only good horses have. Do you jump off him in the Kentucky Derby for Roadster? That's Mike Smith's dilemma.
I said before the Belmont that I expected Justify to run better than he had in either the Derby or Preakness IF he caught a fast track, the theory being that he didn't particularly care for a wet surface but tolerated it. But now I'm thinking it really doesn't matter.
Debuting 3yo Flightline (4/5) brought $1 million as a yearling and may be worth a whole lot more, graduating by a pole in SA 7th for Prat/Sadler, 1:08.75, eased up in the final furlong. Tapit x Feathered colt is a monster in the making, at least going short. Beautiful mover.
Umberto Rispoli just announced his choice of agent on the
@santaanitapark
simulcast show. Thought he was going to have three hats on a table and then pick one, but no, he simply said he committed to Scott McClellan and will remain in California. Great agent, terrific jockey.
I wish HRTV still existed, but it's flattering to see that several of our implementations have been picked up by other racing networks. Thrilled to be directing all of my energies to

and
@santaanitapark
, with a ton of new stuff on the horizon.
It's not too late to consider Justify a possibility for the Derby, according to Bob Baffert. "There is a plan," says Bob. What is it? "I can't tell you, but there is a plan." Needless to say, Justify's maiden win was the most impressive of the year.
Was looking for a 2 year old colt in the West to get excited about, and Eight Rings (Empire Maker) certainly fills the bill for now (and Baffert has several others). Pressed the pace in hand, then took complete control to win the DMR 5th with a ton left by five in 1:03.68.
Mother Mother...very impressive. The Pioneerof the Nile colts have been better than the fillies, but this one could be special. When I went by the barn with Zoe a couple of weeks ago, Baffert pulled her out of her stall to show her to us. Gorgeous filly.

Instagrand's defeat in the Withers was thoroughly predictable - his works had been dull and uninspiring - but give him credit for staying on to be third after appearing on empty after 6f. Middle distance max for him. The pace meltdown gave it to Haikal. Not sure he'll route.
Wish there was some type of post-season honor Vasilika could win (there's no trophy for "claim of the year"). With today's victory in the Goldikova, she has now won 8 straight (9-for-10 this year), the last 3 graded. Was a $40k claim last February by Jerry Hollendorfer.
Fortunate to have seen in person Buckpasser win the Malibu in 1966, Damascus in '68, and Spectacular Bid in 1980. All became Horse of the Year. Flightline has that type of talent but there's still plenty of work to be done. With
@johnwsadler
in charge, he'll have his chance.
Loved Double Jab in the Del Mar 3rd race as a win play and rolling exotic single. Loved him when he entered the gate at 7-1. Loved him when he won for fun. Didn't love him so much when the tote showed midway thru the race that he suddenly had become the 5/2 favorite.
With 3 horses left to load in the Suburban, Preservationist was 6-1 on the tote. After the latch was sprung, he went to 7/2. Was always within range of Catholic Boy to the head of the lane, got thru inside, then drew off smartly in 1:59.99. Daymaker.
Who is served by taking down the clearly best horse? When I went to steward’s school at U of L the first rule was “look for a reason to leave the best horse up, don’t look for a reason to take him down.” If WOW’s rider thought he was cost a placing, he would have claimed foul.
Did you know that tonight's

champ to go with his Mike Venezia and George Woolf Memorial Awards.
It's unsatisfying to see a horse back into a win, and that's exactly what Country House did. Had he truly been fouled (he wasn't) and then awarded the win, there would have been little or no controversy. The frustration is that the best horse, rightly or wrongly, was dq'd.
@sportofkings4
@LongshotAaronV
@jsiegelracing
@RichardMigliore
Great podcast, guys! Hate MS got DQ'd, but I feel that CH's run is being glossed over. I know that's not what this discussion was about, but I wonder, if Tacitus, Improbable, GW or WOW had finished 2nd, are people less riled up if one of them got the win, instead of a 65-1 shot?
Another Day Maker sweep for us at Del Mar - thanks to K P Dreamin ($11.00) and Volubile ($12.20). That makes 7 of the last 8. Day Makers (two each from Saratoga and Del Mar daily) available to members of
@xpressbet
. See you tomorrow!
Charlatan returns as well as he left - make that better than he left - by demolishing the Malibu field with contempt. Not sure if he'll win an Eclipse Award in the Sprint Division but I'm fairly certain there's no sprinter out there who could touch him.
Good to see Unique Bella return to winning form. I just wished she would have settled a couple of lengths off Paradise Woods and then engaged her midway on the turn, as opposed to tearing after her at the 5/8 pole. But that's just her. Just plain fast. Can't mess with her.
Adare Manor could be Baffert's best 3-year-old filly (she certainly trained like it). With the two-sprints-and-a-stretch out pattern, the Uncle Mo filly made a mockery of the
@santaanitapark
8th race, graduating on the lead by a pole. Was ML 2nd choice; got crushed down to 3/5.
We've seen (at least) six 2-year-olds with legitimate Grade-1 potential during the first three weeks of the Del Mar season - the fillies Brill, Chasing Yesterday, Mother Mother, and Summering (turf), and the colts Roadster and Instagrand.
Forget the Travers, that was worth the price of admission. Midnight Bijou just seems to have Elate's number. That's horse racing's equivalent of winning on a buzzer-beater.
Got a call from Prat's agent, Derek Lawson, after the race. "I watched your Day Maker video, you were so convincing I even bet on him. I took some heat from a few other trainers who wanted me for the race but this one (Erotic) was always the right call."
Rock Your World was 2nd best local 3yo I saw this winter - behind Life Is Good. But the evidence suggested he was just a turf horse (I thought so, too). Love the strategy to send him leaving the gate to eliminate dirt-in-his-face concerns. Kentucky? Worry about that later.
Maximum Security (2/5) makes the pace with Sharp Samural right along side every step of the way before exerting his superiority in the final furlong to win the Pacific Classic by 3 1/2 lengths in 2:01.24. 5-6-1-2. 'Security has crossed the wire first in 11 of 12 career starts.
Under a ride from the 3/8ths to the wire, Tacitus enjoyed a dream run aided by a blazing pace to prevail in the Tampa Bay Derby in his 3rd career start (first since Nov.). He's a one-paced grinder, but being by Tapit from Close Hatches, he should improve and stay all day.
Trainer Bob Baffert says he was pleased with West Coast's runner-up effort to Accelerate in the Awesome Again Stakes and believes the race should have his colt primed for a top effort in next month's Breeders' Cup Classic.
@WatchXBTV
Impressive 3YO maiden winner Charlatan (:47.80) & Fay Dan (:48.00) worked 4F at

For whatever it's worth, Cee Ce just ran a mile in 1:37.33 in winning the Beholder Mile-G1. Thirty minutes earlier Charlatan won his race in 1:36.24. The speed figures guys are going to have some fun with this.
Been Studying Her makes it a perfect 4-for-4 Day Maker sweep today for
@xpressbet
members by winning the Generous Portion Stakes at a fat 8-1 for Smith/Hollendorfer. Bulletproof One (1/5) had speed inside and folded up. Let's keep this up through Labor Day, then take a breather!
Tiz the Law ran as expected to win the Florida Derby-G1. He's good, very good. But I still believe the real depth and power lies out West with Charlatan, Authentic, Nadal, and Honor A.P. Hope they all remain healthy and in top form until September (and beyond that, too).
