Today, 9 boys started Trombone lessons for the first time. They are all in Year 9, so it is never too late. Tomorrow they will come to their first rehearsal and Monday night they have their first performance. One note is all they need to play to feel part of it! I am so happy!

Music in schools is essential. Sadly, not always possible. So, we need to find solutions to that problem Recruitment & retention is an issue. Funding is an issue. Lack of support from leaders is an issue. But let’s all work on how to solve these issues.

Just finished choir. When 96 people turn up you know it is going to be a great evening. I started the choir in 2010 and I had 5-10 people per week. I am so proud of how far we have come along! The sound and the energy in the room is just amazing! @gleeclubuk Here’s to 2023!

Every day I teach well, badly, too quickly, too slowly. Sometimes I talk too much, miss a hand up or forget to help a student. Most days I will go above and beyond, but some days I can’t. Teaching is a funny job, but also a great one. I am still learning in my classroom!

@RogersHistory I hate it when the “negative feedback” on something, like an event, is actually just one person moaning. I then hate it when the school or leader decides to listen to that one person, ignoring the 100s of other people who are perfectly happy. Misappropriation of energy!!

Why don’t we actually ask young people if they are okay & what they need. We seem to label them all as broken & then assume just English maths & science are important to them. Let’s not get this wrong. Education is more than a few narrow subjects. It is community & experiences.

I love doing extra curricular music at school. It brings me, and the students, so much joy. Today started with orchestra - loud, exciting and full. Then at lunch we had guitar club - 30 guitars playing silent night. Then after school it was time for O Holy Night with choir!

If you need to see change in your music department then start with your curriculum. Key stage 3 music is a crucial season. Getting that right will increase numbers at GCSE. 70% of music courses are NOT performing. Focus on the whole musician not just the performer.

School music making doesn’t need to be more than it needs to be. It just needs to be there & be something. Students love working towards a performance. Keeping it simple but effective is enough & increases pupil engagement. I told a trombonist this week - just play F over & over!
