Also notable that Cleveland teachers in LaFleur were not fired in so many words but were required to notify the local school board that they were pregnant and then resign—a situation that would be consistent with the records in Warren's case.

A famous Supreme Court case -- Cleveland Board of Education v. LaFleur (1974) -- struck down a school district's policy that forced teachers to take unpaid leaves if they were four months pregnant. The teachers in the case filed their lawsuits in 1971.

@sarahjeong @sdpowell1 True! Per Ellery Sedgwick's history of The Atlantic (pp. 109–110), the issue sold very well at first, but then "public curiosity was satiated and succeeded by righteous indignation. ... In 1870 circulation was down to 35,000, a loss of at least 15,000 from its peak in 1865."

@AlyssaRosenberg Respectfully, this is a straw-man argument. No one disagrees with your points—It's just very unlikely that they apply. Those preemptively objecting to the Harper's/Roiphe piece aren't attacking journalistic norms; they're worried that these norms are being violated.

Among its highlights are a memorable scene in which James Russell Lowell's hat, stuffed with manuscripts, blows into the Charles River, and another where an aggrieved former editor tells bitter jokes at a salon at his successor's expense.
