Hey leaders in sports, how are you ignoring your teams leaving in droves?
How are you daily worsening their mental health and invalidating their feelings?
How are you not forcing them to take the time off?
Some thoughts from someone who hears their pleas daily: 🧵 1/
@atrupar
The best part is they are so mad at certain people for disrespecting our flag yet this is a clear violation of the US flag code lol ¯\_(ツ)_/¯... but hey, what are rules in 2020 amirite?
Today is my last day unemployed. Monday starts a new chapter not only in my professional career, but in
@Pirates
content and creative. Buckle up, burn the ships, LFG. See ya in a few days Pittsburgh.
If you are a leader in sports and are more more worried about what people wear and when they get in the office, than the work they produce, you’re doing it all wrong. Not a subtweet. Just an observation from experience.
So. I’ve heard it four or five times the past few weeks as I’m looking for talent to fill some roles soon that “he/she/they are not baseball people”.
Well that’s perfect then.
I don’t wanna hire super-fans of a specific sport, I wanna hire super-fans of great storytelling.
So we have reached the point where we are pre-announcing that we are eventually announcing that we are leaving a job... and then teasing the new announcement about the next job. Got it.
Wanna know one of the best way to retain employees in sports?👇We had a strong bonus structure at the
@MiamiDolphins
based on profit as an org and performance as an individual. Life changing $. But I’ve also gotten $10 Starbucks card as a bonus. Bonuses matter and are achievable.
Twitter pharmacists: OMG 6 people got blood clots out of 7 million! Shut it down!
The same Twitter pharmacists in their Twitter doctor phase: 500,000 people died? Y’all it’s just the flu calm down and LIVE your life.
Do your job. Not everyone else’s.
If things suffer because they don’t do theirs, then let it suffer. A hard but necessary pill to swallow.
Leaders can’t effect change if everything looks great on the outside, but you’re taking on the brunt of the work to get it right.

Adam Toledo didn’t get his day in court. Duante Wright didn’t get his day in court. George Floyd didn’t get his day in court. Shall I continue?
So excited to announce that I’ll be joining
@WillPosthumus
and BIG Creative as the new Chief Creative Officer! A long time in the making but it’s time to change and grow the sports creative world once again!
I don't usually post about BIG Creative on here, but this one feels warranted. An announcement 15 years in the making and it feels like the winding roads we've been on as creative partners and individuals were always leading us here.
Let's do something BIG,
@jonwilley
!
When you're applying for a job, don't tell me how passionate you are about the team you are applying to...
tell me how motivated you are,
what interests TF out of you,
and SHOW me your abilities...
Those three together will immediately help me determine your level of passion.
Leaders, I’m not mad at ya but I’m worried about ur people. I get DAILY DMs from grads and people who’ve been in it for decades, that their MH is the worst it’s ever been. Show some fuckin grace n remember we are still in the middle of a global pandemic. I’m tired. Do better. 6/6
People (sports creatives) need to stop and ask themselves WHY this job they want so badly is a “dream job”... Seriously ask themselves why? Because it’s their favorite team? Their dads favorite team? Because they wanna be on the field? Riches and gold dabloons? IG clout? 1/5
If you’re a graphic designer taking credit for your teams success because you make recruiting graphics, you’re also setting yourself up to take responsibility when the success is absent.
Imagine the next wave of tattoo artists who grew up drawing in
@procreate
. And imagine your reaction when they tap two fingers at a time on your arm. ✌🏻😳

Every photographer who’s ever worked in sports and/or for a team knows how to find the angle and use the right long glass to make an empty stadium “look” full. Show us the 16mm shot with packed stadium. Good try Donnie.
Don’t ever ask them why they need a mental health day. If you’re “tracking” their hours and they are salaried in sports, they should be able to take a day off unquestioned. They work their asses off. 50 hr weeks maybe occasionally but 70-80-100 is abuse. 3/
The latest episode of
@TedLasso
broke me in the last second
You can be the best for everyone else your entire life, and forget who YOU really are. That shit isn’t sustainable
It’s OK to ask for help
It’s OK to break down during the biggest moments
It really is OK to not be OK
Been screaming this for years. We need to stop calling work “family” and call it what it is: A job is a community of like minded people coming together make awesome things!
A company isn't a family. Parents don't fire their kids for low performance or furlough them in hard times.
A better vision for a workplace is a community—a place where people bond around shared values, feel valued as human beings, and have a voice in decisions that affect them.
Think. Fucking. Different.
Challenge what you were taught (and what was forced on you).
It’s hard. I was the worst at it for 40 years. But the last 3 have changed my life.
Challenge dogmas and ask WHY a lot (especially to yourself). It’ll change you. Quickly.
One of the hardest parts about job hunting after a 20 year career in sports is getting people and recruiters for brands or agencies to understand you did so much more than just photograph football on Sundays
🚨 Life Update! 🚨
I am excited to announce that...
... i mulched around the entire house this weekend! (and only ingested a few pieces of the beautiful and not very tasty mulch)
That is all... for now.
😏
To every photographer who has asked me how to make it into the “pros”, remember when I said “shoot what you have access to and tell a story”? You don’t need to shoot in a big stadium with highly paid athletes to tell a story. THIS is how you do it.
Force them to take time off. They are adults and will make their own decisions, but it’s on you to help clear their schedules, get backups, and make sure the work gets done so they can take time off. Oh, and if you expect them to work in any way on vacation, your an asshole. 5/
Trust me, the work will get done eventually and no one will care if a tweet or graphic doesn’t go out. (And you may need to step in and help with workload, WITHOUT any guilt trip. Being a leader doesn’t exempt you from doing.) 4/
If there’s one thing I’ve learned the past 100 days back in sports, it’s that we are all very much dealing with the trauma of a global pandemic we are STILL IN.
Our collective mental health is not great.
At all.
Take it easy on yourself and others around you.
Love y’all.
Sometimes they just want you to listen and validate their feelings. It can be that simple. They want to know you hear them and are actively working on change, even if it will take a while. 2/
My 2nd year at the
@MiamiDolphins
I got this DM. He really wanted to be a Sommelier & was dabbling in photography. He sat next to me every home game holding my gear (learning) and shooting some partner signage for a year. Now Carlos is documenting legends every day. KEEP GOING!
And finally, we all know salaries can be brutal getting in the biz. It’s your job as a leader to make sure that if there’s too much work for one person, but you can’t give any bumps at the moment, you need to do your best to lessen the workload. Try saying NO for once. 5/
Wanna come work here? I’m hiring 5 roles on our team. Your office will be just outside left field ;)

Vets: ok, here are our thoughts on cheering on the sidelines since someone asked
Also Photo twitter:
Surround yourself with those that make you happy.
Those that truly care for you.
The rest is just noise to distract you and intrude on your happiness.
You get to decide who you devote your time to. No one else.
Choose wisely friends.

Just two. Any two. Copy, not retweet
We joke about 🔥 emojis and 🐐 call outs but it’s becoming a real problem in the industry and it’s re-wiring our feedback/rewards systems in a bad way. Step back and think about YOUR why. No one else’s.
A job is three things—do you keep learning? Do you like the people you work with? Are you recognized for what you do? If you have the three, stay.
If you have two, stay but prepare the next move. If you have one or zero, no work is worth your mental health: leave.

Wtf is actually happening in sports and society? We let teams draft rapists, we build “safety plans” to keep men accused of assault away from women, but omg u smoked weed, ur out! I just don’t understand how this keeps happening… we keep enabling this bullshit bc “sports”.
