I don't think anyone else will have noticed, so I'm dropping by to wish myself a happy 30th anniversary. What a Carve Up!, published by Viking Books on 28 April, 1994.

I once had to apply at very short notice for a visa that would allow me to transit through Russia and thought that was the most stressful and Kafkaesque bureaucratic experience I’d ever have, but I just had to pay for 20 minutes’ parking with RingGo and that was worse.

Keir Starmer will only be the seventh Labour Prime Minister in history. The Tories have had five since 2015.

Just give me five or ten minutes to become an expert on French politics and then I'll start posting again.

Fulham Rd cinema closing after 94 years. Strangely unbearable. Let’s all sit at home and watch « content » on « streaming ». While scrolling. Miserable face emoji.

A kind French friend just sent me this page from the current Télérama, in which the preview article for a TV screening of Billy Wilder's The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes is entirely devoted to my obsession with the film. Would never happen in the Radio Times. Vive la France!

Come on, then. Who will be the first member of the Reform-leaning commentariat - maybe even F*r*ge himself - to tell us yet again how this sort of thing is nothing more than the hardworking, silent majority expressing their legitimate concerns. We're waiting.

Liverpool's Spellow Lane library torched last night. What could be more 'patriotic' than destroying a centre which serves the local community?

So, farewell then, Fulham Road Picturehouse, which closes its doors on July 11. It survived as a cinema from 1930-2024 which I suppose is a good run. Don't know what it will become but if, like so many Tory MPs, I was a betting man, my money would be on 'luxury apartments.'

Happy 50th birthday to one of the strangest, most personal, most beautiful British albums ever made - Rock Bottom by Robert Wyatt, released OTD in 1974.

Chilling report from @maitlis . The GOP has become a full-on reality-denying cult, and two of our own recent Prime Ministers seem to be fully on board with it.

"The conversations in this hall are 𝙙𝙮𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙥𝙞𝙖𝙣. I think the people spouting this garbage are starting to believe it." @maitlis reports from the Republican National Convention where the likes of Russell Brand, Liz Truss and Rudy Giuliani have gathered. 🇺🇸

My new novel begins at a conference held by a similar group, which I’ve cunningly named TrueCon. It’s pretty broad satire, but nothing like as broad as Rees-Mogg appearing under the banner of ‘popular conservatism’ in the week he lost his seat. You really couldn’t make it up.

The PopCon group, which includes some of the most unpopular politicians in the UK, some of whom lost seats that had been held by their party for decades, will be meeting this morning to discuss the rise of 'Popular Conservatism'

More than 20 (yes, you read that correctly) of Birmingham's libraries are threatened with possible closure. Proud to be part of the campaign to fight for them. Follow the brilliant @BrumLibraryZine for more details.

I remember Paul Bailey saying that the genius of Carry On Cleo was to take all the poetry of Shakespeare's Anthony & Cleopatra and distil it into five seconds of Sid James watching Amanda Barrie getting out of the bath and going 'Phwoar ...'

If she'd been French she'd have been in Godard films, being British she did Carrie on Cleo and played Alma in Corrie, who is to say that's worse

From Sheldon Hall's ARMCHAIR CINEMA. In 1968 British Lion leased a package of 136 films to the BBC. It included a number of high profile movies but the most highly rated title was the 1961 comedy WHAT A CARVE UP, screened on 28 January 1969 to 7.3 million homes!

Beautiful little documentary made by the late, great Michel Ciment. Someone should really write a novel about the relationship between these two.

I just watched a 1982 documentary on YouTube about Billy Wilder called, "Portrait of a '60% Perfect Man'." I grabbed this screen shot of Wilder (with fly swatter) at work with his writing collaborator, the great I.A.L. Diamond. To me, this image is everything.
