DT Johnny Newton underwent surgery in January to repair a partial Jones fracture in his foot. Played the second half of the 2023 season with the injury.
The projected 1st rounder won't work out at the Combine, but should be cleared for an April pro day.
So, I'm pretty sure Terrence Shannon Jr. wears a Johnny Newton jersey to football games. Newton is wearing a Shannon jersey courtside at the basketball game.
This remains the best prediction text I’ve ever received. Ben (baseball writer for IlliniBoard) sent me this in July of 2020. The football account tweeted a video of the freshmen working out in the stadium. Johnny Newton beat everyone (WR’s, DB’s) up the stairs. And Ben said…
Here he recognizes, I think even before the snap, where Nebraska is running the ball (it’s not too big a stretch, the Huskers avoided him like the plague)
He makes sure he gets his eyes on the ball, scrapes over top to make the tackle
Jer’Zhan Newton DI | Illinois
6’2” 295lbs
Newton is the type of player you need in the interior of your defensive line.
Above average 40yd Dash with a 4.95.
Powerful arms that shed blockers with ease.
Great strength and footwork to fill holes in the run game. Need him!
Good reminder about NFL draft season reading the Jer'zhan Newton “get off slow”, “first step sluggish”, etc etc — when he’s often mirror stepping in that system soooo…
When someone tries to say “I don’t know - is Johnny Newton *really* an All American? At Illinois?”, just show them this image. 1st half Minnesota offensive stats with Newton sitting after the “targeting” call last game, 2nd half with Newton on the field.
