How do you explain your game to someone? Whether a friend, member of the press or just.. anyone?
While working on
@HeavensVault
and showing it to people, this approach has slowly evolved and emerged. Here's my PITCH PYRAMID!

Announcing: the next inkle game:
🏔️🎶A HIGHLAND SONG 🎶🏔️
Teenager Moira McKinnon is running away to reach the sea. But the Highlands are wild and cruel. Can she find a way across the hills?
⭐️WISHLIST NOW:
Coming to PC & Switch.
🔄Please RT!
And so ends the year in which we finally brought A Highland Song into the world.
It’s been a deeply personal project for me and has been a long time coming so feels like the end of an era. Can’t wait to open a new chapter at inkle!
🥂 🏴 Happy Hogmanay! 🏴 🥂
Just built a major new feature for ink that lets you have multiple simultaneous “flows” running in parallel simultaneously. Eg two conversations running simultaneously in the same story.
Guess we should do a new release soon! (And a release of Inky, it’s been a while!)
The reaction to
@AHighlandSong
at WASD has been fantastic. You never know *for sure* how good your game is while developing it (not seeing wood for trees etc) but the indications seem good! Phew. We’d better get on and finish it now then.
Text layout geekery tweetery!
I just made a new line break system that I'm really happy with... it's something I've been pondering for years now, but never taken the time to implement.
Explanation follows!
TOMORROW IS RELEASE DAY FOR
@AHighlandSong
!
🕔 5pm GMT / 9am PST / noon EST 🕔
Review embargoes lift early tomorrow, so keep your eyes peeled and your fingers crossed for us!
This has been a long time coming! Super excited and I barely slept last night but WE HAVE A RELEASE DATE!
Super proud to have been featured in an

The rhythm action gameplay in
@AHighlandSong
is super fun to author, so I wanted to write a quick thread showing our process.
Featuring the music of the incredible

Yeah this statement messed with my brain - it doesn’t sound accurate to me.
When I first started using Unity it took me a while to get used to the idea of “you put your little scripts into the 3d engine/editor” rather than “you start with a codebase and load some resources”
Finally, our next unannounced game is pretty personal to me, being set in the Scottish highlands where I spent much of my childhood.
We’re working with
@abigbat
on art direction, he and
@anastasia_wyatt
have already been producing some beautiful concepts behind the scenes!
Love seeing this:
@jmechner
going through exactly the same emotional rollercoaster of doubts as any game dev on the way to creating Prince of Persia
Excited to say that I helped
@failbettergames
prototype some little juicy details of the way the dialogue is presented in Mask of the Rose, and it’s lovely to see them coming through in the gifs on their Steam page!
GO WISHLIST IT!
Marvellous romance with a hint of murder: you can now wishlist Mask of the Rose on Steam!
Seek love, for yourself or your friends. Help a murdered man find justice. And watch out for the bats.

The news is in: Veronica Villensey has earned her life insurance payout (within 8 hours)... and Overboard! has earned back its costs (within 3 days).
Thank you to everyone who helped both of us.
Marvellous!
I might grumble when I have to make yet more new assets, but it can be satisfying to see them all lined up when done! (These are the capsules for the new Steam Library feature.)
Nostalgia pang alert!
When we sent out early press copies of 80 Days before its first release, it was the first time we were able to see via our "multiplayer" feature that everyone made different choices. These were all real people making real decisions about which way to go...
Loving how this world is built. We use a kit of "splats" - chunks of textures with transparency in layers. It gives it a lovely painterly feel as seen in
@abigbat
's key art.
Spring cleaning, and found an old notebook with some early
@HeavensVault
scribbles! More archaeology game archaeology.

Top things I’m most excited about with
@HeavensVault
... thread!
1. Translation mechanic: we call it the “Guitar Hero” of linguistics. It really feels like you’re translating a language, you go through the same steps in your head (which I find astounding). But... somewhat easier!
After five years of hard thought, iteration and community development, we're proud to announce that ink has now reached version 1.0!

HAPPY MOO YEAR!!
We'd like to wish you all a wonderful 2024 filled with memorable adventures exploring Scotland on foot.

My approach to UI design is probably not at all what
@sketch
intended, but it works for me!
I copy and paste artboards, and go off in different directions 🧭 as I branch into different ideas 💡
Great for tracking back to how far I've come since my first piece of crap design 😉
Game history nerds: a friend just mentioned a rumor that Starcraft was originally meant to be a Warhammer 40k computer game. I have doubts. But I'm sure I've heard of other famous titles that were IP switched as they were completed. What's the best story you know?
Quite proud of this! Haven’t done painting in ages, and haven’t really ever done much digital painting ever.
Little map/biome concept for our

Updated my profile pic for the first time since 80 Days was released!
To help you remember who I am: I’m that 30-something-year-old white game dev guy with brown hair and a beard who enjoys fantasy and sci-fi TV shows.
I love that for years I had used the
@walkhighlands
website to plan walks in the highlands, and then during development of
@AHighlandSong
I used it loads for reference and inspiration.
Worth a follow! Just look at the gorgeous real highlands! 😍
When we finish a game, I like to do one full proper playthrough that’s mine. My own canonical playthrough. Not testing, just sitting back and playing.
I’m doing that right now with
@HeavensVault
on my own PS4 and... I’m really enjoying it. Eeek.
Occasionally getting butterflies when I think about what we’ll be showing of our highland project in a few days.
This has been an announcement of my announcement butterflies due an upcoming announcement.
This port was perhaps the most technically challenging thing I’ve ever accomplished.
Super happy to see some of the positive reactions we’ve seen for the Switch version. Heaven’s Vault has sailed home!
Turns out putting "We strongly encourage women, BAME and other minority background candidates to apply." in your job ad is like a secret weapon.
You get emails from like, the COOLEST MOST TALENTED PEOPLE EVER
Heaven’s Vault started as an interactive graphic novel.
We were going to take one step up the technical ambition ladder after 80 Days, and have like, PICTURES and stuff.
Then we made it 3D, so naturally the schedule got extended by 3 years.
Good news though, we’re done now!
We're absolutely thrilled to announce that...
🌿
@AHighlandSong
is being featured in the official selection for
@Tribeca
games 2023!!🌿
We've produced an exclusive new demo that will be shown in NYC from June 7th-18th. Come if you can make it!
Tonight is the
@igfnews
awards and we'll be crossing our fingers for the narrative category!
(... and
@steamgames
are running a sale to celebrate, because that's how things are celebrated on Steam.)
Just played the demo for
@HeavensVault
at
#Rezzed2019
and now I'm buzzing with excitement. Its a beautiful, atmospheric and fascinating game which captures the complexity of archaeological interpretation whilst still being accessible
#Archaeogaming
Conversations in
@HeavensVault
are super responsive to the context of specific playthrough, but I sometimes felt like they took movement control away from you too often.
With
@AHighlandSong
we're working hard to keep the player in control to keep the game feeling really fluid.
New blog post on the making of

by our narrative director

This one is about a powerful new technique we're using in ink - Autocut!

Finally it feels like I can see light at the end of the tunnel on this project!
It’s been an epic dev schedule, partly because we’ve been doing 4(?!) other projects simultaneously, COVID distractions, me being part time due to family commitments. Excited to be in final straight!
Exciting news!
@AHighlandSong
is now filled with an initial version of all its levels, thanks to
@its_natclayton
fantastic work this year. It won't be long before you can take Moira on her journey across the beautiful Scottish Highlands 🧗♀️
Just playing
@HeavensVault
on my iPhone with an MFi controller...!
* using SteamLink
** and crappy WiFi
(But hey, it works, and is playable! Wouldn't recommend without an MFi controller though.)
Also, ICYMI: I’m giving a talk at
#GDC18
on how to make games with text that your players actually want to bloody read:
Part of that is about having good tools, hence opening sourcing SLayout!
