The Assyrian Church of the East today opened its new Patriarchate in Erbil. It's a move decades in the making. The patriarchal seat left Iraq in 1933, but always with an eye on returning. Construction of a new facility in Erbil was announced in 2006.

This is Baghdeda, an Assyrian district in northern Iraq about 20 miles SE of Mosul. ISIS invaded here in 2014, forcing many of the area’s 50k residents to flee. The district was liberated by @NinevehPU and the Iraqi army’s 9th Brigade in Oct. 2016 as part of the Battle of Mosul.

New Assyrian ruins have reportedly been found in Mosul at the Al-Masqi Gate, one of the grand gates that guarded the ancient Assyrian city in Nineveh. The gate was bulldozed by ISIS in 2016. An Iraqi-US team began excavating the area last year.

This is Dylan, an Assyrian from Europe. Dylan's family fled Iraq in the 90s. On an April walk in the Sapna valley, Dylan recognized a building based on a picture he had at home. He asked the neighbors and discovered it was his grandparents home and also where his mother was born.

The Jerwan Aqueducts were built by Assyrian King Sennacherib around 700BC and are located in the modern day Nineveh Province. They consisted of over two million of these stones. Some believe the Hanging Gardens of Babylon were actually Sennacherib’s gardens in Nineveh.

That's why articles and studies that rely on population figures from churches get it wrong, because they don't understand this dynamic of ethnicity versus religious affiliation. It leads to dividing a group that is larger in number and more united than reporting indicates.

This week marks the 8th anniversary of Christian homes in #Mosul being marked by ن ("Nazarenes") by the Islamic State, a signal that these homes must convert to Islam, pay a fine or face “death by the sword.” Many ultimately fled the city. Few so far have returned.
