I just learned that
@mbeisen
deleted his Twitter/X account because there was a backlash to him reposting an Onion article. This is shocking. Mike Eisen is an inspiring leader in the scientific community and a great blogger. I've followed his work for >15 years.
A large fraction of faculty act as editors and peer reviewers for journals. Setting the precedent that their public personal views or comments somehow represent the journal is in my view a very bad move. It will effectively open up a new avenue to silence academics’ speech.

I tried to see the piece he reposted but his account was already deleted. Please share what you know - I'm just learning about this situation. I know Mike personally and like him a lot and that's why I'm shocked.

While reading the Memorandum, I noticed these images of the patches the jail guards assigned to RA wore on their uniforms. In addition to the separation of church and state issues, in what universe is it acceptable for ANY public employees to wear "I Hate People"?!

I realize that this NY Times article on the origin of the Covid pandemic is highly controversial and I do not have strong opinions one way or the other. What I would like to see is a point-by-point response to each of Dr. Chan's claims without ad hominem attacks or vitriol.
@nytimes
I never imagined publishing in

@nytopinion
, not to mention receiving such overwhelming response.
I want to thank the editors & team who worked day+night to vastly improve the piece, create compelling graphics & organize fact checks by experts.
Submitted a $2.3 million grant application on Thursday. What a relief to have it in! Waking up (multiple times) at 2 am and going to work because you can't sleep ain't fun. But I did enjoy working with colleagues on the grant. They were all stellar and pulled their weight.
Multiple Elife editors have resigned in protest after
@mbeisen
was replaced as Editor-in-Chief. I realize that this is an extremely painful time that calls for sensitivity, and I weep with all who have lost loved ones. Still, I believe Elife's response sets a dangerous precedent.
The

The idea of humiliating people at weddings seems to be a western concept. I never saw it in the Middle East, where a wedding is a time of joy for everyone.

The lowest form of clickbait: when you read the article, it says "seventh-graders and adults." In other words, people of all ages.
The article should have focused on the candidate who skipped the debate.

It's impossible to have a discussion about this unless we define "immunity". Are we referring to sterilizing immunity (prevention of forward transmission) or a reduction in the severity of the next infection?

In Canada, candidates for Prime Minister engage in both an English debate and a French debate. In the US, there should be a Spanish debate in addition to the English debates.

How are they expressing their bleakness on Instagram? Are they showing images of despair? I have friends who've expressed their pain on social media, but it's rarely on Instagram. The platform elevates fluff over genuine communication.
@skoularidou
I try to speak sensitively but I will take this warning to heart. We also need to train people not to listen to a "rattle" - someone "from whose mouth information, true and false, flows out all day long without consideration, almost with volution". (C.S. Lewis, Surprised by Joy)
Lived on the 3rd floor of this building in Heliopolis, Egypt, from the age of 7 to 16. Here's a picture with my sister and son from a visit last summer.

What I find remarkable is that the defense attorneys are not just claiming RA is innocent- they're saying exactly who they believe committed the crimes and why. Isn't that unusual? Most of the time, the defense just tries to sow "reasonable doubt".
Interesting that many people have letters their grandparents wrote 50 years ago but have lost the emails they wrote 10 years ago. Technology will make things harder for biographers.
@CoffindafferFBI
She was in jail for over 50 years. The state could have kept her locked up a few more years (until her death), with taxpayers footing the bill, but even that wouldn't be justice for such heinous crimes.
Many mothers are mosaics. During pregnancy, fetal cells pass through the placenta and can become part of the mother's body, persisting for decades. The health effects are unclear, but there's evidence that fetal stem cells can seek out injured maternal organs and repair them.
The tradition in the Middle East is that churches are open 24/7. Think of the churches in Northern Gaza where hundreds of people are sheltering. When it freezes here in the US, I worry a lot about the homeless people I know. It's crazy that this pastor was arraigned.
Chris Avell, pastor of Dad's Place in Bryan, Ohio, has been arraigned in court because he kept his church open 24/7 to provide warmth to the unhoused during this brutal cold snap.
Multiple unhoused people have died in the last week from the cold.
Our courageous postdoc research scientists deserve a strong first contract that expands housing access and meets their childcare needs. There is no research without the researchers.

Happy Egyptian Mother's Day! Mom was born in Haiti, lived there 14 years, immigrated to Canada, where she met a man with the same birthday (at McGill), then later immigrated to Egypt, the country she's called home for many decades. Lots of people envy me for being her son.
Iran has retaliated with a drone attack on Israel.
Every life is precious, and what the Middle East needs now is not more war, but a comprehensive ceasefire, and freedom, dignity and relief for the starving people in Gaza and Sudan.
@CoffindafferFBI
Re. RA's confessions- don't care if he confessed 100 times in jail. Most people - especially honest ones - can be made to confess to crimes they didn't commit (read up on the Reid technique), even if they're not being held in horrendous conditions and guarded by members of a cult
“I’ll go with the science” is so bizarre here — I informally ask scientists about their beliefs on this, and I’d say it’s much closer to 50/50 than a majority consensus. It’s still very uncertain, and the belief distribution reflects that.
There's no shortage of unraveled scientific mysteries. The purpose of sleep is one of them.
It was previously hypothesized that sleep might play a role in brain clearance of toxins. Only one problem:
There was a strong movement by geneticists to put Barbara McClintock on the $10 bill. She's certainly the female scientist I'm most indebted to personally.

Living in New Orleans, I find the idea of a mass shooting in the vicinity of a parade (on Valentine's Day and Ash Wednesday, no less) particularly reprehensible. Love to our fellow-humans in Kansas City.

Do you really doubt for one minute that foreign intelligence agencies can access all the private data on US-based social media sites like Facebook? The solution is a comprehensive privacy bill, not banning Tiktok, which is a war on the young.
Very painful news today re. a close family friend in Cairo, Julia, who was hit by a car while crossing the street and is now intensive care. She is an amazing woman who has done a lot to help people with disabilities. We are hoping she makes it through the night.

It's very sad how this played out. I understand that many people are in severe pain and are angry, but why should

Don't assume that they're spamming and don't put them down. They're mostly international students who may come from a research culture that's very different from ours.

The focus now needs to be on ending this horrific war ASAP. Close to ten thousand children in Gaza have been killed, and groups like Doctors Without Borders, who are no stranger to conflict zones, say that this is the worst they've ever seen.

It seems to me that the defense presented a mountain of evidence and what I'd want to see from the prosecution (if I were the judge) is a point-by-point rebuttal.

Happy Egyptian Mother's Day to the most loyal and affirming mother ever! The commemoration of the first day of spring as a celebration of motherhood was promoted by the late Egyptian journalist Mustafa Amin.
When you hear about the US banning one of the world's most popular social media platforms, you ask yourself, "What?! I thought that only happened in authoritarian countries."

In the life sciences, the undergrads who work in your lab, and all grad students, typically use your first name; other students use your title
For me it was bioluminescence. I never saw anything as extreme as these pictures, but my biochemist father had been studying it so we took a small sample of sand while on vacation in Cabo and brought it back to our hotel room. When we got it in a completely dark room it glowed.
Whenever there's an alleged suicide that seems "too convenient", I ask myself, "What is the prior probability of this person committing suicide at this time vs. an alternative hypothesis e.g. the individual was targeted?" It's a difficult question.

What about French president Macron who married a woman 24 years older than him?
What's interesting is that trends are cyclical. This type of reasoning mirrors the heart balms of 100 years ago when men could be sued for "breach of promise to marry" and "seduction".
People in the west have no idea of the expenses and humiliation that their fellow-humans from the developing world incur when applying for visas. This academic was granted a visa but her 6-year-old daughter was denied one.
