Here's a piece I've done in tribute to Dragon Quest! Decided to participate in
#Animchallenge
's theme for this month as I got inspired by the Level Up prompt.

Thanks for watching! P.S. Can you spot the Metal Slime?
Hello! I'm Joel, an animator in games. I figured it's about time for a twitter account since I lurk around too much. Here are my compiled personal works in the year 2021; full version is in my vimeo channel over here:
Cheers!
In anticipation of the release of Overwatch 2, I animated live on Twitch for the first time! This is a highlight intro in homage to the game; done in the span of 4 hours.
Character rig is provided by the fantastic

Thank you for releasing your work for use!
Streamed for 3 hours and here is the polished version of the highlight intro of
@OtyMark
's character! You can watch the past broadcast of my process on my channel. Cheers!

Unused initial animation test. Some of you guys wanted to know more about the process of this shot; it took about 3 weeks of production inclusive of animation/rigging, planning and getting references!
This year marks my third year in the industry, and I am fortunate to have worked with many good people. I will continue hustling at my desk and show more exciting shots in future!

Here's something I've been working on in my spare time! Going for that Apex Legends' selection style. This year has been too kind to me (much work) so it was hard to find time for personal projects.
Gonna work on completing this shot as soon as I can ;)
Attempting to create a set of 3 character intros featuring fan favourites from films or games. It will be my first try at fan animation!
Here is a (rough) sneak peek of the first, can you guess who it is? (pretty obvious actually)
@SonnyBurge
Hey Sonny! For this shot I wanted to highlight the sword choreography. I visualize the dynamics and rhythm in my head for a good amount of time. Afterwards i roughly stitch up references found online to make up the beats of the shot. Hope it helps!
It’s been 15 months since I made the team liquid Valorant intro. Shortly after rival teams created their own 3D projects which were outstanding. But I wanted to go further. No longer is this about only gameplay it’s about telling stories too.
Some additional details and thought processes on my reel:
1. I pride on having interesting and different characters when it comes to a showreel, and at the same time have them look as if they are from the same universe (for aesthetic consistency)
@FramesByBlake
I'd say it's not mandatory, but highly recommended. As a junior chances are it might probably take a year or more depending on the studio to actually have decent shots for your new reel. Set a goal by the end of the year to have 3 or 4 personal work and it'll accumulate to heaps!
4. I hope to create more exciting shots (not limited to game cycles) as I expand my vocabulary further on
Thank you for reading if you have gone through the pointers! I hope this serves as a reminder to myself as well as a helpful post to some.
@michaelCuevas27
I use auto scripts like Advanced Skeleton to rig, they're fairly easy to use. It trained me to not rely on the internet for already-made rigs!
2. Not all models are found rigged, so I picked up rigging to help develop (future) characters to animate in my own terms. I've spent a ton of time to source for unique characters. As an audience I would like to see a variety of characters
3. In the process, I have loads of unused rigs or scrapped ideas (some in polishing stage). But those could be posted as individual shots or as practice; do find a way to repurpose them!
@Chester_Sampson
Hey Chester! Yes, I use Advanced Skeleton mostly. The bone placements are priority; try referencing the rigs you love and see their joint placements! I go back and forth to refine the rig as I animate. I usually go for the bipedGame set-up type. Hope it helps!
Just for curiosity, which do you prefer to see in a game-centric reel?
The poll is limited to 4 options, but feel free to list down others as well! (e.g viewmodel animations, recalls, intros)
