Some personal news: Today is my first day as an associate editor at the Miami Herald. I’ll be splitting time between editing/coaching reporters and writing enterprise stories and projects. It’s a new hybrid role in our newsroom, and I’m excited for the opportunity.
In Doral, several dozen folks gathered across Trump National Doral to protest police brutality & the president. Song playing is Joe Arroyo’s “Rebelion,” which is about an African slave in Cartagena, Colombia, defending his wife after their owner hit her.
About 25 officers hopped the barricade and slammed two people to the wall with their shields. One was running away. One was a photographer working for the Herald. Another woman sitting on the ground was arrested. This small number of people was declared an “unlawful assembly.”
NEW: Miami elected officials have called for the postponement of Ultra Music Festival. A meeting between city administrators and festival organizers is set to begin within the hour to discuss the city's request.

was scheduled to speak on a panel about public safety in Overtown this evening. His staff was present for about an hour before event started. As it began, his spokesperson, Soledad Cedro, told the audience he was not coming due to “personal reasons.”

In Coconut Grove’s Village West neighborhood, Miami’s oldest Black neighborhood, Vanya Allen led a crowd of demonstrators in a prayer and poured out some Ciroc for God and for those killed by police brutality.
Updated: A source with knowledge of the inquiry told the Miami Herald that the mayor’s spokesman, who resigned Tuesday, is being investigated on allegations of transmitting pornography to a minor.

This is on NW 11th St. in Overtown, where people experiencing homelessness had put up tents during the pandemic, many of which were distributed by coalition of community groups who were testing & feeding people on street. This goes against CDC guidance of breaking up encampments.
BREAKING: Houseless people in Downtown Miami being evicted RIGHT NOW by Miami Police. A sign was put up last night that says "Tresspassing is a crime," and now people who have lived here for years have been given 30 minutes to leave. Disgusting to do this during a pandemic!
The event is being held about 24 hours after the Miami Herald published an article about how corporate records indicate a real estate developer pushed the mayor for help with permits while the developer was paying the mayor to be a consultant.

Another woman I did not see was also arrested. The photographer was allowed to step away after police realized he was with the media. This happened because Miami-Dade police decided these folks, who had moved to the sidewalk, were unlawfully assembled.
Miami City Commission, which is meeting via online video conference tonight, has voted unanimously to implement a 10 p.m.-5 a.m. citywide curfew, beginning Friday night. Exceptions include ppl going to/from work, seeking medical services, & walking their dogs w/in 250 ft of home

In the lawsuit where the city of Miami tried to invalidate Miguel Angel Gabela’s candidacy for the District 1 seat, the 3rd District Court of Appeal had already ruled in Gabela’s favor Nov. 7. Now, the DCA just denied the city’s requests for a rehearing, another win for Gabela.
