I turn 27 in one week.
26 was my first year to make 6 figures.
Here are my random thoughts & pieces of advice on crafting a career you love within your 9-5.
What most people won’t tell you:
1. Talking negatively about your previous company.
You liked your manager.
You liked your company.
You liked the office.
You liked the role.
Why are you leaving?
Progression.
Simple.
1. Speak about the role & the challenges the business faces.
For example:
“From my understanding of this role it will involve [X].
The main challenges of this org are [1-2 challenges]”.
At the end of an interview when they say “do you have any questions for me?”.
And you say ‘no’, you’ve just failed.
Most interviewers say they remember the questions you ask more than the answers you give.
These are the BEST questions you can ask 👇🏾
No one is coming to save you in your career.
People don’t just slip and fall into high paying careers that they love.
If you don’t make a plan for where your career is going to go, life will make those decisions for you.
And you might not be happy with the results.
“I’m from a non-traditional background/I’m guessing my background is slightly different from your usual set of candidates.
What about my CV made you confident I would be a good fit?”
🔥
Get them to reinforce your fit for the role.
2. Speak about your past achievements that have results those specific challenges.
“At my previous company I [evidence of you solving challenges with metric]...
I learnt a lot of [specific skillset]
I am confident I can do the same within [org name]”
This thread is gold.
You have less than 24 hours until a job interview.
Let’s stretch it to an HOUR until your interview.
This thread is your cheat sheet to get you sounding like you’ve prepared for months 👇🏾
BONUS POINT:
This applies to other questions too:
Ask them a question back.
Interviews are a 2 way conversation.
In this example you might ask:
“Would you agree on the challenges I mentioned?”
Or
“Does this align with what would make a good fit?”
10. “I know I don’t have much experience but...”
No - you’ve been called for interview.
You do have enough experience.
Don’t qualify yourself out or introduce any doubt.
If you doubt yourself, so will others.
Instead say this 👇🏾
1. Speak about the role & the challenges the business faces.
For example:
“From my understanding of this role it will involve [X].
The main challenges of this org are [1-2 challenges]”.
6. “I don’t know how to do that”
“I have no idea”
Stop and think, use what you do have.
“I haven’t done that exactly as you described however in my current role I...” and expand on something similar.
3. “My weakness is I’m a perfectionist”
If you are not one - don’t say this.
Even if I was one, I don’t think I would say it (overused).
Instead - tell the truth (not a weakness material to the role) and follow up with how you have adapted your working style to compensate
If you currently have 0 experience, have just graduated or 0 experience because you are starting from scratch.

“At my previous company I [evidence of you solving challenges with metric]...
I learnt a lot of [specific skillset]
I am confident I can do the same within [org name]”
4. “I’m ready to start on Monday”.
Signals that you don’t have any value in your current company.
Also gives you no wiggle room for a start date.
They expect you to have a notice period, don’t let the excitement consume you.
5. Telling them your current salary.
Sharing your salary at this stage completely caps your earning potential.
Avoid.
Side note: your current salary is reflective of your old role not the new one, so shouldn’t be mentioned at any stage if possible.
7. Don’t ask anything you can find out easily online.
You need to use the research you’ve done to ask strategic questions.
“From my research I know X - tell me more about X in your own words”
This is the only CV/Resume thread you’ll ever need.
If you’ve got the words hardworking, goal-oriented or team player on your CV.
Remove them now.

9. “I’m really nervous”.
Whenever you feel the urge to say this switch it with.
“I’m really excited about this opportunity”.
Nerves are completely natural - check this thread for more advice on that.
Do you freeze up in interviews?

Can be crippling and ultimately cost you the job.

1. Having a 9-5 and switching jobs every 2-3 years can make you more money than a lot of entrepreneurs.
Spend time upskilling and go for a high paying industry.
Negotiate each time you move and this *will* change your life.

8. “[X] person recommended me in”
I love a referral and I harp on about them consistently.
They’re good for getting your foot in the door.
Thereafter you need to use your own merit to prove you’re worth it.
Plus the hiring manager will know you’re a referral already.
2) Your manager will make or break your experience.
Having a manager that will mentor, coach, give you enough responsibility, allow you to make mistakes is invaluable.
Don’t focus on a company name, focus on the person you’re working under.
Men are 4x as likely to ask for higher pay than women with the same qualifications.
Negotiating salary is no longer a ‘maybe’.
You HAVE to make negotiating your salary a priority in EVERY single job move.

Question for your next job interview:
If we were to fast forward 6 months from now, what are 3 things you need to see from me, in order for you to say “we made the right choice hiring [your name]?”
Forget ‘telling’ in your job interviews, start ‘showing’.
Telling:
I’m a hardworking and dedicated job search strategist.
= she thinks she’s good.
Showing:
I’ve helped 100+ jobseekers into careers they love in the last 6 months.
= she must be good.
This is for women especially.
You don’t need to fit 100% of the job criteria to apply.
Focus on the performance objectives.
Can you do those?
Hit apply.
6) Entrepreneurship is difficult.
A lot of entrepreneurs are burnt out.
A lot of entrepreneurs fail.
And here’s a big one = a lot of entrepreneurs are lonely.
Having a 9-5 with all of the below things and solid pay = gold in this generation.
The type of work and environment you should be targeting:
Supportive
High trust environment
Meaningful work
Work connected to your values
Work you are naturally skilled at
Work that you care about
Work-life balance
Work where you are challenged daily
Anything I’ve missed?
9) there are two job markets.
One where you’re chasing companies, the other where companies are chasing you.
Do the work.
Get the experience.
Get some clarity.
Become an expert.
And never leave that second job market.
I used to be that person that was grateful to just be employed.
But gratitude doesn’t pay bills.

8) Do the work.
Half of the progress, lessons & advancement you’re looking for
Is in the work you’re avoiding.
You will stand out from the majority of people if you simply do all of the things you say you will.
Stop going to people that are miles ahead of you for advice.
They’re going to give you generic “work really hard and focus” style tips.
It’s the person 1-2 steps ahead of where you want to be who is going to change the game for you.
You need a roadmap, not platitudes.
One of the best interview questions you can ask:
“If we were to fast-forward to one year from now, what 3 things would you need to see from me - in order for you to feel like you made a star hire?”
The problem with your job search is that you say:
❌Here’s my background.
❌ Here’s what I want.
❌ This is what I’ve done.
Transform that to:
✅ This is what I can do for you.
✅ Here is how I can solve your problems.
✅ This is how I can transform your organisation.
Are you still saying ‘I have no questions for you’ at the end of your interviews?
You’re missing a massive opportunity to close the deal.

• an indicator of future success.
